Incorporating extensive research into the black press of the time, the author explores how the public careers and private lives of these two sports figures both define and explain vital national issues from the early 1900s to the late 1940s.

This insightful study offers a fresh perspective on the life and career of champion boxer Joe Louis. The remarkable success and global popularity of the "Brown Bomber" made him a lightning rod for debate over the role and rights of African Americans in the United States. Historian Marcy S. Sacks traces both Louis’s career and the criticism and commentary his fame elicited to reveal the power of sports and popular culture in shaping American social attitudes. Supported by key contemporary documents, Joe Louis: Sports and Race in Twentieth-Century America is both a succinct introduction to a larger-than-life figure and an essential case study of the intersection of popular culture and race in the mid-century United States.

"Brilliant, beautiful, difficult and doomed, Iris Wilkinson (known as the writer Robin Hyde) led a short, tumultuous and incredibly productive life. Here her story is told for the first time in a dramatic and deeply moving narrative. Researched by both authors from 1965 to 1971, it was written in a first draft by Iris Wilkinson's friend, Gloria Rawlinson; since Rawlinson's death in 1995 it has been revised and completed by Derek Challis, Wilkinson's son. It includes appalling accounts of hidden pregnancies, harsh experience as a solo mother, dependence on drugs, intimate acquaintance with sexism and poverty, mental breakdown, and a perilous trip to China in wartime. There are deep friendships and hurtful betrayals. Always there is a dedicated and determined commitment to writing. ..."--Jacket.

Women Of Westminster written by Rachel Reeves and has been published by Bloomsbury Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-03-07 with History categories.

In 1919 Nancy Astor was elected as the Member of Parliament for Plymouth Sutton, becoming the first woman MP to take her seat in the House of Commons. Her achievement was all the more remarkable given that women (and even then only some women) had only been entitled to vote for just over a year. In the past 100 years, a total of 491 women have been elected to Parliament. Yet it was not until 2016 that the total number of women ever elected surpassed the number of male MPs in a single parliament. The achievements of these political pioneers have been remarkable – Britain has now had two female Prime Ministers and women MPs have made significant strides in fighting for gender equality from the earliest suffrage campaigns to Barbara Castle's fight for equal pay to Harriet Harman's recent legislation on the gender pay gap. Yet the stories of so many women MPs have too often been overlooked in political histories. In this book, Rachel Reeves brings forgotten MPs out of the shadows and looks at the many battles fought by the Women of Westminster, from 1919 to 2019.
