Excerpt from The Melodic Method in School Music: A Manual for Teachers and Supervisors Music to-day ranks as one of the major subjects in the elementary school course. It is, indeed, the only subject taught consecutively throughout the entire course of eight years. The importance attached to school music is shown by the amount of time it receives. From 60 to 150 minutes a week are devoted to class instruction, the average for all grades throughout the country being about 100 minutes. Assembly singing generally occupies from 5 to 15 minutes a day, a total, on the average, of about one hour in the week. With the extra time spent in preparing songs for commencements and other exercises, and the marches usually played for assembling and dismissing schools, music is seen to receive the surprising total of two and one-half hours in the school week of 25 hours. This textbook will teach the concepts of octave, phrase, and melodic contour, as well as learning to draw the melodic contour of a phrase.Students will be able to fully distinguish the difference between major and minor keys and chords, and will apply their knowledge of melodies by playing on classroom instruments, such as a recorder, from a score. Students will continue their education on musical symbols and markings, culminating in the ability to play simple pieces from a score. In this new edition of their groundbreaking Kodály Today, Mícheál Houlahan and Philip Tacka offer an expertly-researched, thorough, and -- most importantly -- practical approach to transforming curriculum goals into tangible, achievable musical objectives and effective lesson plans. Their model -- grounded in the latest research in music perception and cognition -- outlines the concrete practices behind constructing effective teaching portfolios, selecting engaging music repertoire for the classroom, and teaching musicianship skills successfully to elementary students of all degrees of proficiency. Addressing the most important questions in creating and teaching Kodály-based programs, Houlahan and Tacka write through a practical lens, presenting a clear picture of how the teaching and learning processes go hand-in-hand. Their innovative approach was designed through a close, six-year collaboration between music instructors and researchers, and offers teachers an easily-followed, step-by-step roadmap for developing students' musical understanding and metacognition skills. A comprehensive resource in the realm of elementary music education, this book is a valuable reference for all in-service music educators, music supervisors, and students and instructors in music education.
