"The book was originally inspired by Harry Truman who said, "Give me a one handed economist! All my economists say on the one hand... on the other." It is my contention that ideology can only operate to limit choice. By mitigating choices, growth stimulating accords are sometimes overlooked or simply ignored. As an empiricist, I advocate that no ideology is right or wrong, but that conditions and data are all that should drive our policy-making decisions. Every policy has a place where it will or will not work, a set of circumstances that make it function or malfunction, and conditions that promote or deny the benefits associated with that policy. My view on economic policy making and world poverty is unique to the literature, since it is precisely opposite to Harry Truman's desire. The world is complex; Harry Truman needed a Three Handed Economist, one hand was never enough. The world has many sectarian problems; luckily the United States has largely avoided such problems. However, the growing wealth gap, political divide, increasingly emboldened extremist groups, and the decline of compromise is certainly harming the nation's future outlook. Since much disagreement comes down to misinformation and misunderstanding, this book seeks to educate and inform to dissuade misunderstanding and misinformation within the United States. In the rest of the world, poor people are driven to make decisions they may not make if their lives were improved. Extreme poverty is a blight on humanity and the discussion is far too limited. This paper is about freedom of choice and rigidity of choice rules as incentive devices. We study the optimal design of an agent's freedom of choice when his information is endogenous and costly to acquire. We show that curtailing the agent's authority over decision-making may be optimal even if the agent's and the principal's ex post objectives coincide. The agent is forced to depart from prior optimal choices and to take a clear stance on a matter. Having the agent choose from extreme options is derived as a second best optimal contract.

Nothing affects the modern economy (and society) more than decisions made in the market place, especially, but not only, decisions made by consumers. Although it is not startling to suggest that decisions made in production are affected by choices consumers make, consumers have long been viewed, not only by academic economists, as individual, isolated rational actors that make or refrain from purchases purely on the basis of narrow financial considerations. Markets are not and never were morally neutral. Market relations have always had an often taken-for-granted moral underpinning. The moralization of the markets refers to the dissolution and replacement of the conventional moral underpinnings of market conduct, for example, in the music market, financial markets, and corporate governance. It further implies not only the heightened importance of new ethical precepts, but the significant change in the role of moral ideals in market behavior. These profound transformations of economic conduct are accompanied and co-determined by societal conflicts. The moralization of markets represents thus a new stage in the social evolution of markets. The book is divided into four parts, in which the twelve chapters, written by contributors from different social science disciplines, deal with the context of the moralization of the markets; the major social institutions; and present case studies that examine European and American attitudes and behavior towards tobacco and GMO; expansion of the private and ethics in business; and how workers respond to the new corporate norms.
