Excerpt from The Martyrs and Confessors of St. Andrews The following sketches appeared during the last six months in the columns of the Fife Herald, the St Andrews citizen, and the Fife News. Although necessarily written in a somewhat popular manner, pains were taken to ascertain the facts, and to state them correctly and all have been carefully revised ere thrown 03 in this more permanent form. As ninety-dve years elapsed before Paul Craw was followed to the stake by another Martyr in Scotland, it seemed advisable to present a brief outline of that period, in the beginning of the chapter on Patrick Hamilton. Perhaps the ac count there given of Patrick Graham should have formed' the substance of a separate article. As Walter Myln suflered only thirty years after Hamilton, it was impossible to prevent over lapping; but needless repetition has lously shunned. Excerpt from The Historic Martyrs of the Primitive Church This book is not written for the learned world, but to introduce to the ordinary reader some of the most trustworthy of the records of the primitive martyrs and confessors. In accordance with this object, I have not judged it necessary or expedient to discuss questions which are of much interest to the historian, but which might be repellent to others, concerning the age and authenticity of some of the documents used, or with regard to the trustworthiness of the several narratives. It will, I hope, be enough to say, that no narrative has been inserted in this book which may not be considered historically true, though in some cases the portions here given have been disentangled from a good deal which is fictitious. This is particularly the case with the Roman martyrdoms, such as those of Caecilia and Sebastian; but it holds good also with regard to some of the Eastern martyrdoms, like that of Theodore the Tiro. It would probably be possible, by a similar process of sorting and sifting, to extract something like history out of a good many other Acts and Passions. Le Blant, amongst others, has shown how often material of real value is embedded in the midst of worthless and tiresome legend. But I do not think that the book as a whole would gain by the isertion of a large number of doubtful reconstructions.
