The Making of the New Testament Documents investigates literary tradition and their implications for the authorship, origin and dating of the New Testament Gospels and letters. Building upon earlier research, it identifies and compares preformed pieces that, in the letters, call into question the traditional view that the letters were the sole product of an individual whose authorship could be vetted by internal criteria of vocabulary, style and theological expression. The numerous and diverse epistolary traditions, many non-authorial, argue for a kind of corporate authorship, that until now has been unappreciated and apparently unknown to critical scholarship. A comparison of the traditions, and of the common opposition they sometimes have in view, supports a synchronic relationship of the various New Testament documents, all of which with the exception of John's Gospel and letters reflect the pre-AD 70 period. It thus challenges the tradition of F.C. Baur, still widely followed, that apart from a few Pauline letters, dates New Testament writings from the last decades of the first century to the first half of the second. The author contends that the New Testament is the product of four contemporaneous and cooperating apostolic missions, each of which produced a Gospel and a number of letters and each of which faced the same judaizing-gnosticizing countermission. These four allied missions shared both Gospel and epistolary traditions even as they pursued their discrete tasks in the service of the church. The arguments of this book, if persuasive, will require a reassessment of the history of early Christianity. This publication has also been published in paperback, please click here for details.

The Text Of The New Testament written by J. Harold Greenlee and has been published by Baker Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2008-06-01 with Religion categories.
The Text of the New Testament is a brief introduction for the lay person into the process whereby the New Testament came to be. It describes the basics of ancient writing tools, manuscripts, the work of scribes, and how to think about differences in what the various manuscripts say. This is a revised and expanded edition with a completely new chapter on how contemporary English translations fit in with our understanding of the New Testament text. Geared to the lay person who is uninformed or confused about textual criticism, Greenlee begins this volume by explaining the production of ancient manuscripts. He then traces the history of the development of the New Testament text. Readers are next introduced to the basic principles of textual criticism, the concept of variant readings, and how to determine which variant has the greatest likelihood of being the original reading. To illustrate the basic principles, several sample New Testament texts are examined. The book concludes by putting textual criticism in perspective as involving only a minute portion of the entire New Testament text, the bulk of which is indisputably attested by the manuscripts.

“Important both historically and theologically. Readers will not be able to see the New Testament in the same way again.” —Marcus Borg, author of The Heart of Christianity “A New New Testament does what some of us never dreamed possible: it opens the treasure chest of early Christian writings, restoring a carefully select few of them to their rightful place in the broad conversation about who Jesus was, what he did and taught, and what all of that has to do with us now.” —Barbara Brown Taylor, author of Leaving Church and An Altar in the World There are twenty-seven books in the traditional New Testament, but the earliest Christian communities were far more vibrant than that small number might lead you to think. In fact, many more scriptures were written and just as important as the New Testament in shaping early-Christian communities and beliefs. Over the past century, many of those texts that were lost have been found and translated, yet are still not known to much of the public; they are discussed mainly by scholars or within a context of the now outdated notion of gnostic gospels. In A New New Testament Hal Taussig is changing that. With the help of nineteen important spiritual leaders, he has added ten of the recently discovered texts to the traditional New Testament, leading many churches and spiritual seekers to use this new New Testament for their spiritual and intellectual growth. “Remarkable . . . Not meant to replace the traditional New Testament, this fascinating work will be, Taussig hopes, the first of several new New Testaments.” —Booklist

What are the churchgoers, the Bible college students, and seminary students to do when one Bible scholar says one thing and another Bible scholar says something quite different, or worse still, several Bible scholars are giving you several different opinions on one particular Bible issue? What makes it even more unsettling is when the Christian is not well informed in that area of study, only having basic knowledge. How can the Christian possibly know which of the Bible scholars are correct? Worse still, the Christian is put in the embarrassing position on social media of telling an atheist or Bible critic one of the scholar’s views, and then the atheist or Bible critic responds to the Christian with, ‘no your evidence is outdated, as recent research points to __________,’ and then they offer another answer that put the Bible in a bad light. What is the Christian to do? What will be accomplished here in this publication is we are going to give the reader much evidence when it comes to the documents of the New Testament, how that evidence impacts our Bible translations and an in-depth look at Bible difficulties as well. This can be used to build your faith, to save someone who may have begun to doubt the trustworthiness of the Bible, and many reading responses that can be used on social media and other forms of your ministry. Andrews is an author of more than 140 books, many of which are a defense of God’s Word.
