Everywhere you look there's a motivational quote to greet you. Pursue your passion! Nothing is impossible! Happiness is a journey, not a destination! But what if there is actually scant evidence to back up these shimmering proclamations? What if positive thinking does not, in fact, lead to positive life outcomes? What if life is too short to not have regrets? In other words, what if many of our most cherished motivational platitudes simply aren't true? The Motivation Hoax offers sense in place of the sparkling nonsense that permeates the inspiration industry. It exposes the unrealistic clichÃf©s and misleading mantras that frequently just make you feel bad, replacing them with evidence-based insights that are no less motivating, but are credible, reliable and, most importantly, scientifically tested. A reality check like no other, The Motivation Hoax is among the most refreshing, liberating and surprisingly comforting books you'll read this year.

Everywhere you look – on posters, in offices, on social media – there’s a motivational quote to greet you. Dreams can come true! Happiness is a journey! Think positive! You can do anything! But how many of these are accurate? How many are wise? And which of them are based on evidence you can actually trust? The answer is depressing: not many at all. The Motivation Hoax exposes and unravels the nonsense that permeates the inspiration industry, and in its place offers a suite of tools and insights that are reliable, credible and, most importantly, tested. Who will benefit from this book? The Motivation Hoax is for you if: You’re a leader who abhors clichés and vacuous platitudes. You’re an employee who desires a realistic guide to workplace success. You find yourself rolling your eyes when you see or hear yet another nauseating motivational quote. You value science over rhetoric, no matter how eloquently worded. Misanthropology written by Sean M. Rafferty and has been published by Taylor & Francis this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-10-13 with Social Science categories.

Misanthropology: Science, Pseudoscience, and the Study of Humanity introduces students to key concepts in critical thinking across the four core branches of anthropology: cultural, linguistic, biological, and archaeological. It combines a critical analysis of anthropology as a field with current concepts in scientific skepticism. By deconstructing a range of global case studies in which anthropological research runs aground, the book teaches students to distinguish between legitimate science and pseudoscience. It covers key concepts in critical thinking and rigorous research, such as cognitive biases and logical fallacies, data collection and consensus, probabilistic thinking, as well as political, nationalist, racist biases. Students learn not only how to apply these concepts to anthropological research and fieldwork, but also to their consumption of everyday information. This book will appeal to anthropology students and will be particularly useful for instructors of introductory anthropology courses, as well as instructors of courses across the humanities and social sciences focused on inculcating critical thinking skills.

The Canadian Oxford Dictionary defines hoax as a "humorous or malicious deception," and hex as "a magic spell." These stories of hoaxes and hexes illustrate our curious desire to believe in the impossible and explain the inexplicable. Portrayed here are accomplished hoaxers and swindlers, including the flamboyant 19th-century financier known as Lord Gordon-Gordon; David Walsh, author of the horrendous Bre-X gold-mine hoax of the 1990s; and the eccentric Josef Papp, who claimed to have crossed the Atlantic in a homemade submarine. The persistent power of hexes is recorded in stories of cursed places--including a strange haunting in the Cypress Hills and a deadly Lake Superior lighthouse--and weird coincidences, such as the legendary Hollywood hex on Oscar-winning actresses. Whether humorous or malicious, real or imagined, hoaxes or hexes have entertained and ensnared us throughout history.

