Illustrated Medieval Alexander Books In French Verse written by David John Athole Ross and has been published by Brepols Publishers this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019 with Illumination of books and manuscripts, French categories.

"The core of this book on the French verse Alexander in France and Italy was written by eminent Alexander specialist David J.A. Ross, who left an incomplete typescript at his death. In its emphasis on illustration, this book offers new perspectives on the reception of one of the most popular medieval heroes. Ross's analysis of the illustrations proves that despite some convergent patterns there is no iconographic programme that coordinates the three major verse traditions as there is for the versions in prose. Nevertheless, the verse versions continued to be copied and illustrated long after the emergence of prose. The editors have expanded Ross's text, as he wished, to include a comparative analysis of the iconography and they have situated each manuscript as far as possible in its cultural context, demonstrating that the producers of the verse Alexander were also responsible for writing and illustrating a large number of other vernacular and liturgical books in Northern France, Paris, the South, and Italy. This volume is a sequel to Ross's Studies in the Alexander Romance and his Illustrated medieval Alexander-books in Germany and the Netherlands, and makes available an extensive corpus of high-quality images of this great hero."--

The Medieval Romance Of Alexander written by Nigel Translated by Bryant and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012 with categories.

The figure of Alexander the Great haunted the medieval imagination - as much as Arthur, as much as Charlemagne. His story was translated more often in medieval Europe than any work except the Gospels. Yet only small sections of the Alexander Romance have been translated into modern French, and Nigel Bryant's is the first translation into English. The Deeds and Conquests of Alexander the Great is Jehan Wauquelin's superb compendium, written for the Burgundian court in the mid-fifteenth century, which draws together all the key elements of the Alexandrian tradition. With great clarity and intelligence Wauquelin produced a redaction of all the major Alexander romances of the twelfth, thirteenth and fourteenth centuries - including the verse Roman d'Alexandre, The Vows of the Peacock and La Venjance Alixandre - to tell the whole story of Alexander's miraculous birth and childhood, his conquests of Persia and India, his battles with fabulous beasts and outlandish peoples, his journeys in the sky and under the sea, his poisoning at Babylon and the vengeance taken by his son. This is an accomplished and exciting work by a notable writer at the Burgundian court who perfectly understood the appeal of the great conqueror to ambitious dukes intent upon extending their dominions. Nigel Bryant has translated five major Arthurian romances from medieval French, including Perceforest in which Alexander features prominently. He has also translated the fourteenth-century chronicles of Jean le Bel.

Daily Living In The Twelfth Century Based On The Observations Of Alexander Neckam In London And Paris written by Urban T. Holmes (Jr.) and has been published by Univ of Wisconsin Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1952 with Cities and towns, Medieval categories.

This is a book for all who are curious to know how it was to live in another time. It presents a new approach to the study of medieval life: first, it concentrates on a 50-year period, 1150-1200, not making the usual broad generalizations about the Middle Ages as though they were a single, homogeneous era; second, it presents medieval life through the experience of a medieval man. The reader goes on a journey with Alexander Neckham, rides the amounts he rode, lodges at hospices such as might have received him, walks the streets of London and Paris as Alexander found them, and visits the schools and baronial estates that he might have visited. Mr. Holmes draws steadily upon his wide, varied, and accurate knowledge of medieval literature -- Latin, French, and English -- to say nothing of iconography, painting, and architecture. The reader has a sense of being guided by two men familiar with the ground, one a medieval man, the other a modern expert. - Back cover.
