Excerpt from The Making of a Socialist: Le Document Humain As the story of a working man, who by force of circumstances was forced from the bench, to give his time to reading and study, and thus to see things a little more intelligently than many of the workers have opportunity to do, I want this sketch of my life to be considered. I have ventured to have this story published for several reasons one is, that several who read it in the New York Call have written to me suggest ing such a course; another is, that while we have built up a good scientific literature of Socialism here in America, yet we are short of books of lighter vein, biography, fiction, poetry mere literature with us is scant, soi feel there is a place for such a book; again I don't know why the story is not well enuf told to be put into a book; but the reason above all others is, that my faith in the Cause is such, that I would rather myname be permanently connected with it than with anything else. The Making of My Socialism I consider the most important thing in my life; for the Cause, I have thrown away any chances I may have had of professional success; I have sacrificed many things that once loomed big for me, and thus I want to put on record my affiliation with the International Socialist Movement. This book traces the prepresidential career of the Socialist French president, covering his early years, his participation in the Vichy government, the Resistance and the governments of the Fourth Republic, and his 23 year march to the pinnacle of national power as leader of the French opposition during the first decades of the Fifth Republic. It is the story of a politician who built a solid majority starting from scratch in adopted political territory, a chaotic world of utopists, anarchists, purists, ideologues, and disciplined militants—in short, the French left. Baumann-Reynolds discusses the whats—Mitterrand's socialism, his republicanism, his Machiavellianism—and the hows—how he reacted to unpredictable events, how he took over the Socialist Party, and how he recuperated the communist vote. This is the first English-language biography by an American sensitive to the gaps in U.S. readers' knowledge of French politics.

The University Socialist Club And The Contest For Malaya written by Edgar Liao and has been published by Amsterdam University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012 with History categories.

"The book, using a small group of left-wing student activists as a prism, explores the complex politics that underpinned the making of nation-states in Singapore and Malaysia after World War Two. While most works have viewed the period in terms of political contestation groups, the book demonstrates how it is better understood as involving a shared modernist project framed by British-planned decolonization. This pursuit of nationalist modernity was characterized by an optimism to replace the colonial system with a new state and mobilize the people into a new relationship with the state, according them new responsibilities as well as new rights. This book, based on student writings, official documents and oral history interviews, brings to life various modernist strands - liberal-democratic, ethnic-communal, and Fabian and Marxist socialist - seeking to determine the form of post-colonial Malaya. It uncovers a hitherto little-seen world where the meanings of loud slogans were fluid, vague and deeply contested. This world also comprised as much convergence between the groups as conflict, including collaboration between the Socialist Club and other political and student groups which were once its rivals, while its main ally eventually became its nemesis"--Publisher's description.

The Capitalist Transformation Of State Socialism written by David Lane and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-11-20 with Social Science categories.

David Lane outlines succinctly yet comprehensively the development and transformation of state socialism. While focussing on Russia and the countries of Eastern Europe, he also engages in a discussion of the Chinese path. In response to the changing social structure and external demands, he outlines different scenarios of reform. He contends that European state socialism did not collapse but was consciously dismantled. He brings out the West’s decisive support of the reform process and Gorbachev’s significant role in tipping the balance of political forces in favour of an emergent ascendant class. In the post-socialist period, he details developments in the economy and politics. He distinguishes different political and economic trajectories of countries of the former USSR, the New Member States of the European Union, and China; and he notes the attempts to promote further change through ‘coloured’ revolutions. The book provides a detailed account not only of the unequal impact of transformation on social inequality which has given rise to a privileged business and political class, but also how far the changes have fulfilled the promise of democracy promotion, wealth creation and human development. Finally, in the context of globalisation, the author considers possible future political and economic developments for Russia and China. Throughout the author, a leading expert in the field, brings to bear his deep knowledge of socialist countries, draws on his research on the former Soviet Union, and visits to nearly all the former state socialist countries, including China.

"The last decade has seen the women's movement gain strength among all classes of society. At the same time, the left has too often floundered, as fragmented groups of party liberals and leftists struggle against a growing right-wing trend. There's an important reason for all of this, say the authors. It lies in the very different structure of the women's movement as compared to that of most socialist organizations. This book shows what the left must learn if it is to become an effective force for grassroots change."--

Social Democracy In The Making written by Gary Dorrien and has been published by Yale University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-04-23 with Christian socialism categories.

An expansive and ambitious intellectual history of democratic socialism from one of the world's leading intellectual historians and social ethicists The fallout from twenty years of neoliberal economic globalism has sparked a surge of interest in the old idea of democratic socialism--a democracy in which the people control the economy and government, no group dominates any other, and every citizen is free, equal, and included. With a focus on the intertwined legacies of Christian socialism and Social Democratic politics in Britain and Germany, this book traces the story of democratic socialism from its birth in the nineteenth century through the mid-1960s. Examining the tenets on which the movement was founded and how it adapted to different cultural, religious, and economic contexts from its beginnings through the social and political traumas of the twentieth century, Gary Dorrien reminds us that Christian socialism paved the way for all liberation theologies that make the struggles of oppressed peoples the subject of redemption. He argues for a decentralized economic democracy and anti-imperial internationalism.
