"The Mirror of Laughter presents a theory of humor and laughter by examining their relationship to human behaviors. Kozintsev is especially interested in the relationship between biological and cultural factors that influence behaviors. He divides his work into four chapters, the first of which establishes a theme of the book, focusing on the study of meaning from the perspective of philosophy and psychology, while examining linguistic theories of humor. The second chapter examines biological data regarding laughter and the evolutionary origins of laughter and humor. It demonstrates the author's interest in studying humor objectively by detailing physiological reactions and underlying psychological issues. The third section on play, including linguistic play, distinguishes between orderly and disorderly play. While orderly play has no biological roots and is synonymous with culture, disorderly play is rooted in the pre-human past. The final chapter discusses the conflict between culture and nature and how culture has transformed the original semantics of laughter.Kozintsev seeks to understand the relationship between the biological, cultural, and social origins of humor and, from here, he seeks to create new understanding that only the alliance of several disciplines could provide. All of this is done while the author challenges many popular ideas of humor, such as that humor is inherently related to hostility. Originally written in Russian, this work makes great strides towards its goal, and it does so in an interesting and enlightening way."--Provided by publisher.

The Laughing Mirror was inspired by fond memories of the author’s childhood. He used to go to an amusement park with his family. Standing in front of a funny mirror made them laugh because they saw that everyone looked different. His nephew, who was a little over two years old at the time, got scared when he looked at the mirror closely and started to cry. His mother picked him up and pointed out that the mirror reflected his face, eyes, and mouth, but it could also exaggerate them and make them funny. His nephew calmed down and curiously started to touch the mirror. The Laughing Mirror sends a message to children that they shouldn’t fear any mirrors. And animals, no matter what size or shape, could be our fun friends.

This book is a collection of 100 + short stories that have taken place over the past 65 years. It's a humorous memoir of my life and the interactions I've had with the many people who have laughed with me or at me. It's my written attempt at being a stand-up comedian. It's also a book filled with life lessons and finding the humor in everyday situations. I've modeled it after my first book, Papa's Monkey, which is a collection of humorous short stories about my granddaughter. I've enjoyed every aspect of my life; growing up, adulthood, career challenges, relationships, raising kids and simply laughing at the situations I've found myself in or gotten myself into all along the way. These are the best laughs and the most important lessons reflected in the rearview mirror of my life.

'A masterpiece' (Salman Rushdie) by the author of modern classic The Unbearable Lightness of Being. 'It took the temperature of the age as no other book did. It was the great novel of the end of European Communism: a novel of ideas and eroticism, the surreal and the naturalistic.' Howard Jacobson 'One is torn between profound pleasure in the novel's execution and wonder at the pain that inspired it.' Ian McEwan One freezing day in 1948, Klement Gottwald addresses Prague, wearing his comrade Clementis' fur cap - and Communist Czechoslovakia is born. But after being hanged for treason, Clementis is airbrushed out of propaganda photographs. All that remains is a bare wall, and his cap. So begins an unforgettable voyage through seven narratives, interspersed with luminous meditations on politics, philosophy, music and history. A dissident seeks his first lover - now a Party loyalist - to persuade her to return his romantic letters. A married couple manages their ménage-à-trois as Mother moves in. A clandestine horoscope writer is questioned. An émigré widow struggles to reconstruct memories of her late husband, before finding herself on an island of children. A butcher's wife embarks on an affair with a poetic student. And one man prepares to cross the border . . . What readers are saying: 'Kundera embrace politics, sex, philosophy and history, with a seen-it-all cynicism that nevertheless manages to be fascinating and even uplifting ... It was addictive and fun, sexy and cool, easy to read, and made me feel brighter, switched on, and more alive.' 'You must read this novel. Can't tell you about it, you just have to do it yourself. Its bonkers-brilliant! Phantasmagoric originality like this comes very seldom in a reader's so-sweet life.' 'Kundera's unique writing style comes as a revelation ... This holds a special place in my reading history as the one book that I instantly began re-reading as soon as I finished it.' 'Absolutely enchanted me. It's such an unique novel. It speaks of so many things, from communism and regimes to love and art. For me personally, it is a perfect book.' 'I am not going to spoil the story here, but while the story is not supernatural in any way, it takes on a fantastical flavor, full of mysteries and strange emotions ... It is obvious that Kundera has thought a lot about life, about the meaning of life, and lets the reader in on his secrets.' 'Such a unique writer, Kundera! What a way he has to shine the brightest light on the deepest corners of human psyche.'
