This book is written by Lt. David Vanderport (ret.) His book presents a perspective on one of America's most divisive issues, the relationship between police and the citizens among whom they work. It tells a story of the grinding mental forces of violence, human despair, and two-second life-and-death decisions that lead to more cop suicides every year than death in the line of duty. This is a fiction book comprised of several short stories. The stories are told by Luke, a veteran police officer who has worked in investigations, corrections, and on patrol. The majority of his career has been spent in a city with a population of approximately 300,000 people. Throughout the years the job has taken it's toll on Luke. He has had many ups and downs in his career as well as in his personal life. Some of his issues are of his own doing but they are certainly exacerbated by the mental grind of law-enforcement. This book is filled with action packed stories which can be read and stand on their own; however, the stories are also part of a bigger picture message, mental health in law-enforcement.

As he rose through the ranks of various departments of the Metropolitan Police, Christian Plowman dreamt of being an undercover cop. When he finally achieved his ambition, becoming one an elite group of officers, the reality of covert work turned his life into a nightmare. To catch criminals, Christian bought and sold drugs with taxpayers’ money, been beaten up, arrested at gunpoint and barricaded in a pub by a gang of marauding gypsies – all in a day’s work. At one stage, he was running almost a dozen mobile phones to keep track of his different identities and had so many aliases that he nearly forgot who he was. He put his life on the line for the job but was to find that being the ‘best of the best’ wasn’t all it was cracked up to be. The pressure became so intense that he even contemplated suicide. Crossing the Line is a visceral, gripping account of what it really takes to be an undercover cop. It exposes how the Met conducts its business behind the scenes and reveals the harsh realities of modern covert police work.

The Psychological Effects Of Police Work written by Philip Bonifacio and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1991-10-31 with Political Science categories.

This book adopts a psychodynamic approach to explore the motivations, anxieties, psychological defenses, and resultant behavior of male police officers in urban settings. The author provides a theoretical overview of the psychodynamic approach to human behavior and discusses the concept of ambivalence -- the simultaneous feeling of love and hate -- that exists between the policeman and the public, the police department, his family and friends, and his fellow officers. A core section of the book examines the policeman's love and hatred for his job. Other chapters detail how policemen cope with ambivalence; outline the role of defense mechanisms as coping devices; and explore the issues of police stress, the police personality, myths of the "dumb cop," police corruption, and police brutality. The book concludes with a discussion of the problems of police officer alcohol abuse, suicide, marital difficulties, trauma, and line-of-duty injuries followed by proposals for addressing the pervasive influence of ambivalence on policemen; these proposals are addressed to the public, the police department, the officer's family and friends, fellow police officers, and the individual officer.

Society S Warrior Class written by Marc C. Barry and has been published by Trafford this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2003 with Police categories.

As a police officer in today's society there are a number of issues that we must face each and every day, whether we are on or off duty. The problems we face and must overcome can be very overwhelming at times. We have been described as being a closed society with a warrior mentality and tribal instincts. We live among other cops, associate with other cops and spend much of the normal daily tasks with only other policemen. It's the "us against them" syndrome. When facing death, destruction and the dregs of society in which the public does not have to notice, it wears on you harshly. Over 150 police officers die in the line of duty every year, but more than double that commit suicide. Throughout this book I hope not only to entertain you but also to share my experiences and feelings and show you a different yet very real side of being a police officer, who is out there in the streets every day handling everything imaginable under the sun. As police officers it is instilled in us very early to be fair and impartial, professional and courageous and most important not to show our emotions or feelings. We do this each and every day in every situation we are thrown into. Whether it is a domestic fight, a neighbor's barking dog or a dead child floating in a pool. This is a very difficult lifestyle; emotions run rampant, up and down like a roller coaster and with intensity levels only measurable by a Richter scale. The police officer you most commonly will encounter is the person in uniform, shinny badge, neatly pressed shirt, thick duty belt, and glossed shoes, on patrol on duty. However there is another, your next door neighbor, who eats, drinks, sleeps, cuts his grass on weekends and has a family. Police officers are human just like everybody else. We are selected from society and there are good and bad in everything. Unfortunately a policeman's job is enforcing laws and when you encounter one, he/she is most likely doing their job, which becomes a negative contact for you if you are on the receiving end. Regardless when you call the police for help, we will be there. We do not turn away dangerous situations, we do not back down and we will not run.
