Excerpt from The Medical Times and Gazette, Vol. 47: A Journal of Medical Science, Literature, Criticism and News; Volume II for 1873 Lord Stanhope moved an address to the Queen, praying her Majesty to take into consideration the institution of an Order of Merit, to be bestowed upon men who have distinguished themselves in science, literature, and art. He stated that there was no country of any importance but England that had not made some provision for the proper recognition of such claims to public distinction. The recognition of art and science by the grant of decorations had, instead of advancing, actually retrograded in England, and he thought it would be desirable to give to literary men and artists a distinction similar to those Orders which statesmen and military com manders were ambitious to receive. Ared riband was formerly granted to men of science, and it added to the dignity with which Sir Joseph Banks used to preside over the Royal Society; but this was no longer the case. This had been strikingly shown by the decoration of the Bath being con ferred on Professor Owen, a man of great eminence, who was eligible as the holder of an office in the Civil Service - viz., at the British Museum; while he apprehended that a man of equal eminence, Sir Charles Lyell, would be excluded. Excerpt from The Medical Times and Gazette, Vol. 2 In consequence of this faith in facts he overlooks none; he passes by none. Now, a common error is to think some facts more important than others but all are important, and if one is left out, a whole heap may fall asunder. Now, Harvey omits nothing; he commences with the most obvious, and pro weds step by step; nothing is blurred; nothing is left 111 defined. His work was composed before the Novum Organon was published, but it has been well said by Willis that it might have been planned on the model of that system. This ambitious book presents an across-the-board study of medicine, in any urban centre, for any period of British history. By selecting Wakefield and Huddersfield as contrasting types of northern towns, and examining in details their systems of medical care, Dr Marland has written a local history that says something important about the country as a whole. Wakefield and Huddersfield contrasted in their economic demographic and social development during the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, allowing an effective comparative analysis of medical facilities in the two communities. By drawing on diverse sources: from Poor Law and philanthropy to self-help organisations, fringe medicine and medical practice, the book places the development of medical services against the backdrop of the communities in which they evolved, their class structure, organization and social, civic and economic developments.
