Ukiyo-e (‘pictures of the floating world’) is a branch of Japanese art which originated during the period of prosperity in Edo (1615-1868). Characteristic of this period, the prints are the collective work of an artist, an engraver, and a printer. Created on account of their low cost thanks to the progression of the technique, they represent daily life, women, actors of kabuki theatre, or even sumo wrestlers. Landscape would also later establish itself as a favourite subject. Moronobu, the founder, Shunsho, Utamaro, Hokusai, and even Hiroshige are the most widely-celebrated artists of the movement. In 1868, Japan opened up to the West. The masterful technique, the delicacy of the works, and their graphic precision immediately seduced the West and influenced greats such as the Impressionists, Van Gogh, and Klimt. This is known as the period of ‘Japonisme’. Through a thematic analysis, Woldemar von Seidlitz and Dora Amsden implicitly underline the immense influence which this movement had on the entire artistic scene of the West. These magnificent prints represent the evolution of the feminine ideal, the place of the Gods, and the importance accorded to landscape, and are also an invaluable witness to a society now long gone.

Hokusai, a grand protagonist of ukiyo-e , his legacy and powerful influence on European art. Katsushika Hokusai (1760-1849), an unchallenged master of ukiyo-e , the Floating World, active between the late 1700s and the first-half of the 1800s, stands out on the art scene not only for his Great Wave and the series Thirty-six V iews of Mount Fuji of which the print is a part, but also his great versatility expressed in his treatment of all types of subjects: from landscapes to nature, kabuki actor portraits, beautiful women, warriors and even ghosts and spirits, semi-legendary beings and animals. Hokusai is also associated with many changes: of residence, of name (over thirty, even though the main ones are six), of style, with dozens of followers, each of which, in some way, represents one aspect in the Master's vast oeuvre. These include Shinsai, Hokkei and Gakutei who influenced the following generation of artists, together with another individual, who is not considered a direct student of Hokusai but who nonetheless determined in an interesting way the developments in prints of beauty and landscape from 1810 to 1830: Keisai Eisen. Through a selection of over 250 works from the Municipal Museum of Chiba and other Japanese collections, this publication offers a reading of Hokusai that also includes his legacy, accompanying and comparing his output with that by others who followed in his footsteps and gave life to new lines, forms and balances of colour within the classic themes of ukiyo-e and landscape, nature, beauty, actors, heroes and warriors.

Ukiyo-e: 139 reproductions, grouped by artist, each accompanied by a detailed commentary This volume reproduces 139 Japanese woodblock colour prints by 43 famous masters of ukiyo-e, the popular art of the 17th to the 19th century. The originals are in the Riccar Art Museum in Tokyo, the world's largest and most celebrated collection of such prints. On account of their rarity and value, 87 of them have been designated Japanese National Treasures or Major National Cultural Heritage Items. The introductory essay, "Ukiyo-e - Origins and History", by the Curator of the Riccar Art Museum, Mitsunobu Sato, familiarizes the reader with the history of this art form. This is followed by the chapter "Cherry - Wood - Blossom", in which Thomas Zacharias, Professor at the Munich Academy of Art examines the technique, content and style of Japanese prints and their influence on European art at the turn of the century. The major section of the book consists of the 139 reproductions, grouped by artist, each accompanied by a detailed, sensitive commentary. Street scenes, lovers' trysts, festivals, portraits of courtesans and actors, landscapes and travelogues - these are the motifs of the ukiyo-e print. The dominant theme, however, is woman's beauty, the grace of her posture and attitudes, and the decorative aesthetics of her flowing garments. Amongst the most celebrated of the artists featured here are Utamaro, with his beautiful courtesans and geishas; Sharaku, with his portraits of actors on the kabuki sta≥ Hokusai, with his landscapes, among them the "36 Views of Mount Fuji"; and Hiroshige, with his "53 Stations on the Tokaido" and his "100 Views of Famous Places in and around Edo". The ten-page appendix includes a glossary of technical terms and biographies of all 43 artists.

Excerpt from The Masters of Ukioye: A Complete Historical Description of Japanese Paintings and Color Prints of the Genre School IN arranging a chronological exhibition of works by the Masters of the Ukioye, or Popular School of Japanese Artists, Mr. Ketcham has rendered a service to students and lovers of Japanese Art for which they should be very grateful. That the exhibition has been undertaken partly for commercial reasons does not lessen the obligation. In addition to the selections made from Mr. Ketcham' s extensive stock, it includes also, through the kindness of their owners in loaning them for the occasion, a large proportion of the finest and most beautiful works belonging to private collections in the United States. Nothing like it has ever been attempted before. For the first time does a connected series of paintings and prints by all of the leading artists of this school, hung together in proper sequence, make it possible to gain a comprehensive view of the history of Ukioye art through all the phases of its rise, development, and decay. Especially is this true as regards the N119}: z'kzye, or color prints from wood blocks, which are the most distinctive product of the school. Here may be seen rare proof-impressions from early blocks, which are printed in solid black, with no atternpt at gradations of tone. The several varieties of hand-colored prints are represented by many fine examples. Then in the Nishikbte proper may be traced the growing mastery of the artists over the resources of the printer's craft. The works of the earlier men are notable for combined vigor of conception and sweetness of line, rather than for especial beauty of color. There is, however, a charm in their quiet simplicity which is lacking in the works of later periods; and some of the prints for which, in addition to the black outline, but two tint blocks were used, are exquisitely lovely in color, as well as wonderful achievements in design. After Torii Kiyomitsu began the use of a third color-block, the rivalry between many able artists resulted in rapid prog ress, until the art reached its highest development in strength and beauty of design, in richness and variety of color, and in perfection of printing, in the time of the great master Torii Kiyonaga and his contemporaries. The works shown in this exhibition make it possible to follow this development throughout, and to trace the subsequent decline of the art, at first gradual, then more rapid, as the creative impulse which stimulated the masters of the eighteenth century died out, and little was left beyond mere delight intechnical proficiency. The brief renaissance due to the genius of Hokusai and Hiroshige is illustrated by some superb examples of their finest produc tions. That few works of their contemporaries and followers are shown is not because the art became extinct after the death of these men, but for the reason that their aesthetic value is so small. The art of Japanese woodblock printing, known as ukiyo-e ("pictures of the floating world"), reflects the rich history and way of life in Japan hundreds of years ago. Ukiyo-e: The Art of the Japanese Print takes a thematic approach to this iconic Japanese art form, considering prints by subject matter: geisha and courtesans, kabuki actors, sumo wrestlers, erotica, nature, historical subjects and even images of foreigners in Japan. An artist himself, author Frederick Harris--a well-known American collector who lived in Japan for 50 years--pays special attention to the methods and materials employed in Japanese printmaking. The book traces the evolution of ukiyo-e from its origins in metropolitan Edo (Tokyo) art culture as black and white illustrations, to delicate two-color prints and multicolored designs. Advice to admirers on how to collect, care for, view and buy Japanese ukiyo-e woodblock prints rounds out this book of charming, carefully selected prints.
