Soon after Jesus began his public ministry, he called his first 'disciples'. He would teach and train them and then, after his death and resurrection, commission and empower them to go to the nations to make more 'followers'. The risen Jesus is still calling and sending people today. If we heed his call, the result can be just as transformative and exciting as it was for the first disciples. While there are no explicit occurrences of the term 'disciple' outside the Gospels and Acts, with only two further biblical references to 'followers' of Jesus, it is Peter Morden's conviction that we need the entire Bible if we are going to be whole-life disciples. He reflects on Scripture and asks: 'How do we live as committed disciples of Jesus today?' He explores the foundations, resources and practice of discipleship in a range of Old and New Testament texts. The result is a well-rounded and satisfying picture of Christian discipleship, one that is wonderfully attractive as well as deeply challenging. With a fully integrated study guide, suitable for both individuals and groups, The Message of Discipleship will help you to see how the Bible's unified teaching on this vital theme can impact your life today. The Bible Speaks Today series covers every book of the Old and New Testaments, as well as Bible themes that run through the whole of Scripture.

A Comprehensive Guide to Discipleship in the New Testament and Today's World Although the concept of discipleship is an integral part of New Testament teaching, it has largely faded from discussion in both the academy and the local church. To revive and reclaim this teaching for believers in the twenty-first century, editors John Goodrich and Mark Strauss have assembled an expert team of scholars to uncover what every New Testament book teaches about discipleship, providing a comprehensive, biblical picture. In addition, other contributors explore discipleship in the context of the local church, spiritual formation, and the life of the mind. Together, these essays point the way forward for becoming more like Jesus Christ, and helping others do the same, in our personal and corporate lives. "An impressive roster of scholars who have addressed a vital but often neglected topic in both the church and in the academy. . . . Rich with insight, Following Jesus Christ represents a major advance in this essential area of study." --Craig A. Evans, Houston Baptist University "We are treated here to a survey of what discipleship means in the New Testament from experts in the field, and we also see some of the wider dimensions of discipleship in this important work. All those wanting to understand discipleship will find this to be a valuable resource." --Thomas R. Schreiner, The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary

Jesus challenges us to live in him and continue living out the truth so that we claim our allegiance to Christ and live as disciples free from fear and from cultural customs that contradict the gospel message. This project has found that the lack of discipleship training among the Anyuwaa churches has resulted in a lack of understanding of what this ministry entails—teaching and making disciples. In addition, failure to embed elements of the Anyuwaa culture into the discipleship approach, and the persistence of certain elements of Anyuwaa life that run counter to gospel beliefs, has inflamed this crisis. Therefore, this book presents a call for the church to challenge the culture of syncretism and the fear of witchdoctors, to shift its paradigm and begin interpreting the gospel message, utilizing contextual elements but interpreting them through the lens of the gospel, calling people to embrace gospel values within their own cultural context. When we start interpreting strong cultural beliefs and traditions through the truth of the gospel, it is proof that we have come to the best discipleship approach, as we speak the truth of the gospel in the life our church and the hearts of our believers.

What does it mean to be part of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ)? A denomination that intentionally unites Christians who have different ideas about what it means to be Christian is bound to struggle to agree on its core values and beliefs — but respected Disciples Michael Kinnamon and Jan Linn believe unity is possible through reforming worship, relationships, and mission. A timely update of their landmark book, Disciples identifies common ground and continues the conversation started by Stone and Campbell two centuries ago on the American frontier.

This is an age where Christianity is no longer the assumed foundation of culture. Instead, secularism, relativism, and individualism shape how people think, live, and even approach faith. Many within the church have unknowingly embraced a shallow, self-focused spirituality that offers comfort without transformation. How can the church recover a robust, life-giving vision of discipleship in such a world? With a little help from C. S. Lewis, this book offers a way forward. Lewis's insights--rooted in reason, imagination, and community--speak powerfully to this modern crisis, equipping believers to engage both mind and heart. Through cultural analysis and biblical wisdom, this book calls the church to rediscover discipleship as an intellectual, imaginative, and relational pursuit--one that forms resilient, thoughtful, and deeply rooted followers of Christ. Whether picked up by a pastor, church leader, or everyday disciple longing for deeper faith, this book will challenge and inspire readers to cultivate a Christianity that is not only true but beautiful and compelling in an increasingly post-Christian world.

Jesus invites people to a life pulsing with love, purpose, and the promise of unending joy. He calls this narrow-road journey discipleship and says, “Follow me.” The first generations to believe in Jesus knew that following him—and his ways—was an essential part of their faith. They self-identified as disciples. Today many people are disconnected from this journey—or unsure of where to start. Disciple Gate is a thoughtful, practical, and down-to-earth guide to discipleship that can help change that. Through Scripture, story, and personal testimony, readers explore five key moments in this adventure with Jesus. Stepping through seasons of beauty and struggle, they learn to develop a resilient and reproductive faith. They move into life with Jesus and friendship with God. “Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it.” —Jesus (Matt 7:13–14)

Proven Methods for Turning Believers into Disciples What does it mean to grow a "convert" into a "disciple"? And how do we help our people get there? Neil Anderson's Freedom in Christ ministry has been walking individuals through these steps for over a quarter century. Now he turns his attention to pastors and church leaders, teaching them how to help their people resolve personal and spiritual conflicts, including everything from difficult marriages to unrepentant sin to church disputes. Before someone can mature spiritually, they must be established alive and free in Christ through genuine repentance and faith in God. This means churches must resolve their people's conflicts as the first step to discipleship, rather than referring them to professional counselors. We as believers have the answers for mental and emotional problems, and through this ministry of reconciliation true discipleship happens.
