This second edition of a unique text/reference identifies the appearance attributes of objects and the methods available for measuring them, bringing together much material not previously organized for ready reference. The primary premise here is that ``object appearance'' involves not only color, but such attributes as gloss, luster, and translucency. The first part of the book, concerned with nature of appearance, draws from the fields of physiology and psychology and considers the eye-brain combination and the way it receives and interprets light signals. This is followed by a consideration of the optical properties of objects from the physical standpoint. The second part of the book deals with the numerical scales used to measure object appearance. The discussion here draws on psychophysics in describing the uses of physical techniques to give numbers having psychological significance. The third part of the book covers instruments for the measurement of the attributes of object appearance, their principles of design, and a survey of the major ones in use. The final chapter discusses specific applications of appearance measurement. Includes appendixes and a glossary.

Colour and appearance perceptions are very complex psychological phenomena. Written by one of the foremost authorities in the field, this major two-volume work addresses the key topics required to understand the issues and manage colour effectively. Principles of colour appearance and measurement Volume 2 addresses the visual measurement of colour, methods of comparing colours, and the management of colour in industry. Volume 2 begins with an overview of the visual measurement of colour. Chapter 1 discusses means of colour communication and various visual attributes of colour. Chapter 2 then focuses on several popular colour order systems, and chapter 3 discusses various colour difference formulae and their use in colour comparison and control. Subsequent chapters review instrumental colorant formulation, metamerism, chromatic adaptation and colour constancy, methods of shade sorting and digital colour reproduction. - Addresses the means of colour communication and the various attributes of colour - Examines colour order systems and the methods of colour comparison - Reviews the management of colour in industry

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and appearance lies in the mind of the observer. The latter is playing an increasingly important role in nearly all of our buying decisions: it informs us as to the quality of an automobile cabin, the desirability of an iPhone, the handle of a woollen sweater - the list is endless.Given the exponential rise in internet commerce and the ubiquity of smart devices, the ability to predict buyers' perceptions formed from interaction with digital media is maybe more important than those obtained by handling the real article. Thus, the science of appearance metrology is becoming increasingly critical. It concerns the development of methodologies, procedures, and equipment which allow us to predict observers' perceptions. The field is therefore highly multidisciplinary: physical measurement, psychophysics, media generation, image processing, statistics, and vision science. This book is a compilation of recent research relating to perception and appearance.

Because of the overlapping interest of ASTM Committees E12 on Appearance of Materials and E18 on Sensory Evaluation of Materials and Products in vision and appearance, they have maintained liaison for many years, and joint sponsorship of this symposium was very appropriate. For Committee E12 the symposium effort represented an extension beyond instrumental measurements, which had received most of their attention. For Committee E18 it was a follow-up to ASTM Special Technical Publication 433, "Basic Principles of Sensory Evaluation" (1968), which included a chapter on vision and general chapters applying to all the senses. W. H. Danker, who was Chairman of Subcommittee E18.02 during the early planning in 1970 and 1971, was largely responsible for the initial proposal for a joint effort of the two committees and the later proposal that this effort take the form of a symposium. W. J. Kiernan, who was Chairman of Committee E12 in 1970, gave enthusiastic support to the proposed project and contributed many valuable suggestions for getting it underway.

The use of standard and reliable measurements is essential in many areas of life, but nowhere is it of more crucial importance than in the world of science, and physics in particular. This book contains 20 contributions presented as part of Course 206 of the International School of Physics Enrico Fermi on New Frontiers for Metrology: From Biology and Chemistry to Quantum and Data Science, held in Varenna, Italy, from 4 -13 July 2019. The Course was the 7th in the Enrico Fermi series devoted to metrology, and followed a milestone in the history of measurement: the adoption of new definitions for the base units of the SI. During the Course, participants reviewed the decision and discussed how the new foundation for metrology is opening new possibilities for physics, with several of the lecturers reflecting on the implications for an easier exploration of the unification of quantum mechanics and gravity. A wide range of other topics were covered, from measuring color and appearance to atomic weights and radiation, and including the application of metrological principles to the management and interpretation of very large sets of scientific data and the application of metrology to biology. The book also contains a selection of posters from the best of those presented by students at the Course. Offering a fascinating exploration of the latest thinking on the subject of metrology, this book will be of interest to researchers and practitioners from many fields.

When we were preparing the first edition of this book, the concept of de coherence was known only to a minority of physicists. In the meantime, a wealth of contributions has appeared in the literature - important ones as well as serious misunderstandings. The phenomenon itself is now experimen tally clearly established and theoretically well understood in principle. New fields of application, discussed in the revised book, are chaos theory, informa tion theory, quantum computers, neuroscience, primordial cosmology, some aspects of black holes and strings, and others. While the first edition arose from regular discussions between the authors, thus leading to a clear" entanglement" of their otherwise quite different chap ters, the latter have thereafter evolved more or less independently. While this may broaden the book's scope as far as applications and methods are con cerned, it may also appear confusing to the reader wherever basic assumptions and intentions differ (as they do). For this reason we have rearranged the or der of the authors: they now appear in the same order as the chapters, such that those most closely related to the "early" and most ambitious concept of decoherence are listed first. The first three authors (Joos, Zeh, Kiefer) agree with one another that decoherence (in contradistinction to the Copen hagen interpretation) allows one to eliminate primary classical concepts, thus neither relying on an axiomatic concept of observables nor on a probability interpretation of the wave function in terms of classical concepts.
