Excerpt from The Making of Hawaii: A Study in Social Evolution These studies were begun more than a decade ago, but it is thought that the recent incorporation of Hawan among the territories of the United States may give to their publication at the present time a pertinence which it otherwise would not have had. I have to acknowledge my indebtedness to Mr. C. N. Chapin, librarian of the American Board of Com missioners for Foreign Missions, for the loan of several important volumes, some of them rare and otherwise inaccessible to me; to the Honorable S. Bar - Dole, Professor W. D. Alexander, the Honorable L. A. Thurston, and Judge W. F. Frear, of Honolulu, for information and advice; to two friends now dead Dr. And Mrs. Wesley Newcomb, of Ithaca, New York - for reminiscences, letters, and documents re lating to the early days; to Mr. Thomas G. Thrum, whose admirable series of Hawaiian Annuals, giving for five and twenty years a contemporaneous record of island affairs, have made my work possible; to Mr. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Reworking Race written by Moon-Kie Jung and has been published by Columbia University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010-02-26 with Social Science categories.

In the middle decades of the twentieth century, Hawai'i changed rapidly from a conservative oligarchy firmly controlled by a Euro-American elite to arguably the most progressive part of the United States. Spearheading the shift were tens of thousands of sugar, pineapple, and dock workers who challenged their powerful employers by joining the left-led International Longshoremen and Warehousemen's Union. In this theoretically innovative study, Moon-Kie Jung explains how Filipinos, Japanese, Portuguese, and others overcame entrenched racial divisions and successfully mobilized a mass working-class movement. He overturns the unquestioned assumption that this interracial effort traded racial politics for class politics. Instead, the movement "reworked race" by incorporating and rearticulating racial meanings and practices into a new ideology of class. Through its groundbreaking historical analysis, Reworking Race radically rethinks interracial politics in theory and practice.

An Unlikely Revolutionary written by Matsuo Takabuki and has been published by University of Hawaii Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1998-05-01 with Political Science categories.

A confidant of Governor John Burns, a member of the Board of Supervisors of the City and County of Honolulu, a business associate of developer and financier Chinn Ho, a trustee of the Bishop Estate - Matsuo Takabuki has been at the heart of many of the sweeping social, financial, and political changes that have fundamentally altered Hawaii in the last half century. An Unlikely Revolutionary is Takabuki's own story, told in his characteristically straightforward manner, of his life and work as one of the "movers and shakers" behind Hawaii's transformation from an isolated, agriculture-based territory to a highly diverse, competitive modern community. In September, An Unlikely Revolutionary was featured on the front page of the Honolulu Star-Bulletin.

The Hawaii Movie and Television Book documents, with production information and critical commentary, the Hollywood films and television shows made in Hawaii since 1995 to the present while spotlighting significant film achievements of the past. It also covers television and the iconic fictional island crime fighters. In addition, the book includes an Island film location guide to sites accessible to the general public and a history of the present-day Hawaii film industry. Hawaii played a role in the formative years of Hollywood. It shares a legacy that began a hundred years ago with the consolidating of the U.S. film industry on the West Coast at the beginning of the twentieth century spanning the first feature films made in 1913 through its territorial status, World War II, statehood and now into the current twenty-first century. Since 1995, more than fifty major Hollywood theatrical feature films were made in the Hawaiian Islands, many of them blockbuster productions, with at lea
