Story of Prince Nila Utama, an adventurous boy and son of the Sultan of Palembang, a Malay kingdom in Southeast Asia, and the Merlion. During his childhood, the young prince met a large and beautiful fish with a head of golden hair, at the bay near the palace, and developed a friendship after offering sweet potatoes to the fish. He would feed the fish daily and watch it swim and dance in the water. The fish suddenly disappeared after seven days and Prince Nila forgot about the short relationship over time. Many years later, as an adult, leading a team of men on an expedition across the ocean, Prince Nilas boat was caught in a typhoon and was mysteriously saved by a sea monster which turnout to be the long lost friend of the prince, the Merlion. The story illustrates the magical relationship between the Merlion and Prince Nila with discovery of Singapura, the Malay term for Lion City. This fairy tale is linked to the founding of ancient Singapore, embracing historical friction with folklore. Merlion is the mascot of Singapore.

The Merlion is the official tourism mascot of Singapore, but The Other Merlion of this anthology introduces the Singapore and Singaporeans that only those who truly know them know. Witty, caustic, naughty, irreverent and full of fun, the poet laughs out loud with his people. It seems odd — or it seems odd to me — that a volume of verse like Gwee Li Sui’s selection of poems and original illustrations, The Other Merlion And Friends, should answer so serious and fundamental a question as “Why do I love poetry?” But it does, and there it is, the truth: fizzy and slightly dizzying, like a secret sip of chilled champagne when you were seven. — Eric Norris. founding editor of the online poetry journal Kin (wearekin.org) and co-host of the Carmine Street Metrics reading series in New York City

Anime, Manga, Sushi, Teriyaki, J-pop, Harajuku fashion ... these are just some of the cultural exports from Japan that the rest of the world have embraced and Singapore is one of Japan's biggest fans. Singaporeans have benefited not just by being a consumer of the many technological advances from Japan (Mitsubishi, Toyota, Honda, Panasonic, and Sony to name a few) but also shared and learnt through economic, political, and intellectual exchanges over the past 50 years since the start of the bilateral ties between these two nations. In 1868, Japan was the first East Asian country that underwent rapid modernization and its development was shared with Singapore from the 1970s onwards as the Japanese growth model was selectively emulated by the Four Asian Tigers (Hong Kong, Singapore, South Korea, and Taiwan). Currently, as the most advanced economies in Southeast and Northeast Asia respectively, Singapore and Japan will continue to be demonstrative case studies of economic development in the region. There are similarities too between these two countries: an aging population, changing geopolitical realities, mature economies, and environmental challenges. The Merlion and Mt. Fuji is not just a historical account of the bilateral cooperation but also includes honest narratives on what it is like being a Singaporean student on exchange in Japan, an anime and manga fan outside of Japan, and some omotenashi appreciation.

"The Merlion and the Ashoka : Singapore-India Strategic and Defence Ties examines the historical evolution and future prospects of the strategic and defence ties between these two nations. India, which considers Singapore to be one of its closest partners in Southeast Asia, has offered Singapore unprecedented access to training facilities, including basing equipment on Indian soil. In turn, Singapore has a close defence dialogue at various levels with India and active military cooperation at the tactical and operational levels. How did the two countries attain such an unprecedented level of defence cooperation and what were the challenges they had to overcome? Combining perspectives from policy-makers, academics and military officers, this book examines different aspects surrounding this question. While exploring the future trajectory of Singapore-India relations, it makes recommendations on how to enhance this strategic partnership"--Provided by publisher.
