The increasing use of advanced composite materials in modem structures of high performance calls for a detailed knowledge of their properties. On the other hand, these materials possessing intense anisotropy, and in some cases non homogeneity, require complicated theories based on homogeneous anisotropic elasticity. Typically, such materials either involve fiber-reinforced composites, which are stacked in layers and form laminates, or particulate composites, containing a second phase in powder form. However, each case must be separately analyzed in terms of the particular characteristics of the materials involved and the process of preparation of the com posite systems. Composite materials consisting of more than one destinct phase are in general use in modem industrial applications. Machine parts, structural components and others may be manufactured from such materials. Epoxy resins are suitable matrices for this class of materials. This is due not only to their general-properties such as linear mechanical behavior, transparency, etc., but also to the possibility of modifying their mechanical and optical properties in a very wide range by using suitable modifiers. Their rheological behavior, as well as their dynamic properties have been extensively investigated.

Discussing every aspect of the fabrication, properties, and use of metal-filled polymers, this unique single-source reference covers the full range of current and potential applications -- from the insulation to the conduction level. Metal-Filled Polymers describes the most recent experimentation in determining the shielding effectiveness of plastics filled with metal ... compares the advantages of metal fillers over conventional nonmetallic fillers ... delineates the concept of interphase (which has recently found importance in predicting the mechanism of crack growth) ... and shows how the geometry and orientation of filler particles affect conduction, strength, and stiffness under various loading conditions. In addition, the book explains how the filler interacts with the matrix to improve composite properties ... and details the theoretical development of both mechanical and thermal properties. Encompassing the entire literature on their respective topics, contributions by eminent researchers focus on the very latest state-of-the-art data and relate findings directly to practical uses in current technology. Metal-Filled Polymers will prove a vital reference for plastics, materials, process, chemical, design, and mechanical engineers and managers in the plastics and metals industries. It will also be a useful resource for manufacturers of conductive composites for EMI shielding, and professional seminars and graduate-level courses in composite materials. Book jacket.

Surfaces And Interfaces In Natural Fibre Reinforced Composites written by Nicolas Le Moigne and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-02-06 with Technology & Engineering categories.

This book is addressed to Master and PhD students as well as researchers from academia and industry. It aims to provide the key definitions to understand the issues related to interface modifications in natural fibre based composites considering the particular supramolecular and micro- structures encountered in plant fibres. A particular emphasis is given to the modification and functionalization strategies of natural fibres and their impact on biocomposites behaviour and properties. Commonly used and newly developed treatment processes are described in view of scaling-up natural fibre treatments for their implementation in industry. Finally, a detailed and comprehensive description of the tools and methodologies developed to investigate and characterize surfaces and interfaces in natural fibre based composites is reviewed and discussed.

One of the most important and exciting areas of composites research is the development of modelling techniques to predict the response of composite materials to different types of stress. Predictive modelling provides the opportunity both to understand better how composites behave in different conditions and to develop materials with enhanced performance for particular industrial applications. Multi-scale modelling of composite material systems summarises the key research in this area and its implications for industry. The book covers modelling approaches ranging from the micron to the metre in scale, and from the single fibre to complete composite structures. Individual chapters discuss a variety of material types from laminates and fibre-reinforced composites to monolithic and sandwich composites. They also analyse a range of types of stress and stress response from fracture and impact to wear and fatigue. Authors also discuss the strengths and weaknesses of particular models. With its distinguished editors and international team of contributors, Multi-scale modelling of composite material systems is a standard reference for both academics and manufacturers in such areas as aerospace, automotive and civil engineering. Extensive coverage of this important and exciting area of composites research Understand how composites behave in different circumstances Compiled by an expert panel of authors and editors

Fibre-reinforced polymer (FRP) composites are increasingly being used in the field of civil engineering, either for the rehabilitation/retrofitting of existing infrastructures or for the construction of new structural elements. However, such applications are still recent and there are still unresolved questions regarding the long-term durability of FRP reinforcements or structural elements under service conditions, and their behaviour under accidental fire events as well. In this chapter, it is proposed to highlight the basic mechanisms involved in the environmental degradation of FRP composites, with a large emphasis on ageing mechanisms of the polymer matrix and their consequences on the mechanical properties. The last section is specifically devoted to the fire behaviour of polymer composites and also recalls existing fire-proofing solutions.
