Elizabeth Drew Stoddard, nee Barstow (1823-1902) was an American poet and novelist. After her marriage to poet Richard Henry Stoddard in 1852 she assisted her husband in his literary work, and contributed stories, poems and essays to the periodicals. She is most widely known today as the author of The Morgesons (1862), her first of three novels. Her other two novels are Two Men (1865) and Temple House (1867). She was also a prolific writer of short stories, children's tales, poems, essays, travel writing, and journalism pieces. One major source of Stoddard's importance to American literature is the historicism of her work, the manner in which her writing embodied and subverted the tension of her present-day culture with the archetypal or received values of the American past. Originally published between 1859 and 1890 in such magazines as Harper's Monthly, Harper's Bazaar, and The Atlantic Monthly, Stoddard's stories prove her to have had one of the most original and unique voices in nineteenth-century American literature. Amongst her other works are Poems (1895) and Lemorne Versus Huell (1863).

The Sport of the Gods is a novel set in the United States in the late nineteenth century. It chronicles the tribulations of the Oakleys, an African American family of four, as they struggle to survive and maintain their integrity in a Southern town and then in New York City. Prejudice, provincialism, and temptation take their tolls, and the justice system stands ever ready to grab the losers. This was Paul Laurence Dunbar’s final novel, published first in the May 1901 issue of Lipincott’s Monthly Magazine. In 1902, Dodd, Mead & Co. published it as a book.

"I'd gladly sell my soul to Satan for a year of freedom," cries impetuous Rosamond Vivian to her callous grandfather. Then, one stormy night, a brooding stranger appears in her remote island home, ready to take Rosamond to her word. Spellbound by the mysterious Philip Tempest, Rosamond is seduced with promises of love and freedom, then spirited away on Tempest's sumptuous yacht. But she soon finds herself trapped in a web of intrigue, cruelty, and deceit. Desperate to escape, she flees to Italy, France, and Germany, from Parisian garret to mental asylum, from convent to chateau, as Tempest stalks every step of the fiery beauty who has become his obsession. A story of dark love and passionate obsession that was considered "too sensational" to be published in the authors lifetime, A Long Fatal Love Chase was written for magazine serialization in 1866, two years before the publication of Little Women. Buried among Louisa May Alcott's papers for more than a century, its publication is a literary landmark—a novel that is bold, timeless, and mesmerizing."

The 6 stories in this collection add a new dimension to the fictional portrayal of New England life. The author's apparently simple, declarative prose moves the reader convincingly into a world where ghosts dwell and evil is real. These stories contain buried comments on the life of women at the turn of the century. By the author of Pembroke.
