In The Mathematics of the Breath and the Way, Charles Bukowski considers the art of writing, and the art of living as writer. Bringing together a variety of previously uncollected stories, columns, reviews, introductions, and interviews, this book finds him approaching the dynamics of his chosen profession with cynical aplomb, deflating pretensions and tearing down idols armed with only a typewriter and a bottle of beer. Beginning with the title piece - a serious manifesto disguised as off-handed remarks en route to the racetrack - The Mathematics of the Breath and the Way runs through numerous tales following the author's adventures at poetry readings, parties, film sets, and bars, and features an unprecedented gathering of Bukowski's singular literary criticism. The book closes with a handful of interviews in which he discusses his writing practices and his influences, making this a perfect guide to the man behind the myth and the disciplined artist behind the boozing brawler.

Everyone’s favorite Dirty Old Man returns with a new volume of uncollected work. Charles Bukowski (1920–1994), one of the most outrageous figures of twentieth-century American literature, was so prolific that many significant pieces never found their way into his books. Absence of the Hero contains much of his earliest fiction, unseen in decades, as well as a number of previously unpublished stories and essays. The classic Bukowskian obsessions are here: sex, booze, and gambling, along with trenchant analysis of what he calls "Playing and Being the Pet." Among the book's highlights are tales of his infamous public readings ("The Big Dope Reading," "I Just Write Poetry So I Can Go to Bed with Girls"); a review of his own first book; hilarious installments of his newspaper column, Notes of a Dirty Old Man, including meditations on neo-Nazis and driving in Los Angeles; and an uncharacteristic tale of getting lost in the Utah woods ("Bukowski Takes a Trip"). Yet the book also showcases the other Bukowski-an astute if offbeat literary critic. From his own "Manifesto" to his account of poetry in Los Angeles ("A Foreword to These Poets") to idiosyncratic evaluations of Allen Ginsberg, Robert Creeley, LeRoi Jones, and Louis Zukofsky, Absence of the Hero reveals the intellectual hidden beneath the gruff exterior. Our second volume of his uncollected prose, Absence of the Hero is a major addition to the Bukowski canon, essential for fans, yet suitable for new readers as an introduction to the wide range of his work. "He loads his head full of coal and diamonds shoot out of his finger tips. What a trick. The mole genius has left us with another digest. It's a full house--read 'em and weep."—Tom Waits "This second volume of Bukowski's uncollected stories and essays offers all that Bukowski is known for—wry obscenity, smutty wisdom, seeming ramblings whose hidden smarts catch you unaware--but in addition there are moments here in which he takes off the mask and strips away the bravado to show himself at his most vulnerable and human. A must for Bukowski aficionados."—Brian Evenson, author of Last Days and The Open Curtain "Like a brass-rail Existentialist or a skid-row Transcendentalist, [Bukowski] is candid, unblinking, leaving it to his readers to cast their own judgment about his mishaps, his drinking, his sexual appetite or his own pessimism. He is Ralph Waldo Emerson as a Dirty Old Man, not lounging in the grape-arbor of Concord, Massachusetts, but bent-over a table in an L.A. flophouse scribbling in pencil to the strains of Sibelius."—Paul Maher Jr., Phawker "[Bukowski] could be generous and mean-spirited, heroic and defensive, spot-on and slanted, but he became the world-class writer he had set out to be; he has joined the permanent anti-canon or shadow-canon whose denizens had shown him the way. Today the frequent allusions to him in both popular and mainstream culture tend more to respect than mockery. If scholarship has lagged, this book would indicate that this situation is changing."—Gerald Locklin, Resources for American Literary Study "The pieces range over nearly half a century, and include a story about a baseball player seized by a sudden bout of existential paralysis, along with early, graphically sexual (and masterfully comic) stories published in such smut mags as Candid Press."—Penthouse "An absolute must for fans of Charles Bukowski's work, Absence of a Hero is also a welcome addition to public and college library literary studies shelves."—Midwest Book Review

