A compilation of essays written by renowned singing teachers as their testament to their great singing instructor, whose research and interpretations have given birth to a new era of vocal pedagogy known as 'Functional Voice Training.' The essays explain the four basic principles with which he works: the two-register theory, the necessity for pure vowels, the use of rhythm to encourage the muscles to react spontaneously, and the choice of dynamic.

Excerpt from Modern Singing Methods, Their Use and Abuse The most important word in the vocabulary of Modem singing teachers is the word "Method." Every teacher now-a-days has his own peculiar method. Any pupil who has enjoyed six months, or even six hours, of instruction, can talk about his "Method" with as much mysterious self-satisfaction as if he had discovered the Key which was bound to unlock every enigma of vocal training. It is an interesting and, perhaps, amusing fact, that these methods are innumerable. It is also to be noticed that each one is different from every other. True: - All teachers agree, that, out of this crowd of ways for reaching vocal salvation, only one is the true and Catholic path, and all the rest are heresies. When, however, they come to the question of which path is the true one, they differ most emphatically, each teacher going his own way and regarding all others with righteous scorn. The beginner in the art of singing finds a difficulty in picking out the true faith when all the prophets are equally noisy and equally vituperative; so he often spends years seeking for the right teacher, staying with each master only long enough to upset what the previous one had taught him, and, too often, coming at last to the conclusion that his own unaided good sense is the best teacher, and all singing masters are either theorists or humbugs. This conclusion is a lame and impotent one. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. J.F. Botume was perhaps the first published vocal pedagogue to bridge the substantial gap between the “old Italian” and “modern” schools of voice training. Examining the strengths and weaknesses of the various modern “methods” of singing, Botume shows how scientifically-backed understanding and techniques can be integrated with the traditional bel canto method to prepare professional singers for today's unique vocal challenges. In this groundbreaking work, Botume also reveals the core principles upon which the “old Italian school” method rested and how their reintroduction today could revitalize modern singing. “Probably the best summary of the old Italian method offered by any modern teacher is contained in a little booklet by J. Frank Botume, entitled Modern Singing Methods. […] This sums up beautifully the external aspects of the old Italian method, and of modern methods as well.” David Taylor, Psychology of Singing

The practices of singing and teaching singing are inextricable, joined to each other through the necessity of understanding the vocal art and craft. Just as singers must understand the physical functions of voice in order to become musically proficient and artistically mature, teachers too need to have a similar mastery of these ideas - and the ability to explain them to their students - in order to effectively guide their musical and artistic growth. With this singer-instructor relationship in mind, Richard and Ann Alderson's A New Handbook for Singers and Teachers presents a fresh, detailed guide about how to sing and how to teach singing. It systematically explores all aspects of the vocal technique - respiration, phonation, resonance, and articulation - with each chapter containing exercises aimed at applying and teaching these principles. Beyond basic vocal anatomy and singing fundamentals, the handbook also covers such understudied topics as the young voice, the changing voice, and the aging voice, along with helpful chapters for teachers about how to organize vocal lessons and training plans. Thoughtfully and comprehensively crafted by two authors with decades of singing and teaching experience between them, A New Handbook for Singers and Teachers will prove an invaluable resource for singers and teachers at all stages of their vocal and pedagogical careers.

Since the publication of the first edition of A Spectrum of Voices there have been significant advances in voice studies. Prominent members of the new generation of voice teachers join their voices with now-canonized teachings. Asking questions about technology, pedagogy, and stylistic changes within the field, Elizabeth L. Blades brings the wisdom from the past and present to voice students at all levels. A Spectrum of Voices draws from the brilliance and combined experience of an elite group of exemplary voice teachers, presenting interviews from more than twenty-five notable teachers, six of them new to this second edition. Voice teachers offer valuable insight into their teaching philosophies, the types of auxiliary training they recommend to their students, and how they structure their lessons. This second edition also addresses significant technological advances of the past twenty years, especially the impact on vocal performance and pedagogy. A quick-and-handy reference for the studio teacher, this book also serves as a text for vocal pedagogy courses and as an essential supplement for physiology and vocal mechanics, teachers and students of singing, music educators, and musical theater performers.
