The Multi-Skilled Designer presents and analyzes different approaches to contemporary architectural design and interprets them through the theory of multiple intelligences. The book establishes a systematic framework that uses the lens of cognitive psychology and developments in psychometric and brain research to analyze the unique cognitive thought processes of architectural designers and compiles design projects that could serve as a pedagogical companion for the reader. The book is aimed at design practitioners and students interested in examining their own thinking styles as well as those involved in design cognition research.

The general purpose of this study was to deepen and broaden thinking about the nature and implications of possible Multi-Skilied Soldier (MSS) Concept implementation. Specific objectives were (1) to determine applicability of the MSS to the Stryker Brigade Combat Team (SBCT), as it might be implemented in Initial Entry Training (IET) and (2) to prototype MSS Concept implementation for the SBCT, considering possible implementation for the Future Force. The report also defines the MSS; shows how the MSS Concept might fit conceptually within a larger Army training, education, and professional development model for Soldiers of all ranks; offers an MSS Program design for IET; and crafts actionable recommendations regarding general MSS implementation for IET. The study concludes that the MSS Concept is fully applicable to the SBCT, as well as the so-called Current Force. It also concludes that MSS implementation would have a significant salutary effect on unit training readiness postures across the force. This study relied heavily on insights and analysis gained from interviews with groups of senior NCOs and officers within the 3rd Brigade (SBCT), 2nd Infantry Division, Ft. Lewis, WA, during September 2002.

This book publishes the reviewed and revised texts of the papers delivered at the Tenth International Conference on Design Computing – DCC’24 held at Concordia University in Montreal, Canada. These papers the range of design research from artificial intelligence, cognitive science, cognitive neuroscience and computational theories applies to design. The papers are published in two volumes and are grouped under the following headings: Design Processes, Design Creativity, Design Cognition, Shape and Form, Design Technology, AI and Design, Design and Brain Behaviors, and Design AI Applications. These two volumes form an archival record of then current cutting-edge research studying design scientifically. They demonstrate the range of approaches being used to characterize designing as a process. At the same time they show that there is a commonality in designing independent of design discipline. These volumes will be of interest to design researchers in both academia and industry and to anyone who needs to obtain a better understanding of designing.

Teaching And Designing In Detroit written by Stephen Vogel and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-11-18 with Architecture categories.

This book provides a compelling and insightful portrait of ten female architects, artists, and designers who explored unique approaches to teaching, practice, and research in the postindustrial city of Detroit. These women explored the phenomenon of a new “ecological urbanism” through their own work in art, architecture, design, planning, landscape architecture, and installation as well as the work of their students. Teaching and Designing in Detroit provides an eighteen-year snapshot of this work, how it affected the women’s practice, how they influenced student relationships to design and community development, and how their visions are now being carried out in Detroit. This book is organized into sections that group stories according to their focus on practice, pedagogy, and community engagement. Included in the book is a foreword by Leslie Kanes Weisman, the only female architecture professor at the University of Detroit Mercy in the 1970s, and an afterword by Sharon Egretta Sutton reflecting on how working and practicing in Detroit foreshadowed the future vision now being carried out in the rebounding city of Detroit. An intriguing read for students and professionals, this book will illustrate how these lessons learned can be applied by universities and communities in other postindustrial cities.

Ethical Design Intelligence written by Philippe d'Anjou and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-02-14 with Architecture categories.

Ethical Design Intelligence: The Virtuous Designer explores the deep significance of philosophy and ethics to the practice of design. It offers designers from disciplines such as architecture, urban design, planning, landscape, interior, and industrial design an alternative ethical framework in which to expand their thinking about their practice. Arguing that design today is primarily an agency driven by the momentum of globalization, embedded in economy, materialism, and utility, the book reconceptualizes the notion of virtue in design practice. Across chapters covering topics such as virtuous character, creative agency, and unsustainable practices, the book scrutinizes design through a philosophical lens. d’Anjou dissects articulations from different philosophical thinkers from antiquity to contemporary time to reveal that ethics is fundamental to everything affected by design. Countering well-established modes of postmodern relativism in design, which has led to “defuturing” and “unsustainability,” ethical realism is presented as an alternative solution. This book is written for designers, educators, researchers, and students.

Theorizing Built Form And Culture written by Kapila D. Silva and has been published by Taylor & Francis this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2024-03-08 with Architecture categories.

In this collection of essays, Theorizing Built Form and Culture: The Legacy of Amos Rapoport – a felicitation volume to celebrate the significance of Professor Amos Rapoport's lifelong scholarship – scholars from around the world discuss the analytical relevance, expansion, and continuing application of these contributions in developing an advanced understanding of mutual relationships between people and built environments across cultures. Professor Amos Rapoport has espoused an intellectual and theoretical legacy on environmental design scholarship that explains how cultural factors play a significant role in the ways people create and use environments as well as the way environments, in turn, influence people’s behavior. This volume presents a hitherto-not-seen, unique, and singular work that simultaneously articulates a cohesive framework of Rapoport’s architectural theories and demonstrates how that theoretical approach be used in architectural inquiry, education, and practice across environmental scales, types, and cultural contexts. It also acknowledges, for the very first time, how this theoretical legacy has pioneered the decolonizing of the Eurocentric approaches to architectural inquiry and has thus privileged an inclusive, cross-cultural perspective that laid the groundwork to understand and analyze non-Western design traditions. The book thus reflects a wide range of cross-cultural and cross-contextual range to which Professor Rapoport’s theories apply, a general notion of theoretical validity he always advocated for in his own writings. The volume is a paramount source for scholars and students of architecture who are interested in understanding how culture mediates the creation, use, and preservation of the built environment.

Design Management written by David Hands and has been published by Kogan Page Publishers this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-11-03 with Design categories.

Design Management is the essential handbook to all things design. As a discipline, design management is continually in motion; changing, responding and adapting to the dynamics of social and business transformation. As a business function, it combines project management, design, strategy and supply chain techniques to enable the creation of more effectively designed products, services, communications and brands. As such, it is relevant to a very broad range of industries and sectors, and Design Management recognizes this by structuring content around four key universal perspectives: values, horizons, visions, and futures. These perspectives give an overview of the development, key issues and future direction of design management. Meticulously researched, Design Management goes beyond individual project-level implementation to explore design strategy at both organizational and macro levels. By showcasing its impact all the way up to industrial and national application, students will gain a deep understanding of the nuances, scope and scalability of design. Filled with vibrant case studies and guest perspectives from a spectrum of industry leaders and policy makers, this book is an invaluable real-world commentary on design's role as a key asset in organiZational activity. The book's engaging and accessible style provides students and practitioners with everything needed to foster a climate of creative engagement. Online resources include a valuable toolkit of PowerPoint slides, review questions, project questions, activity worksheets and further reading.
