This volume offers diverse perspectives on the recently published "Memorandum" of Martha Moulsworth, a fascinating woman who in 1632 wrote one of the first autobiographical poems in the English language. Moulsworth's poem, which issues a startlingly early and radical call for educational equality, provides one of our best "inside views" of the life of a Renaissance woman, and the poem is also one of the few writings about widowhood written by an early modern widow. Yet the poem is also highly sophisticated as a work of art, and it has already proven its appeal to a wide variety of readers, including both beginning students and noted scholars and critics. The present book builds on the first edition of Moulsworth's poem - "My Name Was Martha": A Renaissance Woman's Autobiographical Poem (Locust Hill, 1993). The new volume offers extensive additional biographical information about Moulsworth herself, and it also presents readings of the poem as a poem and as a piece of autobiography. The book also considers such broader issues as the myth of the muses, the role of education in the Renaissance, the status of wives and widows, and the ideals and realities of early modern marriage. Moulsworth's poem emerges as an even richer work when viewed from so many different perspectives. Moulsworth, however, is hardly the only Renaissance woman writer examined in this volume. Many essayists use Moulsworth as a touchstone for discussing numerous other authors, including such figures as Roger Ascham, Anne Bradstreet, Margaret Cavendish (the Duchess of Newcastle), Lady Anne Clifford, An Collins, Queen Elizabeth I, Elizabeth Grymston, Lady Elizabeth Langham, Aemilia Lanyer, Bathsua Makin, ElizabethMelville, Richard Mulcaster, Katherine Philips, Mary Sidney (the Countess of Pembroke), Rachel Speght, Hester Wiat, and Lady Mary Wroth (to name a few).

In this challenging 1990 study, Donna Landry shows how an understanding of the remarkable but neglected careers of laboring-class women poets in the eighteenth century provokes a reassessment of our ideas concerning the literature of the period. Poets such as the washerwoman Mary Collier, the milkwoman Ann Yearsley, the domestic servants Mary Leapor and Elizabeth Hands, the dairywoman Janet Little, and the slave Phyllis Wheatley can be seen adapting the conventions of polite verse for the purposes of social criticism. Some of their strategies relate to earlier texts, revealing ideological blind spots in the tropes of male poets. Elsewhere, they made interesting innovations in poetic form. Mary Leapor's 'Crumble Hall', for instance, by attending to sexual politics, extends the critique of aristocratic privilege in the country-house poem beyond that of Pope and Crabbe. In Ann Yearsley's verse, landscape description, historical narrative, and philosophical meditation are infused with political comment. Historically important, technically impressive and often aesthetically innovative, the poetic achievements of these plebeian women writers constitute an exciting literary discovery.

Local history is usually conceived in terms of buildings and activities. This book is about local history as communication in literary form. The writers speak to each other across the counties. They are linked in a Nonconformist family network and their media are vivid letters, diaries and poetry. Their commonplace books and school books tell us what they read and how they were educated. The two family collections containing this material have never been studied before from this literary viewpoint. The first part looks at how eighteenth-century young women with literary aspirations escaped from the typical girls' school to gain their real education from male friends, advocates of the 'blue stockings'. The middle part focuses on a literary circle (mostly women) who combined spiritual piety with contemporary classical/pastoral romance, writing hymns but also exchanging playful verse with friends who were Baptist divines. The last part, covering the nineteenth century, follows this literary tradition through four generations in one village.
