'beautifully written ... a perfect book' Rachel Sweasey One night, everything changed... Air raid sirens wail across London and nineteen-year-old Clare takes her chances in the streets rather than heading to the office basement – and risk being in the same vicinity as him, the man who hurt her in the worst way possible... ... and makes a decision that will haunt her for the rest of her life. Over a year later, and Clare is heartbroken to be saying goodbye to her newborn daughter Mirren. Leaving her in the care of her sister, in a remote – and therefore safe – house in The Highlands, she heads back south to become a map maker for Bomber Command. The work is tough, and Clare struggles with having a direct hand in killing ordinary people. Combined with the guilt for leaving her baby behind, her dark thoughts could destroy her... or make her stronger than ever. A heart-breaking tale of love, loss, and redemption, this is a moving and poignant story of motherhood and the complexities of healing in the aftermath of war. In 1400 Europe was behind large parts of the world in its understanding of the use of maps. For instance, the people gf China and of Japan were considerably more advanced in this respect. And yet, by 1600 the Europeans had come to use maps for a huge variety of tasks, and were far ahead of the rest of the world in their appreciation of the power and use of cartography. The Mapmakers' Quest seeks to understand this development - not only to tease out the strands of thoughtand practice which led to the use of maps, but also to assess the ways in which such use affected European societies and economies.Taking as a starting point the question of why there were so few maps in Europe in 1400 and so many by 1650, the book explores the reasons for this and its implications for European history. It examines, inter al, how mapping and military technology advanced in tandem, how modern states' territories were mapped and borders drawn up, the role of maps in shaping the urban environment, and cartography's links to the new sciences.

A New York Times Bestseller “Maps allow the armchair traveler to roam the world, the diplomat to argue his points, the ruler to administer his country, the warrior to plan his campaigns and the propagandist to boost his cause… rich and beautiful.” – Wall Street Journal Throughout history, maps have been fundamental in shaping our view of the world, and our place in it. But far from being purely scientific objects, maps of the world are unavoidably ideological and subjective, intimately bound up with the systems of power and authority of particular times and places. Mapmakers do not simply represent the world, they construct it out of the ideas of their age. In this scintillating book, Jerry Brotton examines the significance of 12 maps - from the almost mystical representations of ancient history to the satellite-derived imagery of today. He vividly recreates the environments and circumstances in which each of the maps was made, showing how each conveys a highly individual view of the world. Brotton shows how each of his maps both influenced and reflected contemporary events and how, by considering it in all its nuances and omissions, we can better understand the world that produced it. Although the way we map our surroundings is more precise than ever before, Brotton argues that maps today are no more definitive or objective than they have ever been. Readers of this beautifully illustrated and masterfully argued book will never look at a map in quite the same way again. “A fascinating and panoramic new history of the cartographer’s art.” – The Guardian “The intellectual background to these images is conveyed with beguiling erudition…. There is nothing more subversive than a map.” – The Spectator “A mesmerizing and beautifully illustrated book.” —The Telegraph

While teacher knowledge is well-researched and conceptualized, parent knowledge remains largely unstudied. In response, this book details Pushor’s conceptualization of parent knowledge, the unique knowledge that arises from the lived experiences of being a parent, knowledge that is relational, bodied and embodied, intuitive, intimate, and uncertain. Drawing from her narrative inquiry into parent knowledge, Pushor shares and unpacks the stories of one participant as a way to provide a close up view of the parent knowledge a First Nations father held and used in living with and educating his children. Twelve teachers and parents then put forward their individual and contextual experiences immersed in explorations and use of parent knowledge, attending to the questions, How can what parents know enhance schooling experiences for children? How can parent knowledge, used alongside teacher knowledge, inform decisions made in schools and enhance curricular programming and outcomes for children? Using the metaphor of maps ... of mapmaking ... of living as mapmakers, this book is a storied account of the new practices in which parents and teachers engaged to enable parent knowledge to guide their work with children. It is an honest and vulnerable account of their journeys. The authors puzzle over the complexities and the successes of their work and the resulting impact on children, parents, and teachers. This book is an invitation to educators and parents to consider how to walk alongside one another, using both teacher and parent knowledge, for the benefit of children’s learning and wellbeing.

Landscape as Territory is a cartographic book project that critically addresses the agency of architects in the so-called ‘Urban Age,’ understanding the notion of ‘territory’ as a field of design praxis through which Interconnected landscapes are produced. Territory, understood as a ‘political technology,’ has the capacity to involve architects and designers into complex social, political, technical, legal, strategic and economic processes that are both historical and geographical engines of contemporary urbanization. Islands in Northern Norway. Territorial praxis is interrogated in a collection of threaded theory and design contributions where essays pose key questions that are addressed through projective cartographies, unfolding arguments related to three sections: (1) territory, (2) critical cartographies and (3) agency.
