When, after the agreeable fatigues of solicitation, Mrs Millamant set out a long bill of conditions subject to which she might by degrees dwindle into a wife, Mirabell offered in return the condition that he might not thereby be beyond measure enlarged into a husband. With age and experience in research come the twin dangers of dwindling into a philosopher of science while being enlarged into a dotard. The philosophy of science, I believe, should not be the preserve of senile scientists and of teachers of philosophy who have themselves never so much as understood the contents of a textbook of theoretical physics, let alone done a bit of mathematical research or even enjoyed the confidence of a creating scientist. On the latter count I run no risk: Any reader will see that I am untrained (though not altogether unread) in classroom philosophy. Of no ignorance of mine do I boast, indeed I regret it, but neither do I find this one ignorance fatal here, for few indeed of the great philosophers to explicate whose works hodiernal professors of phil osophy destroy forests of pulp were themselves so broadly and specially trained as are their scholiasts. In attempt to palliate the former count I have chosen to collect works written over the past thirty years, some of them not published before, and I include only a few very recent essays.

This volume of scientific papers is dedicated with gratitude and esteem to Ronald Rivlin and is offered as a token of appreciation by former students, col laborators, and friends. Ronald Rivlin's name is synonymous with modem developments in contin uum mechanics. His outstanding pioneering theoretical and experimental re ·search in finite elasticity is a landmark. From his work there has followed a spate of developments in which he played the leading role-the theory of fiber-rein forced materials, the developments of the theory of constitutive equations, the theory of materials with memory, the theory of the fracture of elastomers, the theory of viscoelastic fluids and solids, the development of nonlinear crystal physics, the theory of small deformations superimposed on large, and the effect of large initial strain on wave propagation. It is in Rivlin's work that universal relations were first recognized. Here also are to be found lucid explanations of physical phenomena such as the Poynting effect for elastic rods in torsion. Addi tionally, he and his co-workers predicted the presence of secondary flows for viscoelastic fluids in straight pipes of noncircular cross section under a uniform pressure head. While some others may have displayed a cavalier lack of concern for physical reality and an intoxication with mathematical idiom, Rivlin has al ways been concerned with genuine mathematical and physical content. All of his papers contain interesting and illuminating material-and may be read with profit by anyone interested in continuum mechanics.

This is a book on the dissipative dynamics of ordered fluids, with a particular focus on liquid crystals. It covers a whole range of different theories, mainly concerned with nematic liquid crystals in both their chiral and nonchiral variants. They then go on to develop a general framework in which continuum theories for ordered fluids can be phrased. This book has been written with two purposes, as a textbook for engineering courses and as a reference book for engineers and scientists. The book is an outcome of several lecture courses. These include lectures given to graduate students at the Asian Institute of Technology for several years, a course on elasticity for University of Tokyo graduate students in the spring of 1979, and courses on elasticity, viscoelasticity and ftnite deformation at the National University of Singapore from May to November 1985. In preparing this book, I kept three objectives in mind: ftrst, to provide sound fundamental knowledge of solid mechanics in the simplest language possible; second, to introduce effective analytical and numerical solution methods; and third, to impress on readers that the subject is beautiful, and is accessible to those with only a standard mathematical background. In order to meet those objectives, the ftrst chapter of the book is a review of mathematical foundations intended for anyone whose background is an elementary knowledge of differential calculus, scalars and vectors, and Newton's laws of motion. Cartesian tensors are introduced carefully. From then on, only Cartesian tensors in the indicial notation, with subscript as indices, are used to derive and represent all theories.