BETHANY MACDONALD HAS TRAINED SIX LONG YEARS FOR THIS MOMENT. SHE'LL TRY TO SOLVE FIVE QUESTIONS IN THREE HOURS, FOR ONE IMPROBABLE DREAM. THE DREAM OF REPRESENTING HER COUNTRY, AND BECOMING A MATH OLYMPIAN. As a small-town girl in Nova Scotia bullied for liking numbers more than boys, and lacking the encouragement of her unsupportive single mother who frowns at her daughter's unrealistic ambition, Bethany's road to the International Math Olympiad has been marked by numerous challenges. Through persistence, perseverance, and the support of innovative mentors who inspire her with a love of learning, Bethany confronts these challenges and develops the creativity and confidence to reach her potential. In training to become a world-champion "mathlete", Bethany discovers the heart of mathematics - a subject that's not about memorizing formulas, but rather about problem-solving and detecting patterns to uncover truth, as well as learning how to apply the deep and unexpected connections of mathematics to every aspect of her life, including athletics, spirituality, and environmental sustainability. As Bethany reflects on her long journey and envisions her exciting future, she realizes that she has shattered the misguided stereotype that only boys can excel in math, and discovers a sense of purpose that through mathematics, she can and she will make an extraordinary contribution to society.

Transfigural Mathematics written by Lere O. Shakunle and has been published by Outskirts Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010-06 with categories.

TRANSFIGURAL MATHEMATICS (TfM) is a new kind of mathematics which is representative of Nature and natural processes as a flowform of one in the other. Unlike classical mathematics which is fundamentally discrete and about models and modern mathematics which tries to flow but ends up being discrete among its members such that both end up representing purely theoretical setting, in transfigural mathematics everything flows. What results is the representation of the natural within the theoretical setting and the theoretical within the natural setting. The name, "Transfigural Mathematics" originated from 'transfigural' which originates from "Trans = across, over, beyond" and "figure= a shape, form, figure" from which we have "Transfigure = change the form of," to which is added "figural = consisting of or forming figures." From these follows that we have transfigural which is, "transfigural = trans figure figural" as the change of form across, through and beyond. TfM treats both numerical and logic forms and geometric 'figures' as open dynamic flow-forms permeated by space, not closed-off entities that either occupy or are confined by 'space'. Correspondingly, these figures cannot be abstracted from the spatial context that they both fold into and in from, and space is not a meaningless 'absence of presence' or 'emptiness', but instead a limitless, receptive presence of 'openness', full of creative potential. Both 'zero' and 'infinity' are natural qualities of this receptive space that can neither be cut up into nor assembled from discrete quantitative 'units', like the discontinuous 'sets' of 'one' or 'many' in conventional mathematical formulations. These qualities are vital to the dynamic point as a flow that becomes the line and the line that folds to become the point without beginning nor end. What results is the point as line and the line as point constituting a flow of one in the other which is a flowform. In this flowing, folding and forming, a thing is itself and the context of its story. This context is the environment, the home, the habitat which is Nature. Things as relative infinities in Transfigural Mathematics means that one is in the other of all and there is none that is greater or less than the other but each is unique and distinct as local in the nonlocality that is in all and everywhere. Transfigural Mathematics is a thought, that is transfigural thought, a philosophy which is transfigurality, a way of life that is one in the other and a mathematics, physics, biology, indeed the sciences, social and natural, including literature and the arts, spirituality. Indeed TfM is a way of life of one as a flow in the other and of worlds within worlds in which one is equal to the other but different yet the same. All of this and more that cannot be said here but are to be found in the works on Transfigural Mathematics are brought together succintly in what Transfigural Mathematics is which is what we have below: Transfigural Mathematics is the study of change in permanence and permanence in change of figure across, among and in between, on the inside, within and beyond. This is the study of the permanence in change and change in permanence of figure in inter, intra, omni and transspatial realms - where, ultimately it is the space that is permanent and the figure that transfigures as a configuration of space.

In 2010, French mathematician Cédric Villani received the Fields Medal, the most coveted prize in mathematics, in recognition of a proof which he devised with his close collaborator Clément Mouhot to explain one of the most surprising theories in classical physics. Birth of a Theorem is Villani's own account of the years leading up to the award. It invites readers inside the mind of a great mathematician as he wrestles with the most important work of his career. But you don't have to understand nonlinear Landau damping to love Birth of a Theorem. It doesn't simplify or overexplain; rather, it invites readers into collaboration. Villani's diaries, emails, and musings enmesh you in the process of discovery. You join him in unproductive lulls and late-night breakthroughs. You're privy to the dining-hall conversations at the world's greatest research institutions. Villani shares his favorite songs, his love of manga, and the imaginative stories he tells his children. In mathematics, as in any creative work, it is the thinker's whole life that propels discovery—and with Birth of a Theorem, Cédric Villani welcomes you into his.
