The older movement in the "eighties" had only a few spokesmen and writers; now one can scarcely take up a local newspaper without finding evidence of capable exponents. Socialism, it is scarcely too much to say, has given men souls, has created minds; never was there a movement so independent of its leaders, so sure to produce men at its need. Excerpt from Appeal Socialist Classics The pamphlets in this series are composed, in the main, of selections from the published work of Socialist writers, mostly of the present day. In some of them, particularly "Socialist Documents" and "Socialism and Government," the writings used are mainly of collective, rather than individual authorship; while the Historical Sketch is the composition of the editor. To the selections given, the editor has added explanatory and connecting paragraphs, welding the fragments into a coherent whole. The aim is the massing together in concise and systematic form, of what has been most clearly and pertinently said, either by individual Socialist writers or by committees speaking for the party as a whole, on all of the main phases of Socialism. In their finished form they might, with some appropriateness, be termed mosaics: each pamphlet is an arrangement of parts from many sources according to a unitary design. Most of the separate pieces are, however, in the best sense classics: they are expressions of Socialist thought which, by general approval, have won authoritative rank. A classic, according to James Russell Lowell, is of itself "something neither ancient nor modern"; even the most recent writing may be considered classic if, for the mood it depicts or the thought it frames, it unites matter and style into an expression of approved merit. For the choice of selections the editor is alone responsible. Doubtless for some of the subjects treated another editor would have chosen differently. The difficulty indeed has been in deciding what to omit; for the mass of Socialist literature contains much that may be rightly called classic which obviously could not have been included in these brief volumes. That, in its turn, is the conception of all the attempts at emancipation on the part of the proletariat one of the social classes of our time. In order fully to understand the subject under discussion it will be meces sary to form a true notion of what is meant by a social class in general, and in particular Of the social class which is of special interest to us here. By the term social class, then, I understand a social group, the individuals of which are the representatives of some economic system. In using the words economic system I mean a given economic order, or an economic condition of things, which is characterized by one or more prominent economic principles. Any economic order is, in my view, the sum-total of all legal and moral ideas which regulate production and distribution for the time being; and economic principles is the name I give to that chain of motives which influences the economic activities of individuals. Excerpt from Elements of Socialism: A Text-Book Provisional definition: As we have already intimated, Socialism may be conveniently divided into four parts. No study of Socialism can be satisfactory, no definition of it can be complete, which does not consider it as (1) a oriti cism of existing society; (2) a philosophy of social evolution; (3) a social forecast or ideal; (4) a movement for the attain ment of the ideal. As a provisional definition, then, we may accept the following: Socialism is a criticism of existing society which attributes most of the poverty, Vice, crime and other social evils of today to the fact that, through the private or class ownership of the social forces of production and exchange, the actual producers of wealth are exploited by a class of non-producers; a theory of social evolution according to Which the rate and direction of social evolution are mainly determined by the development of the economic factors of production, distribution and exchange; a social forecast that the next epoch in the evolution of society will be dis tinguished by the social ownership and control of the prin cipal agencies of production and exchange, and by an equalization of opportunity as a result of this socialization; a movement, primarily consisting of members of the wealth producing class, which seeks to control all the powers of the State and to bring about the collective ownership and con trol of the principal means of production and exchange, in order that poverty, class antagonisms, Vice and other ill results of the existing social system may be abolished, and that a new and better social system may be attained. For the present edition I have very carefully revised the book in the light of the fresh knowledge and experience which we have gained since 1888. The changes I have made are such as have been requisite to bring it up to date in its references to recent and contemporary events or desirable for the further clearing up and development of a great and perplexing subject.
