This is the true story about a respected businessman, Henry Wainwright, who had everything he needed in 1871. A wife and 5 children and a delightful London townhouse home. But in 1872, Henry fell in love with attractive Harriet Lane. He then embarked on a risky affair with Harriet coupled with gambling and flirtations with ballet girls from the Pavilion Theatre, Whitechapel. Harriet produced two children as Henry sets her up in lodgings with an allowance as they pretended to be husband & wife. Henry’s finances then tumbled out of control and bankruptcy loomed. What happened next was a scandalous conspiracy which ended in murder, and a plot which fooled everyone into thinking that the victim had gone abroad. Henry Wainwright got away with murder for a year before a schoolboy error led to his capture. The case ruined the lives of three families. This fast-moving story will transport to a world of polite, East End society in the mid 1870’s of Victorian London, but with a seedy underbelly. 14 years before the infamous Jack the Ripper Murders, it was the original, ‘Whitechapel Mystery’ which was probably the most sensational criminal case of the 1870’s and involves a chase through the city and across London Bridge. This story also involves Henry’s younger brother Thomas who was also involved in the conspiracy to murder Harriet Lane. The case paints a vivid picture of Victorian London. The police investigation and Old Bailey trial is revealed in glorious detail. It’s a story of love, weakness and devious, desperate liars. It’s a rollickingly good Victorian scandal. Written in an entertaining style, the book contains a huge amount of fascinating detail, not only of the murder but about the lives of so many of the characters in the story. It’s a huge slice of London life, 1875 style. This story deserves to be much better known and will be fascinating to anyone interested in Whitechapel or Victorian Crime.

When discussing unsolved murders of women in late Victorian London, most people think of the depredations of Jack the Ripper, the Whitechapel Murderer, whose sanguineous exploits have spawned the creation of a small library of books. But Jack the Ripper was just one of a string of phantom murderers whose unsolved slayings outraged late Victorian Britain. The mysterious Great Coram Street, Burton Crescent and Euston Square murders were talked about with bated breath, and the northern part of Bloomsbury got the unflattering nickname of the 'murder neighbourhood' for its profusion of unsolved mysteries. Marvel at the convoluted Kingswood Mystery, littered with fake names and mistaken identities; be puzzled by the blackmail and secret marriage in the Cannon Street Murder; and shudder at the vicious yet silent killing in St Giles that took place in a crowded house in the dead of night. This book is the first to resurrect these unsolved Victorian murder mysteries, and to highlight the ghoulish handiwork of the Rivals of the Ripper: the spectral killers of gas-lit London.

East End Murders written by Neil R Storey and has been published by The History Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-02-29 with True Crime categories.

Neil R. Storey has drawn on a vast array of original sources - among them witness statements, coroners' reports and court records - to produce a revealing insight into the East End's darkest moments. As well as the murders of Jack the Ripper, perhaps the most infamous in history, he looks at nine other cases in detail: the still mysterious Ratcliffe Highway Murders of 1811; Henry Wainwright, who dismembered his mistress and rolled up her remains in a carpet in 1874; Israel Lipski, whose name became a term of derision and abuse against Jews in East London for years following his conviction for the murder of a young woman in 1887; the unsolved murder of Frances Coles in 1891; the Whitechapel High Street Newspaper Shop Murder in 1904; the Houndsditch Murders and the Siege of Sidney Street in 1910, in which a robbery potted by Russian anarchists went badly wrong; the throat-cutting William Cronin in 1925; the Bow Road Cinema Murder in 1934; and finally the shooting of George Cornell by Ronnie Kray at the Blind Begger pub in 1966. East End Murders is a unique re-examination of the darker side of the capital's past.

In the autumn of 1888 a series of notorious murders were perpetrated by an enigmatic killer known as 'Jack the Ripper' who terrified the Whitechapel district of East London. Six women were murdered in a four month period with the killings ending as suddenly as they began with an unknown motive. 'Whitechapel' tells the story of these killings and the events that surrounded them through the eyes of Robert Ford a young fictional Victorian constable and his interaction with the detectives and victims involved in the case. Subsequently this provides a hypothetical but plausible explanation of how and why the murders were perpetrated; how and why 'Jack the Ripper' was never caught and how members of the British establishment perverted the course of justice for their own selfish ends. It is also a story of love, duty, romance, tragedy and ultimately revenge that spans the late 19th Century in America, London and Paris through to the early 20th Century returning to St Louis, Missouri. 'Whitechapel' presents a compelling read as an historical thriller but also serves as a history lesson about the murders and about social deprevation in London during the late Victorian era. Although in reality the mystery of the killer's identity remains, 'Whitechapel' draws a conclusion on who and why committed these ghastly crimes.

New Year's Day: Through the misty streets of Victorian Edinburgh, an elegant female figure walks the cobblestones - with a certain vengeful purpose. Jean Brash, the Mistress of the Just Land, brings her cool intelligence to solving a murder that took place in her own bawdy-hoose (the best in Edinburgh, and her pride and joy). A prominent judge strangled and left dangling could bring her whole life to ruin, and she didn't haul herself off the streets to let that come to pass. The search for the killers will take Jean back into her own dark past as she uncovers a web of political and sexual corruption in the high reaches of the Edinburgh establishment, but she has little time before a certain Inspector James McLevy comes sniffing round like a wolf on the prowl...
