The author of The Measurement of Righteousness uses secular educational measurement and evaluation methods to illustrate the measurability of the spiritual state of man’s life through the performance of physical lifestyles and activities. The book scores and evaluates man’s activities in different perspectives: • Through physical activities of good and bad deeds • Through spiritual (faith-based practices) that determine their respective destinations, either Heaven (a place of bliss) or Hell (a place of torment), as illustrated on the front cover It also examines categories of men, their characteristics, and background types by inclination of godliness or devilishness. Man is viewed as being weighed on God’s word in relation to his obedience, believing that all about man’s sufferings in this world emanates from his disobedience to God’s word. Its consequent effect caused man the loss of his “paradise” known as the Garden of Eden. The book concludes by enjoining man “the wicked” to repent and be righteous. It also calls on believers to examine themselves and retrace their steps to be on the high side in righteousness on God’s scale to obtain eternal life in God’s kingdom on the day of judgment, after rapture of the “church” (believers or saints).

The doctrine of righteousness has been one of the major controversies in the body of Christ worldwide. The body of Christ seems not to be able to come to a consensus on this major doctrine. This has in a whole or part brought a severe retardation to the spiritual unity, growth, and development of the church of God. The church over the years has focused so much on only one dimension of this subject matter. Little attention has been given to the other parts. It is in view of this that this book is written, in an attempt to bring balance and to draw the attention of the church to the different dimensions or components concerning the matter of righteousness. It settles the controversies around the subject. Through this book, you will be enlightened on the different dimensions of righteousness, which the believer must know and walk in.

The second volume of this three-volume work exegetes and comments on every occurrence of the Hebrew terms for righteousness in the Old Testament. It begins with a discussion of apperception and deductive method and concludes with an afterword on righteousness and ontology. The ontological argument affirms that God’s aseity is the foundation of righteousness in the Bible, and thus of all true righteousness. Righteousness is being true to God, and God is always true to himself, including in his self-existence. Other terms in the righteous word group, such as “righteous” and “justify,” are considered, along with the important word pair, “righteousness and justice,” in semantic domain studies in the first three chapters. Semantic domain studies show that terms like “upright,” “blameless,” and “good” are qualifiers of righteousness. Whatever the flavor or nuance of the terms for righteousness may be in different OT contexts, however, study shows that the underlying sense of righteousness is conformity to God’s Being and doing, and the same is true of the righteousness of God.

This important book is a composite of articles by John Nelson Darby which have been extracted from the Doctrinal Series of his Collected Writings volume 7 and volume 10. The articles deal with many aspects of divine righteousness : the true nature of justif ication, the Christian’s relationship to the Law, and related subjects. Of particular interest is the matter of so called imputed righteousness. The teaching that the Christian is under the “moral law” is dealt with in several of the articles. Some of the articles were originally part of a larger debate between Darby and his antagonists. The thread of these debates may be a little challenging for some to follow as the original articles of Darby’s opponents have been long out of print. Nevertheless, a careful reading and study of these will greatly reward the sincere student looking into these most important doctrines.

Why is there such an ethical emphasis in Jesus’ gospel proclamation? This work finds the answer in Jesus meeting his audience within their own conceptual realms and then expanding those realms to point to the nature of his salvation. The bulk of this work investigates the soteriology of Second Temple Judaism, especially of the Qumran Scrolls. The apocalyptic lesson was the demand of a greater covenantal obedience, held in tension with God’s grace, a demand met through sectarian revelation and involving a somewhat diverse messianism. Within these conceptions, Jesus affirms that salvation is indeed for the “righteous,” but as defined through himself as the unique Messiah. This work is particularly useful regarding the Jesus—Paul debate, for it provides a diachronic solution grounded in the cultural-historical milieu of the times.

Ellet Joseph Waggoner (1855 – 1916) was a leading Seventh-day Adventist preacher and writer. In his famous book Christ and His Righteousness, he writes, "Christ has been set forth by God as the One through whom forgiveness of sins is to be obtained; and this forgiveness consists simply in the declaration of His righteousness (which is the righteousness of God) for their remission. God, “who is rich in mercy” (Eph. 2:4), and who delights in it, puts His own righteousness on the sinner who believes in Jesus, as a substitute for his sins. Surely, this is a profitable exchange for the sinner, and it is no loss to God, for He is infinite in holiness, and the supply can never be diminished." Chapters include: 1. How Shall We Consider Christ? 2. Is Christ God? 3. Is Christ a Created Being? 4. God Manifest in the Flesh 5. Important Practical Lessons 6. Christ the Lawgiver 7. The Righteousness of God 8. The Lord Our Righteousness 9. Acceptance With God 10. The Victory of Faith 11. Bond-Servants and Freemen 12. Practical Illustrations of Deliverance From Bondage
