Acute Melancholia and Other Essays deploys spirited and progressive approaches to the study of Christian mysticism and the philosophy of religion. Ideal for novices and experienced scholars alike, the volume makes a forceful case for thinking about religion as both belief and practice, in which traditions marked by change are passed down through generations, laying the groundwork for their own critique. Through a provocative integration of medieval sources and texts by Jacques Derrida, Judith Butler, Talal Asad, and Dipesh Chakrabarty, this book redefines what it means to engage critically with history and those embedded within it.

Seventeen of the "best of the best" fantasy stories—taken from highly acclaimed collections of the '70s—are presented here with biographical notes. A new introduction by the editors places these stories in the context of the literary traditions which fostered them: classical epic, medieval romance, and the folk and literary fair tale.

The essays in this book began simply as tools I incorporated to enhance my understanding of A Course in Miracles and how it blends with the literature I have read and classes and seminars I have taken. Our friends and teachers, Unity minister Patty and her husband Jack Morales introduced my wife, Pati, and I to A Course in Miracles fifteen or so years after we had begun our spiritual journey(s). Each of us are in pursuit of our own respective spiritual paths, in our own individual ways as part of a life-long search for our "purpose" in life; trying to discover who we "truly" are, not the persona we've made up. It just takes some of us longer to realize it. We began with a small core group of people committed to their spiritual paths and it has grown steadily since. As the group expanded in numbers, so did the questions and people began to look to my wife and I for clarification. I realized then, that for myself, I needed to put more effort into my understanding of A Course in Miracles and how it coincided with what I had studied previously, beginning with my lineage, The Science of Mind. I began with notes for comparison, which grew into paragraphs and eventually ended up as the essays in this book. They (the essays) became, for me, a bridge between A Course in Miracles, The Science of Mind, the Gnostic Gospels, and various other religions and teachings. I am a perennial student and will probably be as long as I continue to breathe. My search for understanding, for clarification, may not be insatiable, but I cannot remember a time when I wasn't studying something, so when my wife introduced me to metaphysics, I knew that this was what I would make the topic of all my studying in the future. These essays are the essence of the information I've extracted from this process. My purpose with these essays is not to provide you with what I think to be the "only" or "right" answers to any questions, but as an explanation, understanding or clarification that resonates for me and hopefully for you. We are all unique in our individual perceptions, so my perception of some subjects may not mirror yours, but if one, or some, of my essays bring a light of understanding or help to you, or assist you in seeing an old truth in a new way, then we are both blessed. It is my belief that all gifts are meant to be shared, be it the gift our friendships, our love or our knowledge, because if we keep them to ourselves, they are of no value to anyone. If these essays provide for you a better understanding or just simplify your path, in any manner, please share them, because as St. Francis said, in his beautiful prayer, "It is in the giving that we receive." The Brain Masters Of Vienna written by Lazaros C. Triarhou and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-10-20 with Psychology categories.

The book comprises biographical notes, of about 1000 words each, with a portrait photo, of 90 influential figures of the famous prewar Viennese school of neuropsychiatry, appearing together for the first time in a single volume. The entries focus on the academic lives and scientific contributions of pioneers in the neurological sciences viewed from a modern perspective. These updated profiles are based on substantial new research. The book includes a wide range of people, some famous Nobel laureates, and others less well known, from the era when Vienna was the epicenter of brain research. Despite the tragic circumstances of two World Wars, these pioneers remained resilient, willing to help others with an admirable dignity against adversity that leaves an indelible lesson to the later generations. Some fell victim of the Holocaust. Others overcame the constraints of National Socialism and ultimately settled overseas to nurture their ambitions and pursue their intellectual goals as physicians, researchers, and teachers. The monograph is a useful source for scholars interested in the evolution of ideas in basic neuroscience, clinical neurology, and neuropsychiatry, and the investigators who effected them.

Incisive essays from a master wordsmith Why has Don Juan become so passé of late? What’s the trouble with Ayn Rand? How did the Doge of Venice come to venerate the counterfeit remains of Siddhartha Gautama? Why does the Bentley family’s collection of ancestral relics include a bronzed human thumb? And what, exactly, is the story behind Great Uncle Aloysius, who was born a Quaker but died a pagan? This collection of occasional essays brings us David Bentley Hart at his finest: startlingly clear and deliciously abstruse, coolly wise and burningly witty, fresh and timeless, mystical and concrete — often all at once. Hart’s incisive blend of philosophy, moral theology, and cultural criticism, together with his flair for both the well-told story and the well-turned phrase, is sure to delight.
