The Syrian state is less than 100 years old, born from the wreckage of World War I. Today it stands in ruins, shattered by brutal civil war. How did this happen? How did the lands that are today Syria survive incorporation with the Ottoman Empire in the sixteenth century and the trials and vicissitudes of the Sultan's rule for four centuries, only to collapse into civil war in recent years? Arguably it was the Ottoman period that laid the fragile foundations of a state that had to endure a turbulent twentieth century under French rule, tentative independence, a brutal and corrupt dictatorship and eventual disintegration in the twenty-first. Across a diverse cast of individuals, rich and poor, James Reilly explores these fractious and formative periods of Ottoman, Egyptian and French rule, and the ways that these contributed to the contradictions and failings of the rule of the Assad family; and to a civil war which produced the so-called Islamic State. In charting Syria's history over the last five centuries in their entirety for the first time, Reilly demonstrates the myriad historical, cultural, social, economic and political factors that bind Syrians together, as well as those that have torn them apart. Based on primary sources, recent historiography in English, French and Arabic and more than 30 years' experience living and working in the region, this is the essential book for understanding modern Syria and the Middle East.

This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1844 edition. Excerpt: ... CHAP. XXI. THE CASTLE OF ALEPPO.--ITALIAN ENGINEER. EM1N-EL-FETWA.--MOSQUE-EL-ADELIEH.--PUBLIC LIBRARY. EDUCATION.--THE MUFTI. THE CADT. I Began my visits to the public edifices and institutions, accompanied by an excellent cicerone. The first object to which I turned my attention was the castle, which occupies the centre of the city, being built on a high oval hill, the sides of which are smoothed, rounded, and partly flagged, but in so monotonous a manner that, seen from some points, the castle of Aleppo is as unpicturesque as any that can be imagined: here is no profile of rugged rock, as at the castle of Edinburgh, which, in many other respects, is not unlike that of Aleppo. But what keep or donjon relique of the middle ages of Europe can equal the entrance to the castle of Aleppo? An enormous square tower, beautifully inlaid with a darkcoloured stone, d. Varabesque, rises in stern dignity over the moat, on entering which one sees the symmetrical contortions of two snakes adorning the gateway. But all the Saracenic grandeur leads to nothing. The interior of the castle presents the spectacle of a town in ruins: only two houses were habitable, one occupied by an Aga of the Janissary party and another by the commandant. The ordnance consisted of three old-fashioned twelve-pounders without carriages, and the garrison did not exceed a dozen men. The commandant was very polite, and produced his pipes and coffee, but there was a great deal of whispering between him and an Italian nondescript, who was presented to me as an officer of the corps of military engineers; who, if I might judge from the state of his uniform, had seen a great deal of most arduous service. On wishing the commandant a good morning this Archimedes took me to look at...

"The dispossession and forced migration of nearly 50 per cent of Syria's population has produced the greatest refugee crisis since World War II. This new book places the current displacement within the context of the widespread migrations that have indelibly marked the region throughout the last 150 years. Syria itself has harbored millions from its neighboring lands, and Syrian society has been shaped by these diasporas. Dawn Chatty explores how modern Syria came to be a refuge state, focusing first on the major forced migrations into Syria of Circassians, Armenians, Kurds, Palestinians, and Iraqis. Drawing heavily on individual narratives and stories of integration, adaptation, and compromise, she shows that a local cosmopolitanism came to be seen as intrinsic to Syrian society. She examines the current outflow of people from Syria to neighboring states as individuals and families seek survival with dignity, arguing that though the future remains uncertain, the resilience and strength of Syrian society both displaced internally within Syria and externally across borders bodes well for successful return and reintegration. If there is any hope to be found in the Syrian civil war, it is in this history." -- Publisher's description

In the aftermath of World War I Syria paved a path towards democracy. Initially as part of the French mandate in the Middle East and latterly as an independent republic, Syria put in place the instruments of democratic government that it was hoped would lead to a stable future. This book tells the story of Syria's formative years, using previously-unseen material from the personal papers of Ahmad Sharabati, a prominent nationalist who served in different capacities during colonial times and early independence, first as minister of defense and then as minister of education. His experiences and those of others of his generation tell the story of Syria's short-lived democratic years, up to the union with Egypt as the United Arab Republic between 1958 and 1961.
