Excerpt from The Merchant of Antwerp A single traveler, seated in a corner of the car, appeared not to belong to their company. He was a young man, very handsomely dressed in black, whose appearance denoted, if not wealth, at least great personal care. His fine cloth coat fitted his figure without a crease; his cravat was tied with art, and his glossy gloves covered fingers which heavy work seemed never to have hardened. As he kept his eyes down, and occasionally smiled, some of the gay archers were inclined to amuse themselves at the expense of the young dreamer; but when he raised his head and looked at his traveling companions, his countenance seemed to make a deep impression upon them, and, without knowing why, all appeared to feel a respectful so much they for the unknown. The features of the young man were regular a bright color tinged his cheeks, and his black hair curled luxuriantly round his finely formed head but what particularly impressed the archers was something strange in his large blue eyes, a look full of fire, of pride, and of self-reliance, but at the same time so gentle, so unaffected, so kind, that he inspired every one with confidence and esteem. The archers recommenced singing with new energy, and the young man, buried in thought, had again bowed his head, when the train stopped at the station of Malines. The gay band noisily left the carriage, the whistle sounded, and the train again started on its way. A smile lighted the face of the young man, and ho looked around him as though surprised at his sudden isolation. Excerpt from Rubens The awakening was terrible for these merchants and peaceful Citizens, lulled into security by well being. They were suddenly forced into familiarity with horrible fear, dread of massacre, pillage and ruin, and in this people, plunged against their will into a life and death struggle, fierce feeling was temporarily aroused and the peaceful equilibrium of moral qualities was destroyed. It was the sons Of the men who suffered this anguish and disaster who applauded Rubens and his school. They found their own emotions in an art where robust and tranquil health was rent by sudden passion and brutality; they recognised the athletic executioners, the shrieking martyrs, and the suffering, fainting. Excerpt from A Holiday Study of Cities and Ports North and quickly found an exciting interest in their push and energy, and in the scientific thoroughness with which they prepare easy paths for commerce, or expend the results of their industry in streets and squares and boulevards and public buildings. Such are the rivalries of trade, and so keen is the struggle for existence, if not for pre-eminence, that the seaports of Belgium, Holland, Germany and England, and, in a lesser way, of France, have been driven to vast outlays for the perfecting of their ports and of their transportation facilities. Holland built the North Sea Canal and the Rotterdam waterway and the vast docks to hold the commerce of her two ports, and she has been so abundantly rewarded that still greater docks are planned. The series of docks at Antwerp shows Belgian commercial life in great activity, and vast additions to these accommodations are in contemplation. The marvellous and sudden growth of the German ports and merchant fleets, the building by Germany of the Kiel Canal, the recent great extension of German inland waterways, - all are the expression of the vigorous life of that country. Indeed, a visit to the Hamburg docks is a sight never to be forgotten. London is a larger port, but its business is scattered and its apparatus seems to a casual observer old-fashioned but at Hamburg the docks are so continuous, so systematic, so well ordered, so completely fitted with machinery and so filled with vessels from every clime, that it would be difficult to name any place that gives one a more vivid impression of the powers of humanity. In these maritime cities commerce is naturally the foundation of prosperity; but 'hardly less interesting than the facilities afforded commerce is the way in which care and system and forethought have also been applied to the extension and beautifying of these same cities as they become prosperous. Certain general principles underlie both the development of these ports and the similar development of the increased city behind the port. Before making a review in detail of such cities as I visited, I will therefore first sketch these principles. Excerpt from Sovereign and Quasi-Sovereign States: Their Debts to Foreign Countries Among other operations, the Greshams, under the title of the king's exchanger, appear to have been engaged in raising temporary loans at Antwerp, and its allied bourses. As late as 1800 United States dividends were paid at Antwerp, and there is still a small foreign bourse, but supplanted by Brussels. The merchants of the Hanse Towns and Low Countries had already been engaged in these operations in succession to the Italians, when the independence of Holland concentrated them in that country, which likewise became a refuge for the Jews driven out of Spam. The accession of William of Orange to the throne of England, by putting a stop to the naval rivalry, brought England again into its old and close relation with Holland, and on the establishment of the funding system here, the Hollanders took a large part in our consolidated debt, bank stock, and in India stocks. How The Classics Made Shakespeare written by Jonathan Bate and has been published by Princeton University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-04-16 with Literary Criticism categories.

From one of our most eminent and accessible literary critics, a groundbreaking account of how the Greek and Roman classics forged Shakespeare’s imagination Ben Jonson famously accused Shakespeare of having “small Latin and less Greek.” But he was exaggerating. Shakespeare was steeped in the classics. Shaped by his grammar school education in Roman literature, history, and rhetoric, he moved to London, a city that modeled itself on ancient Rome. He worked in a theatrical profession that had inherited the conventions and forms of classical drama, and he read deeply in Ovid, Virgil, and Seneca. In a book of extraordinary range, acclaimed literary critic and biographer Jonathan Bate, one of the world’s leading authorities on Shakespeare, offers groundbreaking insights into how, perhaps more than any other influence, the classics made Shakespeare the writer he became. Revealing in new depth the influence of Cicero and Horace on Shakespeare and finding new links between him and classical traditions, ranging from myths and magic to monuments and politics, Bate offers striking new readings of a wide array of the plays and poems. At the heart of the book is an argument that Shakespeare’s supreme valuation of the force of imagination was honed by the classical tradition and designed as a defense of poetry and theater in a hostile world of emergent Puritanism. Rounded off with a fascinating account of how Shakespeare became our modern classic and has ended up playing much the same role for us as the Greek and Roman classics did for him, How the Classics Made Shakespeare combines stylistic brilliance, accessibility, and scholarship, demonstrating why Jonathan Bate is one of our most eminent and readable literary critics.
