The method of. fractional steps, known familiarly as the method oi splitting, is a remarkable technique, developed by N. N. Yanenko and his collaborators, for solving problems in theoretical mechanics numerically. It is applicable especially to potential problems, problems of elasticity and problems of fluid dynamics. Most of the applications at the present time have been to incompressible flow with free bound aries and to viscous flow at low speeds. The method offers a powerful means of solving the Navier-Stokes equations and the results produced so far cover a range of Reynolds numbers far greater than that attained in earlier methods. Further development of the method should lead to complete numerical solutions of many of the boundary layer and wake problems which at present defy satisfactory treatment. As noted by the author very few applications of the method have yet been made to problems in solid mechanics and prospects for answers both in this field and other areas such as heat transfer are encouraging. As the method is perfected it is likely to supplant traditional relaxation methods and finite element methods, especially with the increase in capability of large scale computers. The literal translation was carried out by T. Cheron with financial support of the Northrop Corporation. The editing of the translation was undertaken in collaboration with N. N. Yanenko and it is a plea sure to acknowledge his patient help and advice in this project. The edited manuscript was typed, for the most part, by Mrs.

This book gathers papers presented at the 13th International Conference on Mesh Methods for Boundary-Value Problems and Applications, which was held in Kazan, Russia, in October 2020. The papers address the following topics: the theory of mesh methods for boundary-value problems in mathematical physics; non-linear mathematical models in mechanics and physics; algorithms for solving variational inequalities; computing science; and educational systems. Given its scope, the book is chiefly intended for students in the fields of mathematical modeling science and engineering. However, it will also benefit scientists and graduate students interested in these fields.

This ENCYCLOPAEDIA OF MATHEMATICS aims to be a reference work for all parts of mathe matics. It is a translation with updates and editorial comments of the Soviet Mathematical Encyclopaedia published by 'Soviet Encyclopaedia Publishing House' in five volumes in 1977-1985. The annotated translation consists of ten volumes including a special index volume. There are three kinds of articles in this ENCYCLOPAEDIA. First of all there are survey-type articles dealing with the various main directions in mathematics (where a rather fine subdivi sion has been used). The main requirement for these articles has been that they should give a reasonably complete up-to-date account of the current state of affairs in these areas and that they should be maximally accessible. On the whole, these articles should be understandable to mathematics students in their first specialization years, to graduates from other mathematical areas and, depending on the specific subject, to specialists in other domains of science, en gineers and teachers of mathematics. These articles treat their material at a fairly general level and aim to give an idea of the kind of problems, techniques and concepts involved in the area in question. They also contain background and motivation rather than precise statements of precise theorems with detailed definitions and technical details on how to carry out proofs and constructions. The second kind of article, of medium length, contains more detailed concrete problems, results and techniques.

This text is an introduction to methods of grid generation technology in scientific computing. Special attention is given to methods developed by the author for the treatment of singularly-perturbed equations, e.g. in modeling high Reynolds number flows. Functionals of conformality, orthogonality, energy and alignment are discussed.

This book focuses on modeling and control of fluid movement and heat transfer in relation to the development and implementation of new highly effective technologies. It develops a new theory of parametric control of film flows and the production of amorphous granules for the creation of new unique materials. The book also explores the new challenges introduced by the influence of vibrations and electromagnetic fields on the flow of various liquids, including metals. The book details the discovery of three new hydrodynamic phenomena, and demonstrates their importance for the creation of unique devices and technologies. It also covers thermohydraulic processes in granular layers, and anomalous heat transfer in complex environments. This book will be of interest to mechanical engineers, electromagnetic experts, metallurgists, material scientists and all science lovers.

Operator splitting (or the fractional steps method) is a very common tool to analyze nonlinear partial differential equations both numerically and analytically. By applying operator splitting to a complicated model one can often split it into simpler problems that can be analyzed separately. In this book one studies operator splitting for a family of nonlinear evolution equations, including hyperbolic conservation laws and degenerate convection-diffusion equations. Common for these equations is the prevalence of rough, or non-smooth, solutions, e.g., shocks. Rigorous analysis is presented, showing that both semi-discrete and fully discrete splitting methods converge. For conservation laws, sharp error estimates are provided and for convection-diffusion equations one discusses a priori and a posteriori correction of entropy errors introduced by the splitting. Numerical methods include finite difference and finite volume methods as well as front tracking. The theory is illustrated by numerous examples. There is a dedicated Web page that provides MATLABR codes for many of the examples. The book is suitable for graduate students and researchers in pure and applied mathematics, physics, and engineering.

One of the current main challenges in the area of scientific computing is the design and implementation of accurate numerical models for complex physical systems which are described by time dependent coupled systems of nonlinear PDEs. This volume integrates the works of experts in computational mathematics and its applications, with a focus on modern algorithms which are at the heart of accurate modeling: adaptive finite element methods, conservative finite difference methods and finite volume methods, and multilevel solution techniques. Fundamental theoretical results are revisited in survey articles and new techniques in numerical analysis are introduced. Applications showcasing the efficiency, reliability and robustness of the algorithms in porous media, structural mechanics and electromagnetism are presented. Researchers and graduate students in numerical analysis and numerical solutions of PDEs and their scientific computing applications will find this book useful.
