For his entire life, professor Aaron Skorsky has searched for the truth. Finding it near the heights of Masada, he learns that the account of a mass suicide by 1000 Hebrew rebels may have been falsely reported. After 2000 years, an ancient alchemy used by the Romans against the rebel zealots lays unclaimed. Finding it is only half the problem and soon Skorsky finds that he must choose between revealing a threat to mankind or saving the life of someone dear to him. Caught in the middle of an Israeli plot and desperate measures by Arab terrorists who want to expose them, Skorsky has little choice but to bend to the higher power.

The mighty epic of Masada tells of Jews who preferred liberty to life itself. Their story centers on the bleak fortress of Masada in the Judean Desert after the conquest of Jerusalem and the destruction of the Holy Temple by the Romans in 70 CE. Here, in a last stand, Pharisees, Sadducees, and Essenes laid aside the differences that had crippled their resistance to the Romans and united in their zeal for God and country. Their leader was Eleazar ben Ya'ir, one of the great freedom fighters of Jewish history. This story brings to vivid life people who might have taken part in this great episode of Jewish history. It tells of the bridal couple, Adin and Ohada, from distant Babylonia; the winsome Urzillah from Nabatea, child of the caravan trails of the East; and Justus from Alexandria in Egypt, with his faithful wife, Sara, a convert to Judaism. Survivors from Jerusalem may well have included boys such as Iddo, of the priestly tribe; his friend and rival Aviel; and little Yitzhak, orphaned by the Romans and protected by Hannah, his grandmother and only surviving relative. Faith and courage belonged to them all--as they held a mighty Roman army at bay for three years. Even in their extremity they practiced and treasured the rites of their religion--blessing the new moon, circumcising the newborn infant, bathing in the mikveh (the ritual bath), and reciting the daily prayers. When all hope was gone they resolved to die as free men, women, and children. In turning their swords against themselves they ultimately denied victory to the Romans and the general Flavius Silva, for their memory has prevailed over that of their oppressors.

In the great tradition of novels like The Robe by Lloyd C. Douglas and, more recently, Christ the Lord by Anne Rice and Stone Tables by Orson Scott Card, The Masada Scroll is bold and reverent, with deep and important meaning for today's world. At the heart of this timely novel is the discovery of a previously unknown gospel that predates the four gospels of the New Testament. The scroll introduces a mysterious symbol that combines the Star of David, the Cross of Christianity and the Crescent and Star of Islam. None of these symbols existed at the time the Gospel was written, adding to the mystery that Michael Flannery, an Irish priest, must unravel. Flannery discovers that the symbol represents the Trevia Dei, or Three Paths to God. At the heart of Jesus' message is the unity of the paths that lead to God. The true meaning of Trevia Dei has become perverted over the centuries, turning the message of unity into a single path to salvation. But there are those who do not want the message of this wonderful book of light and love brought to our troubled world, who have chosen to separate rather than unite God's children. The Masada Scroll is the story of the new Apostles who struggle to bring the simple message of Jesus back into a world desperate for joy. The Masada Scroll is a tale of the timeless quest for spiritual truth and redemption. It is a story that will change the way you look at the world...and your own heart. The dramatic history behind one of the great landmarks of ancient Israel. In the spring of 73 AD, the rock fortress of Masada on the western shore of the Dead Sea was the site of an event that was breathtaking in its courage and self-sacrifice. Here the last of the Jewish Zealots who, for nearly eight years, had waged war against the Roman occupiers of their country made their last stand. The Zealots on Masada had withstood a two-year siege but with Roman victory finally assured, they were faced by two options: capture or death. They chose the latter, and when the Roman legions forced their way into the hill fort the following morning they were met only with utter silence by row upon row of bodies. Rather than fall into enemy hands the 960 men, women, and children who had defended the fortress so heroically had committed suicide. The story of the siege and eventual capture of Masada is unique, not just in Israeli legend but in the history of the world. It is a story of bravery that even the Roman legionaries, well used to death and brutality, could see and appreciate. It was a massacre but a massacre with a difference: carried out by the victims themselves. This book tells the story, also covering the excavation of the remote hilltop site in the twentieth century.

The dramatic story of the last stand of a group of Jewish rebels who held out against the Roman Empire, as revealed by the archaeology of its famous site Two thousand years ago, 967 Jewish men, women, and children—the last holdouts of the revolt against Rome following the fall of Jerusalem and the destruction of the Second Temple—reportedly took their own lives rather than surrender to the Roman army. This dramatic event, which took place on top of Masada, a barren and windswept mountain overlooking the Dead Sea, spawned a powerful story of Jewish resistance that came to symbolize the embattled modern State of Israel. Incorporating the latest findings, Jodi Magness, an archaeologist who has excavated at Masada, explains what happened there—and what it has come to mean since. Featuring numerous illustrations, this is an engaging exploration of an ancient story that continues to grip the imagination today.

In the tradition of Dan Brown, expect a wild ride from start to finish, as John B. Macurdy’s The Masada Scroll mixes history, exotic locations, arcane religion, ancient texts, and plenty of modern action adventure. When former CIA assassin Nick Strahan undertakes a mission to help an old friend in trouble, archaeologist Dr. Jones, Strahan must evade danger or be assassinated himself. A shadow network of disparate and unlikely bedfellows helps him at each step along the way. Strahan can only guess at the explosive nature of Dr. Jones’ find, and will do everything he can to make sure his find comes to light. “Strahan still didn’t see any particular car that might be trailing him, but several other drivers had taken his passing them at a truly remarkable speed as a challenge. As a result, they had made the ludicrous decision to pick up the gauntlet and try to stay with him. This happenstance made for a truly comical scene playing itself out on the road behind Strahan as he watched the variety of unskilled drivers, who also lacked true performance automobiles, attempt to mirror his highly technical maneuvers. Equally humorous were the cornucopia of hand gestures that reflected the collective commuters’ opinion of the road-rage drivers attempting to mimic him. But he flew over the East River so quickly he barely noticed he’d been over water.”