Motivation. What a fun word. People love to toss it around. All the freaking time.If you perform a Google search for "how to increase motivation" there are approximately 174,000,000 results. As I'm typing these words there are 34,405 books on Amazon about motivation. Which is a lot. In case you were wondering. In fact, there are so many books about motivation that Amazon created an entire new bestseller list just for books about motivation. And the #1 book on that list sells roughly 800 copies a day, and earns more than two million dollars a year. Just as an ebook. And several more million as a hardcover and audiobook.I'm telling you. Motivation is a big deal to a lot of people.I personally get emails all the time from parents asking me how they can motivate their kid to get off his butt and actually do something with his life.Motivation, motivation, motivation. Most people think it's the key to success. Most people figure that if they could simply find a way to increase their motivation, all of their problems would magically disappear and life would become a dandy daydream. But can I let you in on a little secret?Motivation is a scam.A complete and utter scam.Motivation doesn't work long-term. It's finite. It's a short-term solution to a long-term problem. And it almost always fails.I'm writing this chapter on December 29th. Which means that in 3 days just about everyone on planet Earth is going to set a New Year's Resolution.Everyone out there wants to lose weight or make more money or cut down on alcohol or spend more time with their family or spend less time with Facebook. Right? Everyone wants to make the new year better than the year before it.But as we all know, the vast majority of people will have fallen off their New Year's Resolution by the 2nd week in February. It's very rare to find someone that actually sticks with their Resolution through the entire year. Why is this? Why do people suck so bad at trying not to suck?In a word: motivation. At the beginning of the year everyone is motivated. They're pumped up to go out and tackle all of the challenges that might arise, and make this new year better than any other. They're motivated to do their best. But after a month or so that motivation runs out. It just disappears into thin air. Because it's a finite resource, and it doesn't last forever. And when it's gone...you have no reason to keep going. So you just give up.I'm sure you've seen this in your own life time and time again. You'll feel super pumped up and motivated to do something. Start a project, set a goal, take up a new hobby. Whatever. And you'll go all out and do that thing nonstop for a couple of days. But then your supply of motivation for that activity runs out. And so you just stop. You give up completely and never return to finish what you started. No one has ever become successful at anything based on motivation alone. Motivation can be a really useful tool, but it's not enough to push you all the way to the finish line. In fact, if you use it like a crutch in the way that most people do, it will handicap you and prevent you from EVER being successful. But if motivation doesn't work...what does? You ready for this?Drumroll please.Willpower.Ba-du-bum...CRASH.(That's my fantastic impression of playing the drums. You're welcome.)You might be asking "what is willpower"?Well, willpower is simply the drive to do hard things. It's emotional oomph. Energetic determination. Now, I know that might not sound like the sexiest self-help technique of all time. I mean, really? Willpower? Yuck. What's so unique and incredible about that? But I'm telling you: willpower is amazing. If you have enough willpower you can accomplish literally anything. Willpower can take you places that motivation never could in a million years.

How genres emerge and evolve on the Internet has become one of the central questions in studies of computer-mediated communication (CMC). This book addresses the issue of genrefication by giving an in-depth analysis of email hoaxes as a candidate for digital genre status. Email hoaxes are deceptive messages that spread in digital social networks; they are a fascinating object for discourse linguistics as they exemplify a major pragmatic tendency in CMC, namely deceptivity and a lowering of sincerity standards. This study examines formal and functional aspects of email hoaxes and provides ample evidence both from a systematized corpus and in situ data collected online. Besides a structural and microlinguistic analysis, it identifies key issues such as pragmatic duality, narrativity and textual variation and change in email hoaxes. In conclusion, a digital genre model is outlined that bridges both the old/new and the formal/functional gaps and may be applied to many other digital genre ecologies.

The Motivation Myth written by Jeff Haden and has been published by Penguin this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-01-09 with Business & Economics categories.

From Inc.com's most popular columnist, a counterintuitive--but highly practical--guide to finding and maintaining the motivation to achieve great things. It's comforting to imagine that superstars in their fields were just born better equipped than the rest of us. When a co-worker loses 20 pounds, or a friend runs a marathon while completing a huge project at work, we assume they have more grit, more willpower, more innate talent, and above all, more motivation to see their goals through. But that's not at actually true, as popular Inc.com columnist Jeff Haden proves. "Motivation" as we know it is a myth. Motivation isn't the special sauce that we require at the beginning of any major change. In fact, motivation is a result of process, not a cause. Understanding this will change the way you approach any obstacle or big goal. Haden shows us how to reframe our thinking about the relationship of motivation to success. He meets us at our level--at the beginning of any big goal we have for our lives, a little anxious and unsure about our way forward, a little burned by self help books and strategies that have failed us in the past—and offers practical advice that anyone can use to stop stalling and start working on those dreams. Haden takes the mystery out of accomplishment, proving that success isn't about spiritual awakening or a lightning bolt of inspiration --as Tony Robbins and adherents of The Secret believe--but instead, about clear and repeatable processes. Using his own advice, Haden has consistently drawn 2 million readers a month to his posts, completed a 107-mile long mountain bike race, and lost 10 pounds in a month. Success isn't for the uniquely-qualified; it's possible for any person who understands the true nature of motivation. Jeff Haden can help you transcend average and make lasting positive change in your life.

The Curious Person S Guide To Fighting Fake News written by David G. McAfee and has been published by Pitchstone Publishing (US&CA) this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-10-12 with Social Science categories.

With each passing day the potential reach of a single false news story—and its ability to negatively impact all of us—grows in both size and scope. Although politicians, activists, and ordinary citizens regularly complain about deceptive or biased news reports, they tend to define fake news as anything with which they happen to disagree, thus compounding the problem even further. Seeking to bring some much-needed clarity to the subject, journalist David G. McAfee documents the myriad definitions of "fake news" and its various incarnations throughout history, from ideologically motivated disinformation operations to commercially motivated misinformation campaigns. Demonstrating that we are all culpable in the creation of the current pandemic, he presents a number of practical and actionable suggestions for combating it. In the end, however, he argues that each of us, no matter our political bent, have an important role to play in curbing the insidious spread and most dangerous effects of fake news.
