This book is a systematic history of one of the oldest problems in the philosophy of space and time: How is the change from one state to its opposite to be described? To my knowledge it is the first comprehensive book providing information about and analysis of texts on this topic throughout the ages. The target audience I envisaged are advanced students and scholars of analytic philosophy and the history of philosophy who are interested in the philosophy of space and time. Authors treated in this book range from Plato, Aristotle, the logicians of the late Middle Ages, Kant, Brentano and Russell to contemporary authors such as Chisholm, Hamblin, Sorabji or Graham Priest, taking into account such theories as interval semantics or paraconsistent logic. For the first time, two main questions about the moment of change are explicitly kept apart: Which (if any) of the opposite states does the moment of change belong to? And does it contain an instantaneous event? The texts are discussed within a clear framework of the main systematic options for describing the moment of change, sometimes using predicate logic extended by newly introduced logical prefixes. The last part contains a new suggestion of how to solve the problem of the moment of change. It is centred around a theory of instantaneous states which provides a new solution to Zeno's Flying Arrow Paradox.

Inspiring fiction from New Zealand author. There is nothing much to say about Happily Ever after. The story that comes before is infinitely more interesting. Sometimes life throws in an element of the random. I try to embrace it. The only mistake at this point would be to try to keep things on their previous course. 28-year-old Ocean has been running her whole life - away from something, searching for something - not even she knows. Arriving in Picton after a long journey and embraced by the dark, dramatic hills of the Marlborough Sounds, she senses the wild Merry-go-round is finally spinning to a stop.

Life is forever changing consequently, individuals must be able to adapt to change not only in their personal life but also to people and society as a whole to meet one’s full actualisation. Throughout the course of the book the author traces events, battles and strategies used to succeed from her early years to adult life. The book focuses on belief, prayer and hope as a means of coping with adversities and how opportunities were created to overcome these. Worthy of noting is the author’s exploration of how the belief and expectation of a teacher through a math paradigm changed her life. Who we are and who we become; can be influenced by self-belief as well as those who believe in us. This book is written with gratefulness and humility and as the author uses HOPE to direct her life, she hopes that everyone who reads this book will find something of interest.

Egypt is at the axis of the Arab world. With the largest population, the largest industrial economy and the longest tradition of modern political activity it has profound influence across the region. But there have been few attempts to understand contemporary Egyptian society, in particular growing internal pressures for change and their implications for the Middle East and the wider world. This book is the first for over 20 years to offer and accessible examination of contemporary issues in Egypt. It offers the reader analyses of its politics, culture and society, including contributions by several Egyptian academics and activists. This unique new book addresses the turmoil created by imposition of neo-liberal economic policies, the increasingly fragile nature of an authoritarian regime, the influence of movements for democratic opening and popular participation, and the impacts of Islamism. The authors argue that Egypt has entered a period of instability during which the 'low-intensity democracy' embraced by the Mubarak regime faces multiple challenges, including demands for radical change. This unique new book assesses the ability of the state to resist the new movements and the latters' capacity to fulfill their aims.

'We need this message more than ever' – Malala Yousafzai Hard-hitting and uplifting true stories of the women around the world facing extreme gender inequality who, when the wider community supports them to challenge the status quo, improve life for the whole of society. A Sunday Times bestselling debut from Melinda Gates, The Moment of Lift is a timely and necessary call to action for women's empowerment. The right to: Spend your own money. Go to school. Earn an income. Access contraceptives. Work outside the home. Walk outside the home. Choose whom to marry. Get a loan. Start a business. Own property. Divorce a husband. See a doctor. Drive a car. All of these rights are denied to women in some parts of the world. 'How can we summon a moment of lift for human beings – and especially for women? Because when you lift up women, you lift up humanity.' In this moving and compelling book, Melinda shares the stories of the inspiring people she’s met during her work and travels around the world and the lessons she’s learned from them. As she writes in the introduction, “That is why I had to write this book – to share the stories of people who have given focus and urgency to my life. I want all of us to see ways we can lift women up where we live.” Melinda’s unforgettable narrative is backed by startling data as she presents the issues that most need our attention – from child marriage to lack of access to contraceptives to gender inequity in the workplace. And, for the first time, she writes about her personal life and the road to equality in her own marriage. Throughout, she shows how there has never been more opportunity to change the world – and ourselves. When we lift others up, they lift us up, too.

"The Moment of Change" is an anthology of feminist speculative poetry. The contributors include many fine poets, among them Ursula K. Le Guin, Delia Sherman, Theodora Goss, Amal El-Mohtar, Vandana Singh, Nisi Shawl, Greer Gilman, Sonya Taaffe, Athena Andreadis, Jo Walton, and Catherynne M. Valente. Editor Rose Lemberg writes in her introduction that Literature of the fantastic allows us to create worlds and visions of society, origins, social justice and identity, but notes that even though we are in the world, our voices are folded into the creases. We speak from memory of stories told sidewise. We speak from pain; is that serious enough? The world has not been welcoming, but what other world is there? ''In these pages, '' Lemberg summarizes, ''you will find works in a variety of genresworks that can be labeled mythic, fantastic, science fictional, historical, surreal, magic realist, and unclassifiable; poems by people of color and white folks; by poets based in the US, Canada, Britain, India, Spain, and the Philippines; by first- and second-generation immigrants; by the able-bodied and the disabled; by straight and queer poets who may identify as women, men, trans, and genderqueer.''
