Edward Fisher's "The Marrow of Modern Divinity" is written as a dialogue that draws upon the insights of Martin Luther, John Calvin, and other notable 16th and 17th century Protestants to distinguish the law from the gospel and to confront the errors of antinomianism and legalism. While these issues are of perennial relevance for Christ's church, the antiquity, intricacy, and format of Fisher's book can make it daunting for contemporary readers. In this simplified version, most of Fisher's material has been retained, the best insights from Thomas Boston's 18th century annotations have been incorporated directly into the dialogue, and the content has been revised and edited to make it more accessible for today's readers. This second, expanded edition contains an entirely new section (Part 4) that contains a simplified version of the material that Fisher published in 1649 as the second part of "The Marrow." Andy Wilson is the pastor of Grace Presbyterian Church (OPC) in Laconia, New Hampshire. His writings have appeared in Modern Reformation magazine, Ordained Servant journal, and online at the Aquila Report.

Assurance was a central issue for the eminent Scottish theologian-pastor Thomas Boston long before it emerged as a focal point of the theological debate in the Marrow Controversy. In The Marrow of Certainty, Chun Tse presents the first full-length study of Boston's theology of assurance in six dimensions: trinitarian, covenantal, Christological, soteriological, ecclesiastical, and sacramental. This work not only furnishes the first-ever intellectual biography of Boston in his Scottish context and controversies, but it also cross-studies the theology of the Marrow of Modern Divinity with Boston's notes. This research argues that Boston's doctrine of assurance centres on union and communion with Christ, the architectonic principle of his theology. The book challenges the common conception that Boston's theology merely follows Calvin, the Scots Confession, the Marrow, the Westminster Standards, and Scottish federalism. Boston, most strikingly, holds in tension assurance as intrinsic to faith—itself a gift from God's sovereignty in election—while insisting on self-examination as a human responsibility. This salient mark of his doctrine of assurance originates from his assertion that Christ died for the elect alone but all—elect or not—have the warrant to receive Christ. As such, assurance is, theologically, a divine gift and, pastorally, a human endeavour. Certainty is thus both extra nos and intra nos. Boston, this study reveals, has a potent and enduring power to speak on the perennial issue of assurance, rooted in the person of Christ, whom he considers as being the covenant itself.

In this study Pieter de Vries analyzes the order of salvation in John Bunyan's (1628-1688) theology and the repercussions from his prominent Puritan viewpoint. The order of salvation describes the various facets that emerge in the application of redemption and defines their mutual relationships. In The Pilgrim's Progress the order of salvation is vividly expressed by the use of metaphoric language. Similarities between Augustine's Confessions and Bunyan's autobiography Grace Abounding to the Chief of Sinners are also examined.

The Church of Scotland divine Samuel Rutherford (1600-61) was among the first theologians to say that Christ's saving work took place to fulfill an agreement between God and Christ that had been made in eternity. By placing Rutherford's major statements of this new doctrine in their various social, political, polemical, and pastoral contexts, this book provides a fresh explanation for the dramatic rise of the eternal covenant of redemption to become the cornerstone of Reformed federal theology and offers a case-study in the development of doctrine.

Tim J. R. Trumper draws on his decades of historical, biblical, and theological research into the doctrine of adoption to offer a unique reflection on the Sonship debate—one with lasting implications for the Reformed tradition. Much the buzz in confessional Presbyterian circles around the turn of the millennium, the debate concerned the discipleship course developed by practical theologian John C. (“Jack”) Miller (1928–1996) and his wife Rose Marie. Whereas some attested to God’s use of Sonship in their spiritual rejuvenation, others questioned its Reformed credentials. Setting the debate, in pioneering fashion, against the backdrop of the historical theology of adoption, Trumper offers an assessment that is enlightening, evenhanded, and constructive. His fresh portrayal of the history of the Reformed tradition teaches the value of pausing before rushing to judgment, and is a reminder that the meeting of spiritual needs requires more biblical exposition not less of it. While addressing the points of debate, When History Teaches Us Nothing is, above all, a call to the church to recover the doctrine of adoption, and to the Reformed community to revive her creative orthodoxy, to recapture Scripture’s balance of the juridical and familial aspects of the faith, and to do so with grace.
