An invaluable guide for lovers of classical music designed to enhance their enjoyment of the core orchestral repertoire from 1700 to 1950 Robert Philip, scholar, broadcaster, and musician, has compiled an essential handbook for lovers of classical music, designed to enhance their listening experience to the full. Covering four hundred works by sixty-eight composers from Corelli to Shostakovich, this engaging companion explores and unpacks the most frequently performed works, including symphonies, concertos, overtures, suites, and ballet scores. It offers intriguing details about each piece while avoiding technical terminology that might frustrate the non-specialist reader. Philip identifies key features in each work, as well as subtleties and surprises that await the attentive listener, and he includes enough background and biographical information to illuminate the composer’s intentions. Organized alphabetically from Bach to Webern, this compendium will be indispensable for classical music enthusiasts, whether in the concert hall or enjoying recordings at home.

A new exploration of literary and artistic responses to WW1 from 1914 to the presentThis authoritative reference work examines literary and artistic responses to the wars upheavals across a wide range of media and genres, from poetry to pamphlets, sculpture to television documentary, and requiems to war reporting. Rather than looking at particular forms of artistic expression in isolation and focusing only on the war and inter-war period, the 26 essays collected in this volume approach artistic responses to the war from a wide variety of angles and, where appropriate, pursue their inquiry into the present day. In 6 sections, covering Literature, the Visual Arts, Music, Periodicals and Journalism, Film and Broadcasting, and Publishing and Material Culture, a wide range of original chapters from experts across literature and the arts examine what means and approaches were employed to respond to the shock of war as well as asking such key questions as how and why literary and artistic responses to the war have changed over time, and how far later works of art are responses not only to the war itself, but to earlier cultural production.Key FeaturesOffers new insights into the breadth and depth of artistic responses to WWIEstablishes links and parallels across a wide range of different media and genresEmphasises the development of responses in different fields from 1914 to the present

"Military drummers have played a crucial role in warfare throughout history. Soldiers marched to the sound of the drums and used the beat to regulate the loading and re-loading of their weapons during battle. Drummers were also used to raise morale and intimidate the enemy during the fight. This is the first work to chart the rise of drums in military use and how they came to be used on the battlefield as a means of signalling. In ancient China, Egypt and by the Mongol hordes of Genghis Khan the drum was used to manoeuvre troops in battle, with drummers deliberately targeted by opposing armies. The twelfth-century Crusaders helped re-introduce the drum to Europe, and during the numerous wars of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries the drum was to be heard resonating across the continent. The use of drums was to last for almost 4,000 years before modern warfare with radio communications rendered them obsolete, although drummers continued to serve in the armies of the world and performed many acts of heroism as they served as stretcher bearers rescuing the wounded from the battlefield. Today their role is purely ceremonial, but this book tells of the great tradition of drums and drummers throughout history and their role on the battlefield"--Publisher's description, back cover.
