As I slid on my knees, I could feel the smooth marble floor under my fingertips. My gauntlets long since lost, my helmet dented and cast to the side. My slide came to a stop and I turned on my left knee and raised my sword, Hunnin, in a guard position. I could see the blood drip from its tip. Hunnin had found its mark and had bit deep. I looked past Hunnin to the enemy I had been fighting for more than an hour. He was on his knees with his back to me and I knew from the blood pouring from the wound in his side, I knew he had only seconds before he bleeds out. I walked around to his front. I looked up to the only window in the room and the man that I had been hunting. I thought to see a look of fear or anger on his face at the loss of his champion but it held only a smile. My heart sank as I knelt in front of my foe and removed her helmet. My wife smiled at me and said, "He told me you were dead. Thank you for freeing me, my love." With her last breath she slumped forward into my arms. The maniac slammed back to full control of my mind. This time. I let him have full control. I can still feel the blood that followed and hear the screams of those that followed my wife to the grave. With Freya at my side, and both Hunnin and Munnin in hand, I became the maniac again and would not stop till the world was mine.

Mesmerism, Medusa, and the Muse: The Romantic Discourse of Spontaneous Creativity explores the connections among the Romantic discourse of spontaneous literary creativity, the nineteenth-century cultural practice of mesmerism, and the mythical Medusa as an icon of the gendered gaze. An analysis of Medusan mesmerism in the poetry of Mary Robinson, Samuel Taylor Coleridge, Percy Bysshe Shelley and Letitia Elizabeth Landon (L.E.L.) and the prose of Mary Shelley reveals that these Romantic-era writers equate the enraptured state that produces spontaneous literary creation with the mesmeric trance. These writers employ Medusan imagery to portray both the mesmerist and the mesmerized subject, a conflation of subject/object positions that complicates issues of agency, subjectivity, and gender. Images of Medusan mesmerism ultimately work to deconstruct Romantic ideological dichotomies of self/other, female/male, muse/artist, and sublime/beautiful. In contrast to a traditional, masculinized Romantic discourse that emphasizes self-possession, this study uncovers a feminized, improvisational, Romantic discourse, characterized “Other-possession,” an assumption of the mesmerized subject position that enhances subjective fluidity. This study interrogates the Romantic discourse of spontaneous literary creativity through an examination of Romantic poetry, prose, and theory that utilizes mesmeric and Medusan metaphors to suggest creative inspiration.Building on recent scholarship about improvisational poetics, the subversive potential of mesmerism, and Medusa as a feminist icon, this work suggests that the mesmeric Medusan muse not only enables creativity for women writers but also provides a mirror in which they view (and through which they give voice to) their own societal oppression. The mesmeric Medusan muse in Romantic-era literature—from the Ancient Mariner and the Frankenstein monster to the tragic, abandoned Sapphic poetess—often represents the face of oppression, an unwelcome and monstrous truth in nineteenth-century British society. For women writers in particular, braving the stare of the Medusan muse enhances empathy, and therefore inspiration and literary productivity.

Mary Robinson’s work has begun again to assume a central place in discussions of Romanticism. A writer of the 1790’s—a decade which saw the birth of Romanticism, revolution, and enormous popular engagement with political ideas—Robinson was acknowledged in her time as a leading poet. Her writing exhibits great variety: charm, theatricality, and emotional resonance are all characteristics Robinson displays. She was by turns a poet of sensibility, a poet of popular culture, a chronicler of the major events of the time, and a participant in some of its chief aesthetic innovations. This long-awaited collection is the first critical edition of her poems.

Life's perceptions are not always as we would think them to be. Things have a habit of changing, regardless of time. There are always ups and downs, as I lie here upon the bed of life, gazing out the window while being shrouded in the warmth that only the sun can provide. It's absolute bliss and, for a dog, I have no responsibilities, no requirements, and no need for anything, well not at this point in my life. The meanderings of such a character have never been so colorful. Hello, my name is Magoo, Jaxon Magoo. I am a real dog, and my owner Frederick Thomas is using me to partly tell the story of his earlier years, when he grew up, mostly with farm animals as pets and friends. You've all heard the term, "checks and balances", well this guy didn't have any, and probably never really has had very many along his life's journey. Life has funny twists and turns, and one man's poison is another's treats so to speak, bizarre as it may sound. So why me and what sets this story apart. As seen partly through my eyes, the first few chapters anyway, you'll see an often crazy, macabre, and innocent look on the life from the '60s and '70s. Not everyone's ideal life, but an adventure itself. And that just BookOne - the easy read. And with a skilled orator such as myself, I must confess that I have more of a grasp on things than what one realizes. With a world of color, there is so much to say, and little that can be forgotten. The life of Frederick Thomas was one where living on a rural farm in the backblocks of Taihape, NZ, didn't really allow for school friends to drop by, and one had to make their own way in life. The domains of the human psyche evolved quickly, as did his mind and expressions. Initially, the character gives me creative license to string together a few words to excite the mind and flavor the senses, and I am sure that with the limited vocabulary and the words at my attention, you'll get the drift and be able to work out that there is more in life than what initially meets the eye! By the time you get to chapter 8, he'll immerse himself more as he develops and matures along the journey, so enjoy the ride. Buckle up, and get your cuppa, as we're sure once you start, you won't want to stop.
