Excerpt from The Modern Asphalt Pavement The Subsoil Base - As the foundation of a pavement, of any kind, is placed upon the soil and supported by the latter, it is a matter of vital importance that this latter support should be adequate, and it will only prove adequate if the subsoil is not subject to displacement from settlement or frost and is thoroughly drained. With sandy soils which are well compacted and which, from their nature, are well drained and dry there is no difficulty in the preparation of a satisfactory subgrade. Trenches in such soils, if they occur, can be solidly refilled with the aid of water. If the subgrade is a true sand, as in the neighborhood of seabeaches, it may be necessary, in order to compact the surface, to spread a course of gravel between the sand and the base in order to be able to roll it properly. Excerpt from Natural Rock Asphalts and Bitumens: Their Geology, History, Properties and Industrial Application The Writer takes this Opportunity of acknowledging his intense appreciation of the unstinted permission afforded him by Professor Clifford Richardson, of New York, to make reference to the contents of his well-known work, The Modern Asphalt Pavement in those parts of this present volume devoted to American bitumens. Nor can he conclude without expressing his deep sense of gratitude to Mr. H. W. Brant, of Newcastle-ou Tyne, by whom the matter dealing with the practical application of rock asphalt mastic has been almost entirely written. As the outcome of many years of close attention to the practical side of this industry, his remarks can hardly be otherwise than of the greatest value to the practical user of this material. Excerpt from Asphalt Construction for Pavements and Highways: A Pocketbook for Engineers, Contractors and Inspectors The increase in recent years in the amount of sheet asphalt pavement which is being laid in our cities and the extent of the asphaltic concrete and asphaltic broken stone surfaces which are being constructed on our country highways to resist the destructive action of motor ve hicles, has created a demand for highway engineers, con tractors, and inspectors, who are skilled in this work, far in excess of the supply. The result has been that many have entered these fields who do not realize the im portance of careful attention to details which is necessary to insure complete success in this line of work. With a view to supplying the necessary information in regard to these details to the persons who have been mentioned, this pocket-book has been prepared with the hope that it will do something toward insuring better work in the future than has been done in some cases during recent years by inexperienced contractors and engineers, and supervised by inexperienced inspectors. Its form has been selected in order that it may be readily carried in the coat pocket, for reference on all occasions, something that cannot well be done with a larger book with stiff covers. Pavements And Roads written by E. G. Love and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-07-21 with Technology & Engineering categories.

Excerpt from Pavements and Roads: Their Construction and Maintenance This book is a compilation of articles which have appeared in recent volumes of The Engineering and Building Record, edited with a view of eliminating whatever was of timely or local interest, and arranged by divisions for convenience of use. The science of paving and the need of proper maintenance of pavements is yet comparatively little understood in this country, and the same is true in even greater degree with regard to roads. The editor of the journal named was led to give the matter special attention by seeing what was done in Europe, during his visits there, and finally began an investigation of work on streets and roads in England, France and other countries, the result of which was the gathering of a large and very valuable mass of information in regard to the subject. Of this everything likely to be of practical use in America was printed in The Engineering and Building Record, and is given here in more convenient shape. With it appears a large quantity of matter from American sources, including the prize essays on Road Construction and Maintenance submitted in the competition instituted by the journal named in December, 1889. It will be seen that the great bulk of the book is made up of records of experience and statements of cost in different places. The comments are based on this experience. City Roads And Pavements written by William Pierson Judson and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-07-21 with Technology & Engineering categories.

Excerpt from City Roads and Pavements: Suited to Cities of Moderate Size The local features of the first edition, having served their purpose, have been omitted, and modifications have been made to show the present applications of general methods, some of which have changed since 1894. The most marked change during the past eight years has been in the increased use of crushed stone for roadways of macadam and of telford construction, on the improved streets of villages and cities. A notable instance is that of the city of Greater New York, which contains outside its parks eight hundred miles of crushed stone roads built since 1894. This general increase has resulted in part from the work begun in 1893 by the State of New Jersey, followed in 1894 by Massachusetts, in 1895 by Connecticut and in 1898 by New York. The examples given by the governments of these States in building highways by State aid and outside corporate limits, have led to the building by the municipalities of similar roads within many cities and villages, which have thus wisely profited by the experienced methods of State officials. The results have been an increasing extent of the best kinds of roads of broken stone, and a growing knowledge of the methods and machines by which alone can such roads be built and maintained. These are here described under the heading "Broken Stone Roads," without however differing essentially from the descriptions given in the first edition. The grade of a city street is usually a fixed condition and not a theory, and it is often difficult to decide which is the best pavement for a fixed steep grade in a given climate, or how steep a grade will give good results with a given pavement.
