Cultural Economies explores the dynamic intersection of material culture and transatlantic formations of "capital" in the long eighteenth century. It brings together two cutting-edge fields of inquiry—Material Studies and Atlantic Studies—into a generative collection of essays that investigate nuanced ways that capital, material culture, and differing transatlantic ideologies intersected. This ambitious, provocative work provides new interpretive critiques and methodological approaches to understanding both the material and the abstract relationships between humans and objects, including the objectification of humans, in the larger current conversation about capitalism and inevitably power, in the Atlantic world. Chronologically bracketed by events in the long-eighteenth century circum-Atlantic, these essays employ material case studies from littoral African states, to abolitionist North America, to Caribbean slavery, to medicinal practice in South America, providing both broad coverage and nuanced interpretation. Love poetry in the Spanish Golden Age redefines the lyric poetry that is located at the centre of Imperial Spanish culture's own self-image and self-definition. This work engages with a broader evaluation of early modern poetics that foregrounds the processes rather than the products of thinking. The locus of the study is the Imperial 'home' space, where love poetry meets early modern empire at the inception of a very conflicted national consciousness, and where the vernacular language, Castilian, emerges in the encounter as a strategic site of national and imperial identity. The political is, therefore, a pervasive presence, teased out where relevant in recognition of the poet's sensitivity to the ideologies within which writing comes into being. But the primary commitment of the book is to lyric poetry, and to poets, individually and intheir dynamic interconnectedness. Moving beyond a re-evaluation of critical responses to four major poets of the period (Garcilaso de la Vega, Herrera, Góngora and Quevedo), this study disengages respectfully with the substantialbody of biographical research that continues to impact upon our understanding of the genre, and renegotiates the Foucauldian concept of the 'epistemic break', often associated with the anti-mimetic impulses of the Baroque. This more flexible model accommodates the multiperspectivism that interrogated Imperial ideology even in the earliest sixteenth-century poetry, and allows for the exploration of new horizons in interpretation. La novela lírica de la vanguardia española, cuyo singular exponente fue Benjamín Jarnés (1888–1948), se vio dominada por la metáfora, como medio de expresión y experimentación. El análisis que propone la autora parte de la elaboración de un modelo de identificación e interpretación, centrado en el corpus de metáforas extraído de dos novelas del escritor aragonés: El profesor inútil (1926) y Teoría del zumbel (1930). La metodología multidisciplinar desarrollada a partir de la teoría conceptual de la metáfora, la poética cognitiva y la teoría de los mundos textuales consigue ofrecer por tanto una imagen compleja del uso metafórico y su disposición dentro de la narración, de la relación entre las expresiones metafóricas y las partes estructurales del discurso novelístico. Según se viene argumentando a lo largo del libro, los principios artísticos de la prosa de Benjamín Jarnés – el integralismo, la gracia y el vitalismo – encuentran eco en el proceso metafórico cuyo principal efecto es la creación de conceptos nuevos de múltiples significados.
