This book covers many topics that are crucial to military planning but often receive only passing mention in histories or briefings. Collins, a former Army officer, stresses land geography, but he does not stint oceans, the atmosphere, or interplanetary space. His discussions of urban areas are too brief, given the increasing amount of large-scale violence in cities since the end of World War II.

Excerpt from Outlines of Military Geography The history Of Europe and America for the last fifty years must have shaken the convictions Of even the most obstinate among those who hold that the regeneration Of society is to be accomplished by peace, and by peace alone. N O historian for some generations to come will venture to assert, as did the late Rev. R. Green, that war plays a small part in the real story Of European nations. Wars have Of late been frequent on both sides Of the Atlantic, and have been waged with a destructive fury far beyond the imaginations Of even Napoleonic warriors. Excerpt from Military Geography for Professionals and the Public The dearth of consolidated studies on the discipline of military geography came to John Collins' attention early in his long and distinguished career as a soldier and scholar. Thus he began and kept up an interest in the subject for more than 40 years, amassing voluminous files on the subject. Finally afforded the opportunity to research and write on his avocation at the National Defense University, he spent 2 years as a Visiting Fellow, tapping not only his own wealth of data and experience but a wide variety of well-informed opinions on every facet of military geography. The resultant volume, the culmination of a life-long career, fills a gap in the professional and technical literature. The National Defense University is pleased to have hosted John Collins and to publish his work. No other book, to our knowledge, marries military art with that of the geographer so deftly and completely. The volume seems destined to meet its stated purposes for years to come, namely, to provide a textbook for students, a handbook for military professionals, and an enlightening survey for any appreciative lay reader. Military Geology And Topography written by Herbert E. Gregory and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-09-27 with Science categories.

Excerpt from Military Geology and Topography: A Presentation of Certain Phases of Geology, Geography and Topography for Military Purposes The organization of Students' Army Training Corps in American educational institutions involves a readjustment of courses of instruction. The extent to which the modification of existing courses and the introduction of new courses is desirable has been indicated in a circular transmitted to colleges and universities by the Committee on Education and Special Training of the War Department. This circular includes the statement: "The branches of earth science which contribute most directly to military needs are Military Geology and Geography including Meteorology and Military Mapping," and recommends that some course or courses covering these topics be offered in each institution where geology or geography is taught. This action was taken because the Great War has demonstrated the desirability of more widely diffused knowledge of geology as an aid in conducting military operations and in the solution of economic problems relating to raw materials. In response to many requests for guidance in the presentation of the courses which were called for by the Committee of the War Department, the National Research Council through its Division of Geology and Geography has prepared Military Geology and Topography, Introductory Meteorology and a syllabus on the Geography of Europe as text books for students. In the preparation of Military Geology the following have collaborated: Professor Nevin M. Fenneman, University of Cincinnati; Professor C. P. Berkey, Dr. A. K. Lobcck, and Dr. Frederick Morris, Columbia University; Professor W. W. Atwood and Professor J. B. Woodworth, Harvard University; Professor H. L. Fairchild, University of Rochester; Dr. Willis T. Lee, Dr. T. Wayland Vaughan, O. E. Mcinzcr, and P. S. Smith, United States Geological Survey; Dr. J. E. Spurr, United States Bureau of Mines; Professor H. F. Cleland, Williams College; Professor C. K. Leith and Professor W. J. Mead, University of Wisconsin; Professor W. E. Ford, Professor Herbert E. Gregory, and Dr. George E. Nichols, Yale University. Valuable criticism has been received from M. R. Campbell, N. C. Grover, J. C. Hoyt, B. H. Lane, J. L. Ridgway, and G. M. Wood of the United States Geological Survey, and from others whose duties in connection with the war prevented fuller participation. Excerpt from Topography and Strategy in the War As a student of land forms who is more or less familiar with the broader topographic features of Europe the writer has had a professional as well as a personal interest in the great war. He was particularly anxious to discover how far modern military operations are still affected by the element of terrain; and whether guns which hurl high explosive shells with marvelous accuracy over lofty mountain ridges and across the widest river valleys, aeroplane service which permits better observations than can be secured from the most favorably situated topographic eminences, and modem engineering devices which refuse to be daunted by the deepest stream or steepest cliff, have eliminated the surface features of the land as an important factor in military calculations. Aided by large scale maps showing with precision the topography of the principal battle fronts he has, from the first days of tho war, followed with some care the changes on each front, and has found ample indication that the role played by land forms in plans of campaign and movements of armies is no less important today than in the past. To emphasize this interesting relationship between inanimate Nature and the science of war is one of the objects of this book. Another object, and perhaps the more important, is to place before the reader such a picture of each theater of war as shall enable him to follow with greater ease and livelier interest the movements of our own and our Allies' troops.
