Beethoven's middle-period quartets, Opp. 59, 74 and 95, are pieces that engage deeply with the aesthetic ideas of their time. In the first full contextual study of these works, Nancy November celebrates their uniqueness, exploring their reception history and early performance. In detailed analyses, she explores ways in which the quartets have both reflected and shaped the very idea of chamber music and offers a new historical understanding of the works' physical, visual, social and ideological aspects. In the process, November provides a fresh critique of three key paradigms in current Beethoven studies: the focus on his late period; the emphasis on 'heroic' style in discussions of the middle period; and the idea of string quartets as 'pure', 'autonomous' artworks, cut off from social moorings. String Quartets in Beethoven’s Europe is the first detailed study of string quartets in late-eighteenth- and early-nineteenth-century Europe. It brings together the work of nine scholars who explore little-studied aspects of this multi-faceted genre. The second half of the eighteenth century witnessed a flourishing of the string quartet, often represented as a smooth and logical progression from first violin-dominated homophony to a more equal conversation between the four voices. Yet this progression was neither as smooth nor as linear as previously thought, as Mara Parker illustrates in her examination of the string quartet during this period. Looking at a wide variety of string quartets by composers such as Pleyel, Distler and Filtz, in addition to Haydn and Mozart, the book proposes a new way of describing the relationships between the four instruments in different works. Broadly speaking, these relationships follow one of four patterns: the 'lecture', the 'polite conversation', the 'debate', and the 'conversation'. In focusing on these musical discourses, it becomes apparent that each work is the product of its composer's stylistic choices, location, intended performers and intended audience. Instead of evolving in a strict and universal sequence, the string quartet in the latter half of the eighteenth century was a complex genre with composers mixing and matching musical discourses as circumstances and their own creative impulses required.

Beethoven's command of texture is arguably one of the most expressive musical devices within his compositions. The four voices found in the genre of the string quartet provide the composer with a wide palette of textural possibilities. Among these is a frequently overlooked texture: silence. This texture, or lack thereof, is found throughout all sixteen of Beethoven's quartets. The normative placement of silence occurs at boundaries, outlining the formal divisions of a piece. Silence is marked when it occurs elsewhere within a work; in this case, the silence communicates expressive meaning. This paper examines Beethoven's use of such normative and non-normative silences throughout the sonata form movements of his earliest set of six string quartets, Opus 18. Normative silences occur at many different levels, from creating divisions between subphrases to separating entire movements, or even entire quartets within the opus. In contrast, non-normative silences communicate expressive meaning, such as failure of a topic, through their disruption of a melodic or harmonic statement. Although this paper emphasizes the use of silence, it also discusses the use of another extreme texture, that of unison, at significant formal locations. It concludes with a brief glimpse toward the Opus 59 quartets, revealing an evolution of Beethoven's use of extreme textures, concurrent with his stylistic development into the middle- period quartets. This motivates discussion of potential analytical techniques that could capture the element of texture within all of Beethoven's works for quartet, or perhaps the entire string quartet literature.

Pierre Rode (1774–1830) was one of the finest violinists of his day, earning a reputation throughout Europe for his extraordinary and lavish virtuosity. His twenty-four pedagogical caprices and thirteen violin concertos are perhaps his most performed works today, and as such his rich and diverse contribution to string quartet repertoire has largely been forgotten. This edition presents a timeline of Rode’s relationship with the quartet: opus 11, written during the height of the French Revolutionary period, was clearly intended for private, domestic enjoyment; opus 18 provides a flashback to the quatuor concertante style of pre-revolutionary Paris that became synonymous with the likes of Giovanni Battista Viotti; opus 24 and opus posthume reflect the quatuor brillant, a virtuosic, concerto-like style of quartet that became all the rage in European musical centers in the second decade of the nineteenth century.
