Born in a small coal mining town in 1931, Frederic Marsh Civish, Jr. lived through things most people nowadays would consider history. For example, he is older than the Empire State Building, the Golden Gate Bridge, and Hoover Dam. On Pearl Harbor Day, he was duck hunting with a 12-gage shotgun. In the 21st century, he was a substitute teacher, author of the historical novel The Sunnyside War about the 1922 United Mineworkers Strike. He also wrote “a truly workable diet book” titled Losing Weight for Life: Eating What you Like on the RMR Diet. He is still extremely active and involved in numerous social and charitable activities. Growing up in Utah, “I felt the state and everybody in it could be described with two words: I called the state ‘sticks and people hicks.’ After joining the Navy during the Korean War and living in several California cities, in 1962, for various reasons, I decided to move back to the sticks and become one of them ‘thar’ hicks. I lived in Salt Lake until 2012, when I got tired of the traffic and the smog, and moved north to Ogden, Utah, where my current home is about a quarter of a mile from huge mountains reminiscent of those where I was born and raised.”

Located between the Penobscot, Wilkes-Barre, and Nescopeck Mountains of northeastern Pennsylvania at the headwaters of the Wapwallopen Creek, Mountain Top consists of Wright, Fairview, Dorrance, Slocum, and Rice Townships as well as Nuangola Borough. Settlers entering its rugged forests in the 18th century established lumber camps, sawmills, and farms. Blacksmith shops and taverns opened near rural crossroads at Dorrance, Slocum, and Albert's Corners. During the 19th century, transportation networks moving anthracite from nearby mines to distant markets traversed the region. The neighborhoods of Solomon's Gap and Penobscot grew along with the Lehigh & Susquehanna, Lehigh Valley, and New Jersey Central Railroads, while resorts at Glen Summit and Lake Nuangola attracted seasonal visitors. Access to Mountain Top by motor vehicle improved throughout the 20th century. The construction of Route 309 and Interstates 80 and 81 paved the way for commercial and residential development, including the Crestwood Industrial Park. Today, Mountain Top is a growing suburban community of nearly 17,000 people who enjoy and support its parks, churches, businesses, and schools.

In 1849, Virginia began a bold railroad expansion toward the Ohio River and its lucrative trade connections. The project's plan covered 423 miles and called for piercing two mountain chains with three railroads. The Blue Ridge Railroad was the shortest of these but crossed the most mountainous terrain. At times, hired slaves, who prepared the tracks, and Irish immigrants, who blasted the tunnels, faced challenges that seemed almost insurmountable. Many were killed by explosions and falling rock. Those deaths often resulted in labor strikes. The unrest slowed progress and haunted chief engineer Claudius Crozet for seven years. In this first full-length history of the Blue Ridge Railroad, award-winning author Mary E. Lyons uses a wealth of historical documents to describe construction on what Crozet called "dangerous ground."
