Excerpt from The Mirage of Life To understand the natural object from which the title of this little volume is borrowed, let the reader imagine that, after travelling for hours across a trackless waste of burning sand, amidst the arid deserts of the East, he has, when tormented by thirst, made the discovery that his supply of water has failed. The last muddy drops are eagerly drained, but the sensation of pain is only aggravated by the effort. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from On Life's by-Ways Pierre loti is an impressionist who cares little for psychological analysis. In this work, now offered to English readers, we have pre sented to us a series of word-pictures, showing forth the uniqueness of his style, at once disconnected and fascinating. We see the pictures he describes through a sort of vague, fleeting mirage, though possessed of a degree of charm, a power of evocation exercised by few living writers. Excerpt from The Mirage, Vol. 7 Juniors, and'the preparation of a class-day play by the Seniors. It is in accordance with the former of these customs that the present Junior class issues the current volume of the mirage. It has been the aim of the editors to show college life, to point out the relations of the students to each other, to the University, and to the faculty; and to make plain the faults and merits of the institution as viewed by the student body. The editors have not considered themselves a self-appointed board of correction, whose duty it is to supervise the general administration of the University. Neither have they thought it advisable to ignore those things which the students, generally, consider as detrimental to their best interests. The editors hold that it is the purpose of an annual to bring about a better understanding between the students on the one side and the faculty, trustees and alumni on the other; and to this end they have directed their efforts. Many events of importance to the University mark the period that has intervened since the publication of the '96 mirage. Dr. John, whose merit as a man and scholar is recognized, not only in the University, but throughout this and adjoining states, has seen fit to resign the presidency, and has entered the lecture field. Sorry as the students are to lose the services of Dr. John, yet it is with, if possible, even greater respect and confidence that they turn to his successor, Dr. Gobin. His mild but firm discipline, his enthusiasm in student affairs, his belief in honor, which placed a student's wordabove circumstantial proof, coupled with his strong administration of the University's affairs, have won the love and confidence of every loyal student. Under Dr. Gobin's administration there has been the most complete union of faculty and students that has been seen in the University in a decade. Knowing, as the students do, that they have the confidence of their president and teachers, they have borne in quiet the irksome rules which a Board of Trustees has imposed upon society and social events at De Pauw; rules well fitted to a graded school, but scarcely applicable to men and women with years and ability sufficient to give them a place as thinkers in the ranks of high er education. We regret that these rules, once banished to the realm of the obsolete, along with the Sunday-afternoon lecture and the text book recitation, have been disinterred, and, with the addition of others still more ancient, again thrust upon us. A tour of clocks throughout the centuries—from the sandglass to the telomere—to reveal the physical, biological, and social nature of time What is time? This question has fascinated philosophers, mathematicians, and scientists for thousands of years. Why does time seem to speed up with age? What is its connection with memory, anticipation, and sleep cycles? Award-winning author and mathematician Joseph Mazur provides an engaging exploration of how the understanding of time has evolved throughout human history and offers a compelling new vision, submitting that time lives within us. Our cells, he notes, have a temporal awareness, guided by environmental cues in sync with patterns of social interaction. Readers learn that, as a consequence of time’s personal nature, a forty-eight-hour journey on the Space Shuttle can feel shorter than a six-hour trip on the Soyuz capsule, that the Amondawa of the Amazon do not have ages, and that time speeds up with fever and slows down when we feel in danger. With a narrative punctuated by personal stories of time’s effects on truck drivers, Olympic racers, prisoners, and clockmakers, Mazur’s journey is filled with fascinating insights into how our technologies, our bodies, and our attitudes can change our perceptions. Ultimately, time reveals itself as something that rides on the rhythms of our minds. The Clock Mirage presents an innovative perspective that will force us to rethink our relationship with time, and how best to use it.

Excerpt from The Teaching of Christ: Concerning the Future Life But it may be objected that the texts are from the fourth Gospel, which some say is so mystical and transcendental, so pervaded by the hazy at mosphere of neoplatonism, as to be untrustworthy, because it gives a Christ whose countenance is blurred and whose voice is oblique. But come with me and let us in imagination become a part of that audience which assembled around the sunlit knoll whereon he sat and taught there we shall see and hear him in an atmosphere which is generally con sidered to be pellucid, and where all wiii say that he is heard and seen as he is. No mirage of over wrought fancy lifts the man into the greatness of Deity, and no echoes of transcendental philosophy magnify his voice and distort his sayings. That mount whereon he sat and taught, among the great heights of the earth swells scarcely to a dignity greater than a grassy hillock; but what he taught there has lifted it above the sea of moral darkness until it towers aloft, the sublimest moral height in human history. Over it the very heavens draw kindly near, and as the evening shadows deepen over the fields of amaryllis, the stars stoop from their thrones in cold space, grow friendly, and speak in answering love. Excerpt from Memory's Potlatches Love, like sleep, throws off the brake and life becomes a dream without rule or reason. Just a pleasing, joyful mirage rising out of barren facts and sordid realities. But it is worth while to have lived if only for this. Even if it be like a mirage, nothing real or stable about it, the beauty and joy of love is about all that-makes life endurable, and the heart once penetrated with the ecstasy of love finds, however hard the road, that it is worth while.
