This book provides the advanced pianist with a modern alternative, or addition to the standard repertoire of exercise books we all know - Hanon, Czerny, Pischna, Brahms. While those are all excellent, much has happened in music since they were written. Material is included to give pianists of any genre (be they Classical, Jazz, Pop, Country, R&B, or anything else) technical and mental exercises that draw from modern harmony and rhythm, while taxing the hands in ways we all need. The Introduction page is included in eight languages: English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Chinese, and Russian, so that most pianists interested in the book will be able to read and understand the overall concepts in the book. All other text in in English. The six sections of the book are Scalar, Contrary Motion, Movable Shapes, Chordal, Diminished Scale, and Jazzy. Exercises are included in each section to give the hands, and the mind challenges that are not found in other books, and reflect both the kinds of things pianists are expected to be able to play today, and the way they might see them notated on the page.Time signatures are expanded from the standard 2/4, 3/4, and 4/4 found in most exercise books to include:7/8, 5/4, 9/8, 6/8, 12/8, 1/4, 7/16, 15/16 and 10/8. "Mixed" meters are also included where exercises change time signatures within the exercise.

(Willis). An extensive 272-page classical piano collection of original piano solos from Baroque, Classical, Romantic, and early 20th Century masters that juxtaposes familiar pieces with lesser known gems. Popular favorites such as Chopin's Minute Waltz, Rachmaninoff's C-sharp minor prelude, the first movement of Bach's Italian Concerto, and the fast and furious 3rd movement of Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata intermingle with seldom heard but equally delightful pieces by Melanie Bonis, Cecile Chaminade, Thomas Wiggins, Rentaro Taki, and Ignacio Cervantes. The brief composer biographies also include a concise description of each piece. This thoughtfully selected publication is organized traditionally by era, and would be beneficial as a reference copy for a piano teacher, as recital or sight-reading music for an advancing piano student, and especially for an amateur or recreational pianist in search of new repertoire for perhaps the superior kind of piano playing: solitary enjoyment! The book features a comb-bound spine so pages will always stay open.

The pieces selected display a great variety of styles including New Music, neoclassicism, modern dances, jazz, blues, pop, rock, musical studies, meditative music, New Age music and more besides: a colourful range of different styles, sometimes blurring the distinction between classical and popular music in 'crossover' pieces that bridge the gap between different musical worlds. The little pieces selected invite us to go on a musical journey of discovery, introducing new experiences using modern sounds and rhythms. All these pieces are suitable for tuition purposes, auditions, examinations and school music competitions – or just as stimulating repertoire for pianists interested in music.
