In the annals of scientific history, the name Robert Hooke often goes unrecognized, overshadowed by the towering figures of his contemporaries. Yet, Hooke was a brilliant and versatile scientist whose contributions to science were as profound as they were diverse. This book unveils the remarkable life and work of Robert Hooke, shedding light on his groundbreaking discoveries and his lasting impact on the scientific landscape. Hooke's journey of discovery began in the realm of microscopy. Armed with his self-designed microscope, he embarked on an exploration of the hidden world of microorganisms, revealing a vast and previously unseen universe teeming with life. His meticulous observations and detailed drawings laid the foundation for the field of microbiology and provided crucial evidence against the prevailing theory of spontaneous generation. Beyond his microscopic explorations, Hooke turned his attention to the heavens, making groundbreaking observations of the solar system. His detailed drawings of the planets and their moons, as well as his observations of comets and nebulae, contributed significantly to our understanding of the cosmos. Hooke also made important advances in the field of physics, including his discovery of the law of elasticity and his contributions to the understanding of light and color. Hooke was not only a brilliant scientist but also a tireless advocate for the scientific method. He emphasized the importance of experimentation, observation, and rigorous analysis, setting the stage for the modern scientific approach. His insistence on empirical evidence and his commitment to open inquiry helped to shape the foundations of modern science. Despite his remarkable achievements, Hooke's reputation was often overshadowed by that of his contemporaries, particularly Isaac Newton. This book seeks to rectify this historical oversight by providing a comprehensive and engaging account of Hooke's life and work. It delves into his groundbreaking discoveries, his tireless advocacy for the scientific method, and his enduring legacy as one of the most influential scientists of the 17th century. Through a captivating narrative and meticulous research, this book brings Hooke's extraordinary contributions to life, revealing the true extent of his genius and his lasting impact on the scientific landscape. It is a fitting tribute to a man whose insatiable curiosity and relentless pursuit of knowledge helped to shape our understanding of the natural world. When one has a purpose in life, he shall find the means to achieve it and will not lose time to dream. It requires determination. God is the only who knows the destiny of each individual, and we are very grateful to Him for creating me with a black skin, and having filled me with His Spirit of truth and judgement to avoid doubt and fear, which are the basis of all the troubles. This Spirit has lived throughout our research and training in general. That life has no draft. Our research was painful because it is comparable to the pilgrimage of Jews on their way to the Promised Land. The rains that fell on me are similar to the deluge. Without realising it, the distance I travelled across countries in search of knowledge before writing this book can be compared to a world tour on foot. Writing a book is always the work of many hands and minds besides that of the authors. This book is dedicated to the Lord God, the Almighty source of all life. Special thanks to my lovely wife and children for their amazing contributions to make part of the hidden worlds visible to everyone. Thanks to the brothers and sisters in the Lord for their prayers, to friends, and to the extended family, near and far, for their valuable contributions to make the hidden worlds possible. Special thanks to Hannah Cordle, Ray Russell, Miles Cole, Sam Pochen, Wanza Maya, and Dr Milwood PhD., who have given me valuable suggestions throughout my book. In particular, thanks to the Kongolese diaspora interviewed and authors for their copyrights. To my uncles, it is time for me to say a big thank you. To my parents, with regret, Marie Pady and Simon Ngangoma, who sowed joy but are not alive to reap the harvest. May their souls rest in eternal peace! Vibrant tribute to all Kongolese heroes who died and continue to die for the nation: in memory of so many years we shared together in Kongo, we love and miss them deeply and will carry their spirit with us until the time we meet again.

Britain’s shallow seas are a mysterious domain. They remain largely unseen and unexplored except by marine scientists and divers, who have been documenting their wondrous discoveries over many years. Now, a wealth of information about what lives on and in the seabed has been brought together in one sumptuously illustrated volume. Keith Hiscock describes the incredible variety of marine life that exists around Great Britain, providing a foundation of knowledge for those interested in the natural history of the shallow seabed. He explains how findings are gathered and organised, as well as showing what is out there and how it works. Fascinating, beautiful and often fragile, the habitats and marine life described are essential to the health and productivity of our oceans. Without an adequate, shared understanding of what and where they are, how can we identify and protect them? Exploring Britain’s Hidden World is the culmination of 50 years of research by the author to better understand where different subtidal seabed habitats occur and how their associated marine life has come to exist. That quest draws on a rich vein of knowledge obtained by many naturalists, scientists and divers who, for almost 200 years, have described seabed communities and sought to understand their structure and function. Using a minimum of technical terminology, Keith Hiscock combines his interests in marine biology, diving and photography to inform, inspire, and leave a vivid and lasting impression of the marine habitats and species around Britain. He hopes this book will provide new insights, much pleasure, and perhaps some surprises too.
