About the Book Young and full of dreams, Hanna Blaser made her way from Switzerland to the United States to work as an au pair in the early sixties. As she began traveling and moving around the States, she met her first husband and they had their son, Luke. A smart kid but lacking in the structure he needed for a child with ADHD and bipolar disorder in the seventies and eighties, he eventually turned to a life of self-medication through drugs and alcohol. Hanna Blaser’s The Mortal Wound is a heart-wrenching tale of the pain and trauma associated with a loved one’s, especially a child’s, addiction. From the cycle of detoxing and the heartbreak of relapsing, Blaser’s journey as a mother of a son with an addiction has been a whirlwind of tough love and hard decisions at every corner. But she hopes her story, although tragic, can encourage others to learn from her story and to not give up on your loved one, to hopefully save a life. About the Author Hanna Blaser is a retired clinical social worker. She is currently involved in a two-year medical trial for macular degeneration. She hopes the trial can become FDA approved so others like her do not need a monthly injection to keep their sight. Blaser enjoys reading, games, gardening, knitting, cooking, movies, and music.

Mortal Wound is multidisciplinary artist James Gardella's debut collection of forty poems that captures the magic of mania. This ambitious chapbook borrows from quatrains: each untitled poem is eight words long, four lines of two words each, with no repeating words. Centered on the page, surrounded by negative space, the poems are terse, direct, and imaginative in tone and design. Mortal Wound is inspired by the haunting yet illuminating experience of walking through cemeteries to honor our late ancestors and meditate on their gravestones' words, symbols, and meanings. Gardella grapples with his own psychology, reflecting on timeless themes including life and death; spirituality and religion; and love and beauty to offer a profound message of hope to his readers.

A biological anthropologist uses the human skeleton to examine the history of violence from the Mesolithic era to the nineteenth century. Human beings have a violent past. Physical hostilities between people are at least as old as humanity and the roots of such behaviour go very deep. Earlier studies have been based on a range of sources including written documents, as well as archaeological evidence in the form of weapons, armour and defences. However, each of these is fraught with problems and there is in fact only one form of evidence that can both directly testify to past violence and which has also been present throughout the whole human story –the remains of past people themselves. This book brings together a wealth of recently recognised evidence from preserved human skeletons to investigate a range of questions regarding the ways human beings have used violence to achieve their aims, in a single volume presenting this continuous thread of unbroken evidence from the early Stone Age to the 19th century. Who engaged in violence? Who were the victims? How have styles and objectives of conflict changed over time? How old is war and why did it appear when it did? All these and further questions are addressed in this cutting-edge book, the first of its kind to be aimed at the general reader and written for an audience that may not be familiar with what we can learn from the human skeleton about our shared past and the changing face of human conflict. Praise for Mortal Wounds “This well researched, well written book is recommended for archaeologists, military historians and all those interested in the development of human kind.” —Minerva “An excellent introduction to the bioarchaeology of interpersonal conflict. [This book] will likely be of greatest interest to bioarchaeologists, but the thorough explanations and descriptions of concepts and methods make the book accessible to a general, non-specialist audience” —Classical Journal “This engaging, well-written, illustrated book introduces readers to a relatively new field within anthropology called “conflict archaeology.” . . . The book is aimed at general readers, and Smith avoids jargon whenever possible, clearly defining specialized terms when necessary. The book should also be worthwhile reading for academics with related interests but who lack expertise in skeletal analysis. Summing Up: Highly recommended. All public and academic levels/libraries.” —Choice

What makes for a good death? In Mortally Wounded, a best-seller in Ireland where it was first published, Dr. Michael Kearney reflects upon his experiences working with the dying and shows us that it is possible to learn to die well, overcoming our fears and soul pain and accepting death as an integral part of life.Believing that the root of the pain we face when dying is often a persona and cultural disconnection from soul, Dr. Kearney advocates a personal quest inward-and downward-the re-engage with this deepest part of our being. He shows how psychological techniques, such as dream analysis and visualization exercises, combined with mythological insights, can help us on this journey. He finds in the Greek myth of the wounded centaur, Chiron, a metaphor for this process-it is only after descending to the underworld for nine days and nights that Chiron finds relief from his pain and suffering and discovers a path that reaches to the heavens.Careful attention to our spiritual health, Kearney urges, is an essential complement to physical or outer care. Inner or "depth" work can, he believes, enables us to find our "own way through the prison of soul pain to a place of greater wholeness, a new depth of living, and a falling away from fear.
