In Mountain Mandalas Allan G. Grapard provides a thought-provoking history of one aspect of the Japanese Shugendo tradition in Kyushu, by focusing on three cultic systems: Mount Hiko, Usa-Hachiman, and the Kunisaki Peninsula. Grapard draws from a rich range of theorists from the disciplines of geography, history, anthropology, sociology, and humanistic geography and situates the historical terrain of his research within a much larger context. This book includes detailed analyses of the geography of sacred sites, translations from many original texts, and discussions on rituals and social practices. Grapard studies Mount Hiko and the Kunisaki Peninsula, which was very influential in Japanese cultural and religious history throughout the ages. We are introduced to important information on archaic social structures and their religious traditions; the development of the cult to the deity Hachiman; a history of the interactions between Buddhism and local cults in Japan; a history of the Shugendo tradition of mountain religious ascetics, and much more. Mountain Mandalas sheds light on important aspects of Japan's religion and culture, and will be of interest to all scholars of Shinto and Japanese religion. Extensive translations of source material can be found on the book's webpage.

In a similar genre expressed by Anne Morrow Lindbergh in her book "Gift From the Sea" the messages of seashells inspire Annie Horkan on a journey around the mandala of life. Specific shells prompt her to both listen and reflect on the wisdom heard into which she weaves her own voice and truth defined by a depth of spirit and passionate heart. The author engages us into a circle dance, in which to celebrate our innate wild and sacred connections to our innermost selves and to all life. Our sacred, wild souls reflect the vibrations of both our inner light and shadows with which to create a reality that either sustains or destroys life. If humanity is to collectively create a world in which we live in harmony with one another and Nature, we must individually find the beauty, wisdom, and truth within our own shell.

A taste for beauty and a love of adventure stories motivated us to work together on this book, somewhere between a travel guide, a picture album and a diary. 'The Rivers of the Mandala' tells of the discovery of Mount Kailas, Tibet’s sacred mountain, by two young travellers following in the footsteps of their forefathers - Sven Hedin, Giuseppe Tucci, Lama Govinda - all explorers of exotic lands and of the soul, travellers in body and in mind; but the death of Simon's brother Thomas in a car accident in Afghanistan would alter his perception of the mystical nature of the regions through which they had both travelled.

The Cult Of Pure Crystal Mountain written by Toni Huber and has been published by Oxford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1999-03-18 with Religion categories.

The Tibetan district of Tsari with its sacred snow-covered peak of Pure Crystal Mountain has long been a place of symbolic and ritual significance for Tibetan peoples. In this book, Toni Huber provides the first thorough study of a major Tibetan Buddhist pilgrimage center and cult mountain, and explores the esoteric and popular traditions of ritual there. The main focus is on the period of the 1940s and '50s, just prior to the 1959 Lhasa uprising and subsequent Tibetan diaspora into South Asia. Huber's work thus documents Tibetan life patterns and cultural traditions which have largely disappeared with the advent of Chinese colonial modernity in Tibet. In addition to the work's documentary content, Huber offers discussion and analysis of the construction and meaning of Tibetan cultural categories of space, place, and person, and the practice of ritual and organization of traditional society in relation to them.

Kniha uvažuje o japonských horách jako o místech náboženských úkonů. Autorka čtenáři nabízí pohled na historický i současný stav náboženských praktik, pričemž nezanedbává ekonomický aspekt jejich vývoje. První tři kapitoly, věnované historickému vývoji náboženských praktik v horské oblasti Tatejama, odhalují souvislost mezi horami a představami o posmrtném životě v Japonsku. Příklad poutnického místa Tatejama, populárního v období Edo, pomáhá představit si jakým způsobem fungovalo v tomto období poutnické místo a náboženský kult.

Bone Mountain written by Eliot Pattison and has been published by Random House this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011-07-31 with Fiction categories.

When disgraced former inspector, Shan Tao Yun joins a group of reverent Tibetans returning a sacred artefact to its home, it seems he has at last found the peace he has struggled for since leaving prison. What starts as a spiritual pilgrimage, however, quickly turns into a desperate flight through the Tibetan wilderness as the outlawed monk who guides them is murdered and Sham discovers that the artefact has recently been stolen from the Chinese army. But why is the army so desperate to find the artefact entrusted to Shan? Why is an aged medicine lama being stalked by government agents? Why has an American woman, a geologist for an oil company, abandoned the project and fled into the mountains? Shan discovers not answers, but only new mysteries as he is drawn to such unexpected places as the raucous headquarters base of the Western oil venture and a monastery that seems more attuned to the teachings of the party than those of Buddha. And the further he travels into the mountains, the more Shan realises that what is at stake is not only justice but the spiritual survival of those who have joined his strange quest. At the heart of Pattison's powerful tale is a story of a brave, oppressed people who have learned to endure by drawing strength from their land and their rich spiritual traditions.
