Throughout his gospel, the apostle only recorded eight major miracles performed by the Lord; each of those miracles was written so that John's readers might be convicted of the Messiahship of Jesus of Nazareth and in so doing, that they might come to him and find life (John 20:31). This book was written to tell the story of those eight signs. It was written to make the narrative of John's gospel come alive, and then to go deeper into the symbolic, or parabolic meaning of each one of those miracles. In every case, the symbols of the sign come together to powerfully demonstrate that the Lord Jesus came to bring true life--and that this true life can only be found in him.As you read through these pages, may you be reminded of that simple lesson. May the Master become more real to you, may his words become living truth, and just as the apostle desired, may you be helped to find life in the name of the Son of God.

THE readers of this Life of Blessed John of Avila may well be surprised that one who even in his lifetime was celebrated for no ordinary sanctity, both in his own country and beyond it, should not have been beatified before an interval of three centuries and a half from the time of his death. And this all the more, because, as a spiritual director and guide, he had led so many along the paths of the highest perfection, of whom several have been venerated on our altars long before he was; we refer to St. John of God, St. Francis Borgia, St. Peter Alcantara, St. Teresa of Jesus. It is but recently that he who, for his skill in guiding souls, was honoured with the title of “the Master,” has been promoted to only the initiatory step of beatification. One reason for this delay seems to be that in the case of a priest, who did not belong to any corporate body of the clergy, secular or regular, there have been none to undertake the important and laborious work of promoting his cause; the energies of those devoted to his memory, however learned and capable, being not sufficiently united to attain this end.
