The Memory of Music tells the story of one Irish family spanning 100 turbulent years: 1916 to 2016 Betty O Fogarty is proud and clever. Spurred on by her belief in husband Seamus's talent as a violin-maker and her desire to escape rural life, they elope to Dublin. She expects life to fulfil all her dreams. To her horror, she discovers that they can only afford to live in the notorious poverty-stricken tenements. Seamus becomes obsessed with republican politics, neglecting his lucrative craft. And, as Dublin is plunged into chaos and turmoil at Easter 1916, Betty gives birth to her first child to the sound of gunfire and shelling. But Betty vows that she will survive war and want, and move her little family out of the tenements. Nothing will stand in her way. One hundred years later, secrets churn their way to the surface and Betty s grandchildren and great-grandchildren uncover both Betty's ruthlessness and her unique brand of heroism.

Winner of the ASCAP Deems Taylor Award and Society of Music Theory's Wallace Berry Award This bold challenge to conventional notions about medieval music disputes the assumption of pure literacy and replaces it with a more complex picture of a world in which literacy and orality interacted. Asking such fundamental questions as how singers managed to memorize such an enormous amount of music and how music composed in the mind rather than in writing affected musical style, Anna Maria Busse Berger explores the impact of the art of memory on the composition and transmission of medieval music. Her fresh, innovative study shows that although writing allowed composers to work out pieces in the mind, it did not make memorization redundant but allowed for new ways to commit material to memory. Since some of the polyphonic music from the twelfth century and later was written down, scholars have long assumed that it was all composed and transmitted in written form. Our understanding of medieval music has been profoundly shaped by German philologists from the beginning of the last century who approached medieval music as if it were no different from music of the nineteenth century. But Medieval Music and the Art of Memory deftly demonstrates that the fact that a piece was written down does not necessarily mean that it was conceived and transmitted in writing. Busse Berger's new model, one that emphasizes the interplay of literate and oral composition and transmission, deepens and enriches current understandings of medieval music and opens the field for fresh interpretations.

In so doing, he analyzes how the brain is triggered by the memory of programs, songs, and individual sounds. "Calypsonians have long been the 'voice of the people', delivering the complaints, criticisms and even the solutions to political leaders. In its earliest manifestations, calypso music emerged in response to a cultural climate that demanded creative modes of expression that could both resist and record political and historical changes taking place in Trinidad and Tobago. Since the 1920s and 1930s, calypsonians typically have composed songs that chronicle their observations and opinions on current events focusing on specific occurrences, from local scandals to current affairs while also examining broader trends. Not only has calypso served as an unofficial record of historical events, it emerged as a cultural weapon that yielded tremendous sway within the general audiences of the Caribbean region. This collection includes contributions from calypsonians, critics, novelists and poets alike, all engaged in representing Caribbean culture in its myriad forms. It represents an array of convergences across critical perspectives, political and social agendas, generations and national boundaries. The work of numerous calypsonians and other singers are explored, including Sparrow; Kitchener; Chalkdust; Denise Belfon; and writers such as Samuel Selvon, V.S. Naipaul, Jean Rhys, Errol John, Paul Marshall, Earl Lovelace and Lashkmi Persaud. The comparative analyses provide an interdisciplinary approach to Cultural Studies making the volume essential reading for students, scholars and calypso enthusiasts. "

Music Therapy And Music Based Interventions In Neurology written by Kerry Devlin and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2024-02-16 with Medical categories.
This book synthesizes knowledge about the myriad ways music can support the physical and psychosocial needs of people living with neurological diagnoses. It may be a useful tool for those working or training as music therapists, as well as clinicians and patients interested in the use of music and rhythm to address individualized healthcare goals. The editors of this book advocate for a collaborative, holistic approach to the implementation of music-based interventions, acknowledging that different (and at times, conflicting) approaches do exist – and that different patients may require exploration of different approaches to have their needs and desires met in ways most meaningful to them. The book’s many contributors embody this desire to hold space for wide-ranging views on clinical practice through the ways they share their own perspectives as music therapists, neurologists, nurses, speech and language pathologists, and neuroscience researchers from across the globe. Each chapter is centered around clinical work in context with a specific patient community – be that a diagnosis (e.g., movement disorders), shared culture (e.g., autistic culture), disease stage (e.g., end of life), or targeted clinical need (e.g., psychosocial support and/or functional performance) – and features a summary of available research with case examples and clinical descriptions to highlight different conceptualizations of the role of music in the care of patients with neurologic diagnoses.

The first part of the volume defines the psychological, biological, and neuroscientific basis of the therapeutic use of music. Then, various chapters describe the main application techniques (both active and receptive) exploring their therapeutic rationale, purposes, applications in preventive and therapeutic-rehabilitation settings, and possible methods of assessment. An overview of the main clinical areas addressed by music-based therapeutic interventions is also presented, including references to scientific literature, systematic and meta-analytic reviews as well as studies with rigorous methodologies (Randomized Controlled Trials). The final chapter focuses on research, outlining the current state of the art and possible future scenarios within this specific context. The authors of this book are scholars and practitioners in music therapy and related disciplines with recognized experience in clinical and research settings. This book will be an invaluable tool for individuals with an interest in music therapy and its application in clinical settings, such as students studying music therapy, practicing music therapists, researchers, and professionals in related disciplines.
