Four years have passed since the last edition (3rd) of this book was published. In the intervening years, several reviews of this book have provided highly encouraging remarks about the value of this book in transmitting information on classification and treatment of psychiatric disorders to the audience. We are proposing to revise all chapters with an eye on accuracy and ease of use, and this is an especially timely endeavor with the upcoming publication of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual V. All the appropriate new information on biology, etiology, diagnosis and treatment of psychiatric disorders will be added to the current proposed edition. It is our goal to recruit the same authors (if possible) who contributed to the previous edition. While all chapters will be updated (see TOC), those marked by asterisks will be the most likely to undergo more revision. Psychiatry has emerged as a burgeoning scientific field with major advances in etiology and treatment of several disorders. Just as there was excitement in the anatomic advances that took place a hundred years ago when Emil Kraepelin and his collaborators took on the enormous task of classification of psychiatric disorders based on rational scientific thinking, new advances in genetics, biochemistry, neuroanatomy and pharmacotherapy of mental disorders have brought us even closer to a better understanding of complex disorders like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression and even autism. The major goal of the previous edition of this classic book was to update the busy clinician, psychiatric resident and medical student with the most up-to-date information on etiology, diagnosis and treatment of psychiatric disorders. This goal remains the focus of the fourth edition of this book. In this updated and expanded edition, the reader will be provided with the most contemporary information and literature supported by a close survey of the field. This new edition of this classic title, with its focus on biologic and medical aspects of psychiatry, will continue to be of significant help to all interested in the scientific practice of psychiatry.

Excerpt from The Basis of Psychiatry (Psychobiological Medicine) A Guide to the Study of Mental Disorders, for Students and Practitioners As the domain of general medicine in recent years has become considerably broadened, and many of the newer facts have been brought to light through the channels of Biology, and as the field of "traditional General Physiology" has become more or less fully occupied by Experimental Biology, so the mode of approach to the problems of Psychiatry is following similar trends. This change in the direction of approach to psychiatry has come about through the development of a closer relationship between the subjects of biology and psychology; in fact, the two branches of science overlap to the extent that in the study of many problems it is difficult to determine where the one begins and the other ends, for the reason that it is but the same "science" viewed from different aspects. The statement in a text-book on psychology that "Psychology is the science of behavior" presents one of the striking evidences of the change in point of view of the psychologist, which is steadily developing and is becoming more widely accepted. As physicians and practitioners we have come to consider the group of mental disorders which belong to the class of recoverable psychoses not primarily as mental diseases, but as reflections of some bodily disorder, which, through its effect upon the organ of adjustment - the nervous mechanism and its lower and higher (psychic) reflexes - prevents the patient from making appropriate adaptations to environmental conditions, and therefore constitutes a thoroughly biological problem. The reactions of the patient as a whole individual form the subject underlying every problem in psychiatry. In order to solve the question there must be an examination of all bodily functions before an intelligent conclusion can be reached from the standpoint of diagnosis, prognosis and treatment of the mental condition. In the present work there has been an attempt to present to the student of psychiatry, the practitioner of medicine and others interested in the disorders of adjustment, an arrangement of the subjects in a concise form, yet embracing a sufficient number of biological and psychological data to indicate the course which this viewpoint requires us to follow. As a method of approach to the study of psychiatry the present mode of presentation has been found useful to the writer. Designed and written for the student new to psychiatry, the Introductory Textbook of Psychiatry, Sixth Edition provides a concise summary of diagnosis and classification, interviewing and assessment, the neurobiological basis of psychiatry, the various psychiatric disorders, treatment modalities, psychotropic medications, and much more -- all in a DSM-5®-compatible format. The Study Guide to this bestselling text is similarly structured and written to enhance comprehension and consolidation of the knowledge acquired from the text. The format replicates what might be encountered in specialty-certifying exams, with each question followed by multiple-choice responses, including plausible "distractors." In the answer guide, the question is repeated and the answer is then provided, along with the reasoning for the correct response and why the other answers are incorrect. Each question is linked to a page in the textbook, making it easy for the reader to further review the topic. As an ancillary resource, the book has much to recommend it: * Although uniquely useful for medical students, beginning psychiatry residents, and those studying for board exams, the Study Guide can be used equally well in a variety of training programs, including advanced practice nursing, physician assistant programs, social work, and psychology.* The authors of the text are accomplished writers as well as clinicians, and the book is valued for its engaging writing style and consistent structure. The Study Guide mirrors these strengths, and the resulting volume is accessible, easy to use, interesting, and highly readable.* The guide builds on the text's many case vignettes, useful clinical "pearls," and a multitude of self-assessment questions, covering everything a student new to psychiatry needs to know. The Introductory Textbook of Psychiatry is designed to provide medical students, beginning residents, and others with a solid foundation and orientation to the field, and the Study Guide is the perfect companion volume to the classic text, reinforcing critical concepts and testing retention of indispensable information.

Why Psychiatry Is A Branch Of Medicine written by Samuel B. Guze and has been published by Oxford University Press, USA this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1992 with Medicine categories.

This groundbreaking new book clarifies the debate about treating mental illness by applying the medical model--the traditional way of thinking about disease--to psychiatric disorders, an approach that ties clinical practice and research to the broader perspective of modern biology. In the author's view, brain function variations are involved in the development of psychopathological syndromes, while at the same time, subjective experiences--cognitive and emotional--are important manifestations of brain physiology in health and disease. Guze's argument emphasizes the need for careful attention to psychiatric diagnosis and to each of three main research strategies inherent in the medical model: the epidemiological, the clinical, and the biological. He emphasizes the importance of controlled studies in all three strategies, noting the many pitfalls associated with drawing facile conclusions from apparent associations. How psychotherapy fits into the medical model and can be joined with biological psychiatry is an important facet of his discussion. He also deals with a number of social, ethical, and philosophical questions that psychiatrists face including causality, teleology, consciousness, mind-brain relationships, reductionism, and free will. The book offers stimulating reading for all psychiatrists, psychologists, and general readers interested in the newest ideas in treating mentally illness
