It seems that these days we are far too busy for independent thinking. There has been a steady decline of interest in substance and intellectual humor, critical thinking is endangered, and the yin and yang of discourse is rapidly diminishing. As Anthony Storr wisely observed, “Originality implies being bold enough to go beyond accepted norms,” and author Ronnie G. Shaeffer has found that deviation from regularity is his true daily dessert. His new book, The Mental Circus, is an engaging quote-a-day collection of insights and humor from the famous to the not-so-famous, including Shaeffer’s own quotes, notes, and artwork. This easy-to-read collection looks at life, love, and the pursuit of happiness, with valuable life lessons to help you develop an enlightened personal philosophy. It’s sure to make you think, possibly embolden a creative thought, and give you a glimpse into someone else’s head—with the ultimate purpose of expanding, improving, questioning, and delighting in your own humanity.

In this volume, twenty-four creators come together with three scholars to discuss Contemporary Circus, bridging the divide between practice and theory. Lavers, Leroux, and Burtt offer conversations across four key themes: Apparatus, Politics, Performers, and New Work. Extensively illustrated with fifty photos of Contemporary Circus productions, and extensively annotated, Contemporary Circus thematically groups and contextualises extracts of conversations to provide a sophisticated and wide-ranging study supported by critical theory. Of interest to both practitioners and scholars, Contemporary Circus uses the lens of ‘contestation,’ or calling things into question, to provide a portal into ways of seeing today’s circus performance. There is a weight to being alive. Everyone bears life’s stones: some stones are light, others heavy; some are significant, others miniscule. They are our upbringing, environment, memories, mental and physical health, decisions we have made, lessons we have learned, people we interact with, experiences we have had, and other factors—for better or worse or with no particular outcome at all. Carrying Stones into the Colorful Unknown presents one man’s exploration in verse of his stones and the life he has lived thus far through various tones and experiments in style and format. These poems consider the monotony, struggles, uncertainties, humors, and joys he has experienced and people he has interacted with in life, complemented by photographs from his own collection. This poetry collection seeks to serve as a companion to contemporary poetry lovers and to anyone who ponders the weight of being alive for all life is in our modern world.

A true story of taming OCD: “Her description of her escalating illness is irreverent, brutally honest, and compelling [and] her successes are inspiring.” —Booklist It’s like the meanest, wildest monkey running around my head, constantly looking for ways to bite me. That was how Kirsten Pagacz described her OCD to her therapist in their first session when she was well into her thirties. She’d been following orders from this mean taskmaster for twenty years, without understanding why. The tapping, counting, cleaning, and ordering brought her comfort and structure, two things lacking in her family life. But it never lasted. The loathsome self-talk only intensified, and the rituals she had to perform got more bizarre. By high school, she was anorexic and a substance abuser—common “shadow syndromes” of OCD. By adulthood, she could barely hide her problems and held on to jobs and friends through sheer grit. Help finally came in the form of a miraculously well-timed public service announcement about OCD—at last, her illness had an identity. After finally learning how to conquer her OCD, Pagacz shares her story—from her traumatic childhood to the escalation of her disorder to her triumph over it—along with knowledge and insight about such techniques as meditation, yoga, cognitive-behavioral therapy, medication, and exposure therapy, to help others leave the OCD circus and live a better life.

Psychological Projective Techniques And The Circus Phenomenon written by Ann M. Bahr and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1999 with Art therapy categories.

Abstract: This study was designed to determine if participants who drew circus characters with a level of risk, would have a lower Global Assessment of Functioning (GAF) level. The researcher hypothesized that a significant relationship would support the validity of the hypothesis and the assessment. Participants from a mental health day treatment program (N=30) were asked to complete a survey on the circus and a drawing, the Circus Phenomenon. The participants were gathered over a three month period of time. Participants met with the researcher individually for about 20 min. GAF scores were found by the researcher in individual client files. No significant difference (p=.398) was found between the scores on the Circus Phenomenon and the GAF scores. Possible reasons for the difference included a narrow range of GAF scores, or inaccurate GAF scores, and the interaction of participants with each other.

Performing Psychologies written by Nicola Shaughnessy and has been published by Bloomsbury Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-02-07 with Performing Arts categories.

Performing Psychologies offers new perspectives on arts and health, focussing on the different ways in which performance interacting with psychology can enhance understanding of the mind. The book challenges stereotypes of disability, madness and creativity, addressing a range of conditions (autism, dementia and schizophrenia) and performance practices including staged productions and applied work in custodial, health and community settings. Featuring case studies ranging from Hamlet to The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, the pioneering work of companies such as Spare Tyre and Ridiculusmus, and embracing dance and music as well as theatre and drama, the volume offers new perspectives on the dynamic interactions between performance, psychology and states of mind. It contains contributions from psychologists, performance scholars, therapists and healthcare professionals, who offer multiple perspectives on working through performance-based media. Presenting a richly interdisciplinary and collaborative investigation of the arts in practice, this volume opens up new ways of thinking about the performance of psychologies, and about how psychologies perform.
